I agree that Curry's defense is a problem. What it probably means is we need another good shot blocker/defender down low. Balkman will help as he probably gets more experience, but he's really more of a SF. Is a future lineup of Lee/Frye, Balkman/Jeffries/(Q?), Curry going to be good enough defensively down the road? That's the question we are going to have to ask, and as much as I like all of them it does seem problematic.
Lee has trouble, thus far, guarding guys who set up outside of the paint, and isn't a shot blocker, but I think he will become a good defender, just struggle against quicker and stronger PFs. If he starts with Curry we still have no good shotblocker at the 4 or 5.
Frye is also not a very good shot blocker for someone his size, although slightly better than Lee, and struggles on D thus far. He seems to have a good work ethic so that's good, but if he plays with Curry we still lack strong shot blocking at the 4-5 spots.
Balkman will probably become a very good defender, because while he makes some mistakes, he really hustles, does not seem afraid of anyone, and is a pretty darn good weak side shot blocker already. He has the athletic ability to guard top SFs but he has to learn more. You saw in the hard foul on James that he underestimated Lebron's quickness, gave him too much room on one side, and got taken. Balkman came back with the hard foul, but he probably needs to know players he's guarding strengths, and match that with his own abilities a bit better. I see that coming with experirence.
Jeffries is a good defender, but another player who doesn't block well for someone his size.
Q has been our best defender for the past two years, and plays with A LOT of heart, which I love, but he's definitely not helping with shot blocking at all.
That's the current roster and future for the next few years, baring any roster changes. I think you cannot help but wonder if we will be a team that has problems with shot blocking, especially since our guards are so bad at D. That's why I might like to see Q move to the 2 guard spot (although you wonder if he is quick enough) if Jeffries is ready to play, and plays well on D. Problem then what do you do with the threesome of Marbury/Francis/Jamal? Then what about Nate? The big guys have to intimidate a bit more, which is why I liked Balkman's ferocity against Lebron. These are going to be tough questions for this team down the road, no doubt.
