As Crawford and fellow Knick and streetball mate Nate Robinson know, Rucker ball is a different brand of basketball. "This is where you work on your game," Crawford said. "You get better, break out some new stuff."

This statement rubs me the wrong way. Maybe I'm reading too much into this but I think this is what holds alot of atheletes back from reaching their full potential. Understanding what they have to do to improve, and the best way to achieve it. Rucker ball is for fun. I don't see Crawfords defense getting any better by playing there.

Oh, I'm sorry I thought NBA ball was suppose to be fun too. I didn't know that was the case.
wrong... its about winning. The dunk contest and all star games are fun. NBA basketball is about the best BB players in the world competing at the highest possible level. Maybe the NBA has changed and passed me by.

If Rucker was good enough for guys like Clyde, WIlt, Dr J etc then its good enough for Jamal and Nate. If you watch these games they are VERY competitive and there's actually more team play than you might realize. Only at certain times they go overboard to entertain the crowd, but these players DO want to WIN and you can't do that unless you actually play good ball.

those guys can do anything they want (NAte and Jamal), because they show up in shape. I kinda wish Jerome and Eddie would play at Ruckers. You say Ruckers they hear Fudruckers

Didn't know you played in the NBA. I assume that one should enjoy their workplace. I feel deeply sorry for you if this isn't the case for you. Seriously. I watched ESPN classic, watched NBA games since the 70s and I don't remember to many players that the NBA wasn't fun for them. There was a reason why people started to go to ABA games instead of NBA games Fish. There was a reason why a Dr. J decided to go to the ABA instead of the NBA even after Red Auerbach begging him to come to the NBA. That why a guy like Pistol Pete said no thanks to the NBA. Rick Barry, Dan Issel, David Thompson and George "Iceman" Gervin are some others to just name a few. Remember it was the NBA who initiated the merger with the ABA, it was the NBA who put in the 3 point line to liven up their game, removed the slam dunk ban (O'Brien was idiot). Its funny that we are talking about this in face of the NBA trying all sorts of wonderful glimicks to try and bring the fun back to the NBA.

You're supposed to be having fun while competing to win. If you're not, you shouldn't be in the league in the first place.

Dude you ever play organized ball? Scratch that, have you ever played ball?

I'm not trying to start nothing but I'm saying. I was in a church tournament that was too into busy trying to disipline the players instead of running the tourney. We end up getting kicked out the league for arguing and fighting. Crazy and no it wasn't fun. I was in a tourney once where I was the tallest mofo on the team. I had to be down low guarding 6' mofos. Dude I'm 5'10". That sucked ass and yes I spent most of the time arguing with my coach and teamates cuz they basically was blaming me for not getting rebounds and playing defense. That's why my back hurts now! I also was in a tourney where I was the only guard playing with college level guys. I can gang for a little but not the whole game. I'm not John Stockton but my teamates thought I should have been. Oh yeah we was fighting every play. Is it my fault guys don't show up?

Anyway. Its only fun when you fit the system or if you are on a team that you can fall into a position. Like I can guard most guards on the perimeter before I tore my acl. I could also guard bigger guys if I had to with no problem. But if I'm the only dude doing a certain thing I'm in trouble and there is no fun. I could throw street ball into it. How many games have you been in where it seems like you are the only one down low? 4 guys up top calling for the ball is no fun. You the only guy down low? No fun.

Geez when does the season start.

I never played HS ball, but would really like to be a coach, but still played organized ball in cyo leagues and also went to that Knicks gatorade camp one Summer. I loved it even though I was probably the worst player there. Knew nothing about ball at the time. Wasn't the greatest of players but I improved my game playing with my friends who are good. None of us are real talented, but we play freaking hard. We can shoot though so that's at least good. lol

With that being said, I miss playing organized ball very much. I don't have time though b/c of school and work.

But again, I say, if you love the game you should be having fun no matter how competitive it is.

I'm glad you didn't take the post the wrong way cuz I didn't mean it to.

Well the tourneys I have been in weren't bug time things. Local church, or summer youth tourneys. I played in a PAL one once too. In the game where I was the tallest mofo, it was like hell getting guys to play. It was in organized. Guys wEre just trying to win so they didn't care how the other teams looked.

I cursed out my high school basketball coach for wasting my time my senior year. I made the mistake of not trying out until summer before senior year. I went to conditioning in august! Then I went through training camp and went down to the last cut. I actually was the last cut. The guy told me he didn't pick me cuz I didn't play my other three years so he have the spot to one of the returning seniors. Talk about a dream killer. I was a lot better than some of the dudes their. They told me that only to cut me. I felt like they used me for practice purposes to get their players ready. I also tried to yet out for city college one year but I signed up for classes that conflicted so I had to drop one and pick one up. They took me out of practice after I made the team and then was making me do a lot of bs just to get reinstated. Meanwhile the season had started already. I never played a game.

No fun!

your mistakening love for the game as fun. We have a lot of guys on our team that think of the NBA like its recreation or something. Its not. Great players show their love of the game when they are playing. But they also respect the game and respect themselves as players. That means hard work, LOTS of hard work. You see this in all sports. Ray Lewis and Straha come to mind in football. It looks like they are having fun on Sundays, and I'm sure part of them are having fun. But they are totally dedicated to their sport and being great players. You wont see them showing up fat and playing themselves into shape.

I want guys on my team that love basketball, and more importantly are dedicated to it. Our guys in the 90s were, Ewing, Starks, Oakley.. no doubt. Then Houston, LJ, Spree were also dedicated.

Do you think Eddie Curry LOVES basketball? That he's dedicated to the game?

I used to take 500-1000 shots a day. They would shut down the lights at the arena and there would be three of us on different nets lighting it up. People used to say I was so dedicated to the game. I wasn't I just loved playing. Shooting was more fun than sitting in front of the tv playing video games or screwing around. Now I've crossed over to the darkside of 30. I have a son, a business, I coach and little time to play. I still find time to take 300-500 shots a day. why? BECAUSE I LOVE THE GAME. I love every aspect of it. If I go and play on a playground I can have a ball tearing up some 18 year old going one on one and forgetting about what is important. But when I'm in an organized league I have an equal if not more fun playing the team game with my teammates. I love the game.

Some people don't. Some pretend. Some are good at it because of physical abilities but just don't like the game. I've played with a ton of these guys. Saw some guys that should be household names but never became, because they simply didn't love the game enough to try to learn every aspect of it. Instead they just wanted to go one on one because that's what they thought the game was. They showed up out of shape because they didn't want to hit the courts. It's that way in every area of life. Some people will and some won't.

I think many of our guys that have fun playing. I think we have a majority that spend a lot of time working on their games. But I don't think we have guys that truly love and respect the game so much that they will learn every aspect of it. Can they develop this love???? Of course. Most probably will. Unfortunately some get it later in life than others.
I just hope that people will like me
