Getting an expiring contract for the Defensive Player of the Year who also can give you 22 PPG is nothing to brag about no matter how much baggage the guy had. It's hindsight, but imagine how much they could have gotten for him if they had traded him at a smarter time.
Absolutely agree. But Artest killed his value. I wouldn't have given up Frye for him(if that is indeed what they wanted). 29 other NBA teams in the NBA had leverage over the Pacers in that situation because Artest was just not going to play for them again. I feel on his game Artest is the best all around player in the game. Said it for a while now. He messed up by trading him too late. They could have gotten more for him when he was suspended 2 years ago. Under the circumstances, I think that was the best he could really do. He didn't take on any long term money, no players with issues, and he didn't tie himself to anyone long term either. He got himself some nice young swingmen which he probably would have had a hard time doing if Artest was here, and if he got them they probably would be sitting behind a long term contract player if he didn't make this deal.
I agree Artest as a skill player was worth more. But there were mitigating circumtances on this one. Looking back, I think Walsh did the bet he could do.
I also forgot to add that in the draft he got Shawne Williams, obtained Marquis Daniels and Orien Green. Walsh covered himself pretty good from that trade.

If they wanted cap space, we could have sent Penny their way and cleared $16mm for them- not $6mm. $6mm? That is what Jeffries is getting paid- Artest, head case and all, is solid value money wise.
They should have at least gotten a draft pick for him.
