Marbury played well in the 1st game... let's see him sustain that type of play over the course of the entire season... talking like a leader only gets you so far... u have to BE a leader on the floor... Steph showed some glimpses the other night, but i want to see that over a much longer stretch before i start to even think he's seen the light.

Said Marbury, "We want to play smarter up at that point, manage the clock. We've got to learn to do that."

who's the point guard again? marbury, francis, and jamal were in the game in the 4th. our guards are not "kids". they're the ones that control the clock.

Everybody does not hate Marbury the person, but many hate Marbury the player.

Personally, I'm willing to see what happens this year with his pal Isiah as coach. Going by what happened in the first game, I saw a team on which Marbury is not indispensible, and I think that's a good thing. Let him go out and contribute. So long as he realizes he doesn't have to try to do everything himself, maybe we can hate Marbury the player a bit less this year.

I think with Papa Thomas as his coach this is the best/last shot to salvage any kind of respect. He along with LB and the rest of the Knicks embarrassed us nationally last year with their antics. He lost fans that liked him before the season. By doing as TMS says, sustaining an effort and doing the right things on the court(even if we aren't a playoff team) he will earn the respect back. Charlie Ward was 1/80th the talent that Steph was. Charlie's religion turned some fans away. But the reality is Charlie still got more respect than Steph around these parts when it came to basketball. Why? Because the guy just played. He didn't ask for systems to be desinged for him. He didn't blame teammates. He didn't lash out at coaches. He just shut up and did what was asked. I remember one quote from JVG when I attended his coaching clinic in 2001. I asked him about how he decides his rotations. this is a direct quote from my notes:

"It's all about trust. Some guys you can trust, some guys unfortunately you can't. You have to go with the guys you can trust even if they are less talented. I knew last season that if I asked my team to box out, when I looked on the court I would have at least one guy who would be killing himself boxing out. Charlie WArd. I knew if I screamed out a play, I would have at least one guy running that play to it's conclusion. Charlie Ward. That's the guy you want on the court. Players do not deserve more than what they give."

bippity, i just wanted to say that reading your whole statement about your league and being nice to the refs was the biggest waste of time i could imagine. i don't understand why you think you're so all-knowing when it comes to basketball, and how you think it's even somewhat relevant to compare your league to the nba. anybody who has ever played basketball anywhere in any setting already knows everything you just said. instead of always looking to criticise and show your expertise, why don't you just give people some credit every once in a while.

What in heavens name are you talking about? How do you get me thinking I know more than others when I simply gave an example from my life of a situation where an answer is obvious and yet some people don't see it. It has nothign to do with comparing a YMCA league to the NBA. Where do you guys get this crarp. I'm sure I miss answers all the time as well In this case the answer for Marbs is simple he just doesn't see it. If you want to take this as some type of personal front against you, or somehow me saying I have some kind of superior mind, than so be it.

"why don't you just give people credit every once in a while". Once again a misrepresentation. If you scroll up about 2 posts you will see that I actually gave Charlie Ward a load of credit. I give credit where I see fit. As you probably do as well. but since I'm not giving the guy that you want me to give credit to somehow this makes me an evil human. I say poppydoodle.

you played off that whole statement as if saying that you were so great with the refs and everybody else on the court couldn't figure out why "you get all the calls." everybody who's ever played basketball knows that if you treat the refs with respect you're more inclined to get calls. and i don't know why you would think that i took your comment as a "personal front" against me, that doesn't make any sense. when i was talking about giving people credit, i wasn't talking about charlie ward. no offense to charlie himself.

Marbury deserves much of the criticism he gets. It's time for him to just shut up and play.

You made the statement "why don't you just give people some credit every once in a while." I guess I was wondering where the hell that comes from.

As for the post about my league you are missing the point. You are taking it as me saying how great I am with the refs and that I get calls because I figured out some secret that nobody knows. That has nothing to do with it. My point is that I am doing somehting that "everyone knows". Everyone on the planet knows that this is how you get respect. But these four guys and their girlfriends/friends can't figure out why I get the calls. They come up with every theory in the book except the obvious. Now relate that to our original point about marbs. He wants everyone to respect and love him. He doesn't realize that the answer for his lack of respect and love is obvious. Everyone knows what it is. Even Marbs knows what it is. Yet theories are being thrown everywhere. It's a simple solution for Marbs. Shut your piehole and play hard on both ends of the court. Stop bickering about LB. Stop blaming teammates. Do what it takes to win. Do this and fans will come to your side. Until then, don't be surprised that many want you gone. It's a simple answer, some just fail to see.

Now if you continue to take offense to my example than that is your choice. I don't care. All opinions on this board are based on personal experience. You should not be offended when someone shares that with you. Take it as a compliment that someone is comfortable enough to share part of their life with you even though they don't know you. Now let's both stop our crying and give three cheers for our Knicks.

Its time for us as fans to get off his back. I mean really every other post is about how we hate marbury and how this team will never improve. He is a cancer, this and that. Oh boy! If the team all of a sudden has a breakout season and makes the playoffs and even win a game or two. Everyone will be singing a different tune. It's all too easy to jump on someone when there down instead of encouraging them to do better.

One post mentioned that marbury and Curry were on a break and Marbs didnt pass him the ball. "Cancer"
This is a blind statement. You have Marbury who is arguably one of the best penetrators in the open court. 10-10 times in this situation Marbury will take the shot Why ? because most times he will make and he will always draw the foul. To pass to Curry or any other person on the break will require more finess to dupe the defender. The defender might steal the ball or draw the foul.
I've see Marbs on breaks where there is no defender back and he gives the ball up.

You guys are too busy disecting every aspect of his game instead of watching what he actually brings to the court.
someone also mentioned that they would take luke ridenour over Marbs. What ?
This guy is no where near Marbs skill set.
I bleed Knicks and it urks me to see other fans totally butcher this team. This team is leaps and bounds over shandon anderson, eisley, weatherspoon, , doleac, and some of the other names that i cant even remember.

This team has potential and have something to prove. Lets give them a fair shot at achieving something positive before we start making judgements.
I say 20-30 gms in will tell us what kind of team we have.

Michael, just to clarify, i was a big supporter of the trade that got Marbury here in the first place & had BIG hopes that he'd be the guy we needed to take us back to respectability in this league... boy was i wrong... steadily as i've watched him play & how he conducted himself over the past 3 seasons, i've grown a deep rooted disdain for the guy... this is not a game to game, i think he's great, i think he sucks wishy washiness on my part... for Marbury to win back my respect, he's going to have to do a HELLUVA lot more than just lead this team back to the playoffs this season... he needs to show me that he's grown into the leader that other young guys should emulate their own games after... i really don't think he'll ever do it, but i really hope i'm wrong on that one too.

Marbury has been there and done that already with the Suns. Winning a few games in the playoffs will do nothing to improve Marbury's tainted image. Carrying his team to the Eastern Conference or the NBA Finals will change peoples opinions, not a few games, not a chance.

I was the one who said they would take Ridnour over Marbury and I would. The guy is a pure PG who can also score, I'd much rather take that over a PG who looks to score first and pass second, Ridnour also plays some semblance of defense, alot more than Marbury plays. Plus he is a leader on the court, like PG's are supposed to be.

I also said I'd take Chris Duhon over Marbury as well, for the same reasons I mentioned for Ridnour.

There lies the problem, everyone has unrealistic goals for the team. When the trade went down, the knicks did not have a winning team. They were barely 8th seed as best. They went out and got jamal, he got injured, h20 never came back. We went out and got Larry, we got three good draft picks. That didnt work. So here we are, you want them to hit the East Finals and NBA Finals. Not realistic.

To address the other players you would rather have. They are young and unproven, they dont have the experience. Marbury does.
I'll throw this out there in a hypothetical world. If salary was not at play, then every team that doesnt have a star point guard would trade for him. Regardless of his persona, attitude with media, etc. The guy has got the skills. They would do it in a heartbeat. (Hypothetical world)

TMS
We need a clear definition of what a leader does. Marbury might not be the best guy to be the team leader. But his teammates respect him, the coaches respect him. If you play his kind of game, and are young then you should emulate after him. he does it pretty good. Let me throw this at you. Marbury or insert any other guard with similar attributes coming into the league at that time. There was john stockton, a class act as a pg and a role model. ( no one would argue that, im going somewhere i promise) Does it make sense for a guy with Marbury,Iverson, Francis, etc talent to model their game after Stockton's. No there are not those kind of players. Nash, Ridnour, etc should emulate Stockton.
I agree his attitude most times when they are losing is totally crap, which is why he might not be the guy to be the leader. just reality.
Also this is the best team Isaih has put together since he got here.

you pretty much answered your own question there... Marbury's not cut out to be a leader but he was brought here to be one... Isiah put all his eggs into Marbury's basket, & it turned out to be the wrong choice... again, i'll have to see a MUCH bigger sample than just a few games where Marbury plays good fundamental team style ball to have my opinion swayed on him... he's shown me too much over the span of the past 3 seasons to think otherwise.

as for emulating John Stockton, no i don't expect young dynamic PG's who can score to emulate a guy like that... i expect them to emulate a guy like Isiah Thomas... Marbury says Isiah was his idol, but there's really no comparison between the 2 when it comes to being a leader for your team... Isiah had an indomitable will, he was MONEY when it counted, & he was 1 of the toughest SOB's that ever played in this league.

Marbury? he's fugazy man... sorry if that sounds harsh, but it's reality... until he shows me he's got heart & toughness inside that hard thug wannabe shell of his, he'll always be a big phony in my eyes.

Just a note on Steph's defense. It wasn't HORRIBLE. If you go back and watch the game again, you'll see that he had many good defensive possessions. A LOT of Atkins scores came off of picks and rubs where he gained an edge due to getting help. There were a couple of times he just head faked and went by Steph, but NO PG in this league can shut down another quick guard all game. We tend to focus on the times that guards score against us and lay that all on Steph, when in fact our help defense is almost non existant. We don't have anyone sliding over to take a charge of block a shot. Curry finally got active in this game, but overall there are tons of possessions where our guards don't get help when they get picked off.

Atkins took 18 shots to get his 25 pts and he had 14 FT's. He was particularly aggressive, cuz it was the smart thing to do. Atkins is a savvy vet. They really didn't have much else that was working against us. I can guarantee you that all of his scores weren't on straight blow by's. Another overlooked part of the game was that Stoudemire was 2-7 before he left the game. Steph had 19 and 8 asts and he didn't dominate the ball to get those stats. that is a good game for him. He only took 13 shots and went 6-13 and 6-8 on FT's. Meanwhile Jamal went 4-22 and there isn't anywhere near as much Hate for him after a performance like that. CAN YOU SAY ANTI STEPH BIAS?

if u'd read my post game comments thread u'd have noticed i pointed out that i was very pleased w/the way Marbury played the other night w/the 1 exception of that big missed FT in crunchtime... i also pointed out how poorly Jamal had played that game as well... where is the Anti Steph Bias you're speaking of? this thread is speaking to the OVERALL impression of Stephon Marbury... his performance the other night is not going to suddenly change the minds of those who have been conditioned to think a certain way about him over the past 3 years... that's not bias born out of a simple dislike for the guy... it's an overall impression of him based on what he's shown over the longhaul in his career.
