what's the name of the dude who does most of the games televised on TBS? older dude w/frizzy hair, kinda ugly, clear voice... i'm not talking about Kevin Harlan, i know that guy (his voice is annoying... always sounds like he's got a mouth full of cottonballs)... he does alot of the Laker games i think, not sure (damn, his name escapes me)

dick stockton?

YES!!! thank you!

anyway, i think he does a good job of calling games... wouldn't mind bringing him in to replace Breen.

Stockton has been calling games for quite some time now...He was the national voice for CBS when they had basketball...I remember him well during those great Laker-Celtic series..

somebody don't agree with most people on the board:

During a Brawl, Words of Disgust and Indifference
Andrew Gombert for The New York Times

Knicks’ play-by-play announcer Mike Breen took to taks the players involved in Saturday night's miniriot.

He suggested that Knicks Coach Isiah Thomas had “more than bad basketball to talk to his team about.”

“Talk about composure,” Breen said. “And poise.”

Walt Frazier, Breen’s partner, had as much time and as many openings to register outrage, but he offered none. To listen to Frazier’s words and tone, you’d think that nothing especially unusual had occurred; he even chuckled about the fines and suspensions that were certain to be imposed.

Breen did precisely what he had to do. He repeatedly scorned the Knicks’ Mardy Collins for the flagrant foul he committed on J. R. Smith, the play that started the melee. He voiced concern at how close the brawling had come to fans on a night when many youngsters were at Madison Square Garden. He fulminated about the combatants’ “horrible decision-making,” but he showed enough sense to say that maybe not all were guilty.

His words showed his dismay:

“This is turning into some kind of disaster.”

“Absolutely no excuse for Collins on a hard foul like that” and “a completely unnecessary and disgraceful foul.”

“Disgraceful for Carmelo Anthony to throw a punch like that and then go backing up.”

“Just a disgraceful showing by several individual players.”

“Just makes you sick to your stomach.”

“Another dismal evening at Madison Square Garden, and this one turned ugly not only from a basketball standpoint.”

“This night, another disaster at the Garden.”

In describing the action and providing opinion, Breen acted much as he did two years ago, when he was courtside for ESPN during the brawl between the Pacers and the Pistons at the Palace at Auburn Hills, Mich. The journalistic problem for ESPN that night was that its pregame and halftime crew, led by John Saunders, blamed the fans for the melee, not the players.

While Breen demonstrated his professionalism, Frazier, who survives at MSG because he is a Knicks hero, not a competent analyst, offered almost nothing. He was such a superfluous presence that he might have stayed home to study his thesaurus. He described Anthony’s punch as so loud you could (a) “hear it down here, folks” or (b) “throughout the arena.” He described how the roundhouse punch “cold-cocked” Collins.

Through several replays, Frazier offered no opinion stronger than that “the only beneficiary of this folly will be the charities that the money will go to,” referring to the fines to be levied by the National Basketball Association. He then laughed after saying that the ejection of all 10 players on the court would “send a signal for how severe the penalties will be for this.”

The only time he spoke out against a player was when he said that Collins had committed a flagrant foul the night before against Indiana (he failed to say that the Pacer involved was Maceo Baston). “Nothing we can do to defend Mardy Collins,” he said, with no passion in his voice. Maybe he was cogitating over how Mardy Collins rhymes with Lionel Hollins.

Frazier eventually blamed “all this bravado” for the fight and chuckled again when he said that punishment “in the pocket” would “teach them a lesson.” In the postgame program, Frazier leaned on his trademark childish rhyming, saying the Malice at the Palace, as the brawl in Auburn Hills, became known, was a lesson not learned by young players. Finally, but too late, he called the Garden incident a “disgrace.”

Is Breen the best, no, but he's still very good and constructive. I love Gus Johnson too, but he's very much a homer unless it's just an unbearably ugly game. He used to be much less rosey and more realistic about the Knicks.

I think I know why some of you say he's good on ESPN, but not with the Knicks. Because he's right most of the time, and if he's right most of the time, and gonna broadcast the Knicks, then it's gonna come out negative a lot and that's naturally gonna piss off some of you Knick apologists.

My advise is to stop being a Knick apologist, because these are quite ugly days to be Knicks fans and Breen calls it like he sees it. Again, not the best, but still solid.

I'm pretty apathetic to Breen. He's pretty negative but he's honest for the most part. Though I get the feeling he wants out of broadcasting NYK games to focus on his ESPN job.

I dislike Gus. He's a cheerleader 90% of the time and a play-by-play guy 10% of the time.

Clyde has a tendency to ramble about nothing at times, but he's great at color bring the nuances of how to play winning basketball. Two rings, folks.

I really like when Kenny Smith is there. He brings a new cerebral angle to the commentary (good midrange shooting = repetition; defense is all about trust).

That all said - I miss Marv. GREATLY. Tonight would've been perfect with a Marv "YES!"

Yeah I'm a fan of Kenny Smith as raw as he is. Sorry I don't care for Gus he's good for college basketball and that's it. I don't like the Tommy Heinsohn homerisitic type commentating all throughout the game, it's awful

I like Gus, but if you listen to him on the radio, he's much more impressive and more critical. Yet his enthusiasm is still up there. He's very good at what he does, but sometimes, his homerism on Knicks tv is irritating b/c there's nothing to be homerisitc about, when it comes to the Knicks.

If I slit my wrists, stuck my head in an ice bucket and held my breath, I'd be in better shape than listening to more than 3 hrs of Breen.

Sh-t in the popcorn to go with sh-t on the court. Its a theme show like Medieval times.

Breen is a sanctimonious prick. I hope Clyde clocks him some night when he's banging on the kids.

Yeah, and lets fire the MSG crew for showing all the games we loose. They should know better. If nobody ever says we suck, than we can just pretend this team is good. Oh waite, some people already do that, and they are bothered when somebody reminds them of reality. So sure, lets fire another good announcer and have the Nets get him, along with some more of NY fans when they move to Brooklyn.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

Breen could be the biggest Isiah asslover and he'd still be among the most annoying human beings alive. For 3 hours, he reads me the ten commandments. Why? Is it because he was a ref? Is it because Larry's di*k is tucked up his butt? I can't tell for sure but I do know the ten commandments, so I'd like him kindly to shut up.

Exactly. It's his personality.

It would rock if we could trade Breen for Marv.

Breen is a true pro and calls it as he sees it. And in fact replays show there were indeed .3 secs left on the clock. He always makes it a point to talk about the clock in those situations. Just because he's not screaming and nuttin on himself like that bush league home Gus Johnson would be DOESNT mean he hates the Knicks. He's actually in a position where he doesnt have to kow tow to Dolan and ruin his cred as a broadcaster, so you get an objective well called game with excitement in his voice at the right time. Listen to his call of the final shot again.

I feel sorry for you young cats coming up in this age of homerism in broadcasting. You probably hear how they call games in Indiana or something with the play-by-play guy referring to the team as "we" or "us" and you hope for the same for the NY. I pray that day NEVER comes and guys like Breen and Albert stick around for a long time.

You guys woulda lost your minds back in the day when we had Susan Waldman & Michael Kay actually criticize a championship contender.
