I stated this before in another thread. Collins fouled Smith because he had just done a reverse slam with the nuggets up 18 was about to do another. In Collins' mind, Smith was just embarassing the team and he was not going to allow it to happen again. It had little to do with running up the score, it was HOW they were scoring and Smith showboating.

Why don't game conditions constitute "practice" ?

Sorry to butt in. I'm sure if David Lee sprained his ankle badly because IT was trying to rub it in on somebody up 20 with 2 minutes left, I don't think anyone would defend him. It's wrong to leave your starters in late in blowouts because it is an unneeded risk, this is a basketball mainstay.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

I got one question about the whole Denver Nuggets brawl sitiuation. Say instead of a brawl breaking out. Say Carmel Anthony went up for a rebound landed on one of our players feet and really hurt his ankle having him miss 30games. Would it have been worth it to Karl?

That can happen in practice too. Is practice worth it?

You basically have to take that risk in practice for many reasons. You don't have to take that uneeded risk when your up about 18-20pts with 2mins left to go. First of, we would have to score about 20-22pts & the Nuggets would have to score 0pts. At what point in the game did that ever seem possible that we would stop the Nuggets from scoring.

Running up the score or not. He put his players in a positon that he shouldn't have put them in. Taking uneeded serious risk with minimal reward when he didn't have to.

Why don't game conditions constitute "practice" ?

I'm sure there are bench players on the Nuggets that need a lot more practice than the ones that were playing.

DJ, why are you wasting your breath? People around here don't know what running up the score is, no matter how self explanatory it might be.

Jacking up 3 pointers and consistently shooting within the first 5 seconds of the shotclock with a 20 point lead isn't running up the score.

But having your starters stand around the perimeter, dribbling out the shotclock somehow is.
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

they were jacking up shots up 20 and early in the shot clock. that's called running up the score.

No, that's called playing Phoenix Suns basketball. That is the way they play every quarter. The difference is that the bench was in the game, even Pat Burke. If they were trying to set reverse jams and such, that would be running up the score.

Denver Nuggets basketball is second in the NBA in scoring behind only the Suns.

But that's not even the point now is it, seeing how they weren't even shooting quickly the way they normally do. Obviously the Nuggets reigned in their offense by dribbling out the clock but they still get accused of running up the score. Amazing.

To run up the score, one has to attempt to score. Right?

111.3 points a game on 83.8 shots a game...it's just suns basketball
108.0 points a game on 85.9 shots a game...what a bunch of a-holes

Than you throw in the fact the Nuggs were struggling going into this game. The Celtics had just handled them the previous night. If the roles were reversed I highly doubt anyone on here would be saying "damn Isiah take the starters out were running up the score".

what happens when our team starts to give up?

Maybe the "carolina" mafia is spreading to other coaches?
