hey, if he's happy in Europe, that's his call. Being drafted by an NBA team doesn't mean that you owe the NBA anything.
I disagree. Entering the NBA Draft is a conscious decision. If you want to stay in Europe than stay. I agree with that part. However by entering the draft you are stating your intentions to play in the NBA in the upcoming season. The draft is too important to some teams(or multi-million dollar businesses) for European players to use it as a bargaining tool. If this is the way some Euros are going to use the draft they should all be declared outright FA's.
Eny, you have said absolutely everything I was gonna say on this subject. why? why isnt this guy free to do what he chooses? He was probably looking for a top 4-5 selection and when he didnt get it had a solid fall back plan. Teams use every leverage they have when it comes to paying guys and finding players, why cant players do the same? Vasquez did everything with in the rules. Magic have nobody to blame but themselves.
It is not just Vazquez that I am targeting here. I am also not blaming him for using the rules to his advantage. I am blaming the NBA for letting this happen year after year, and actually having these stupid rules. I feel the same for Euro-players that are drafted and never signed by their team. PLayers should be signed to an NBA contract and then the team would be allowed to assign them to other teams if need be-and any amount of time served on CBA or Euro teams counts as time towards free agency after the contract. why should this be the case? The NBA has no authority over the european basketball teams. they are not our farm league and if anything, the euros dont like the nba taking all the talent..
Understood. And doing something like I suggested, benefits both leagues. The teams in the NBA can use high picks on guys that will actually play for them, while foreign guys who are drafted into the NBA wouldn't be able to leverage their Euro team with the fact they can go to the NBA and get better contracts.
Look at who Orlando COULD have drafted if they knew Frangina wouldn't play for them....
May, McCants, Green, Graham, Granger, Warrick..Those are productive guys taken within the 10 picks after Fran "Weis" Vazquez.
[Edited by - joec32033 on 07-27-2006 11:31 PM] It is each NBA team's responsibility to assess who will play for them, and it's up to a player to decide whether or not they want to play in the NBA if drafted. Most do want to play in the NBA, but if they choose to go to another league, that's their call.
If you declare for the draft, by definition it is a supposed to be a signal of commitment to play in the NBA. Problem is with the set of rules that re in place now it allows the NBA draf tto be used as a bargaining tool for European players who never want to spend a minute in the NBA (Milos, Weis, Fran-do you think if Fran wanted to play in the NBA he would have negotiated an $11 million buyout in this contract-of which he would be responsible for $7.5 mil out of his own pocket?)
I agree with Eny-professional players should either not be eligible for the draft OR when they are drafted the only team they can play for is the NBA team that drafts them-Which BTW, happens to be the whole point of the draft. Imagine if the NBA rules of the draft mirrorred the way it works for Europeans...Cleveland Drafts Lebron, he signs with the Knicks. Orlando drafts Dwight, he signs with LA. Denver drafts Carmelo, he signs with Chicago. Knickerbocker, please. Europe is a different league. Stop being a baby. If Lebron wanted to play in the CBA, the NBA could NOT stop him. Different league.
If he is under contract in the NBA he would need to have the permission of his team. I know it's the NFL, but look at Ricky Williams. Under contract with the Dolphins, but needed their permission to go to the CFL. A contract is a contract, the actual execution and standing of the contracts can't be too different from sport to sport. Sure if LeBron wanted to play in the CBA noone can stop him. That still doesn't make it right if he showed every intention of playing in then NBA then used it as leverage when he was picked to get a better contract in the other league.
