Summer League, just one week after the draft, is nothing but glorified pick up games

Mardy with a training camp and some preseason instruction will be the leader the Knicks can employ to organize the court and direct the tempo.

I'm widit

See the thing is, your saying Collins won't be able to do that but neither will any of our other "PGs".

Collins was a huge disappointment for me in SL action. I expected alot more from him. He look very timid playing with 2nd year players. I think he is capable of being a starting pg in the NBA for a very long time but his SL performance was bad. He made mistakes that were very uncommon for him. I don't expect much from him this season.

I was disappointed with Collins as well. I'm holding out on the fact that I saw him in college enough to know what kind of player he can be on a nightly basis. Your right, we probably shouldn't expect that much from him this season but as Zeke has said, he will not compromise the future of this team to save his job so I would like to see Collins start at PG becuase he is going to be a very solid PG in this league and for the Knicks. Will that happen, I doubt it.

Maybe in a Monte Williams role where he starts because of his fit in the lineup and the mismatch that it creates coming off the bench. However, I think Crawford should start and then Isiah should choose between Collins, Francis and Marbury.

No way in hell does he start. It's not even clear if Nate will get a lot of PT, along with Rose and Richardson and Lee and now you're saying Marty should start, without even having to earn those minutes? Talk about nuts.

it simply isn't gonna happen!! Mardy looked lost in summer league, what makes you think he'd be ready to start??? I like him but he's a project right now.

I co sign this post. Collins will probably be something in the future once he loses the butterflies. Right now the dude is just a promising rookie.

Isiah said the guys will be competing for their roles so if mardy deserves to start he will.

I like the dude a lot buy you gotta be realistic.

Nah, throw him under the bus because he didn't show his azz one week after he was drafted.

sheesh

Collins played for the demanding and passionately maniacal John Chaney.

Collins has intelligence, poise and maturity.

Collins plays defense.

Collins is 21 years old. 21.

And some want to measure him by how he performs in a pick up game.

fish.mike - you must've missed the meeting

Collins is a 6'6 Chollie Ward without the Bible-thumping. Thats not a bad thing.

Besides mike, what do you have against intelligence, poise and maturity?

Aren't those traits ALL positives when it comes to learning?

Sometimes, the double standard of "wants" and "what you gets" is astounding.

Collins moves like cement by NBA standards

I guess when everyone else moves faster than you there's always poise and maturity right?

Also, Collins is a rookie PG. Who's minutes is he taking?
Crawford
Nate
Marbury
Francis

All those guys are better than he is.

fish.mike - the rabbit doesn't ALWAYS win the race. Colliins doesnt NEED to take anyones minutes. All he needs to do is provide an occsaional defensive compliment/changeup/cameo for the shrimps among the ones you listed.

Nate is 5'8, Marbury is 6'1 and Stevie Wonder is 6'2.

Crawford could use the defensive help.

Sheesh, you want better defense or what?

I agree. The title of the thread is START mardy from day 1, not play him.

I love all the accolades bestowed on him, but none point to him starting from Day 1.

This thread is really funny to follow!!! Usually after guys have good to great performances in summer league (Lampe) people tend to overvalue it and want to make them starters imidiatly!!! This is partly due to the good performance seen and partly because we as knicks fans usually at this point of the year are still disappointed with the mess our team went through the last season!!! So finding a savior in SL seems as good a way to deal with it as it comes!

Now after Mardy had a very timid SL outing people say "dont overvalue it, it was a week after the draft etc."! This is just funny!!!

I dont think that Mardys talent or skill level will have anything to do with his chances to play right now! We have too many highly touted and well payed guards and even their lack of defensive motivation or ability will not earn him a starters role!!! He will have to earn his minutes!!!
I really hope he will get the chances to show his talent on NBA level this year but i highly doubt he will be a starter as a Knick for a long time! (Bare any trades with Francis, Marbs)

Obviously it has not! Based on his SLplay nobody would call for him to be our starting PG!!! Still i find it amusing that normaly people open such a thread after a Rookie had a strong SL performance!!!

Absolutely not signed. Anyone who signs this is rooting for Isiah to lose his job. I want Isiah to succeed. You don't put a rookie PG into that kind of situation, when you have Marbury and Francis.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

And may I ask why? Othre than, hey we "heard" he plays good D and is a thinker on the court. I used to play great D and "thought" on the court, too. Made up for my lack of height and after I broke my ankle, lack of any kind of athletic ability. However, I arent good for anything more than a low quality pickup game.

I haven't "heard" he plays good D, I've seen him play good D for years at Temple University under one of the most demanding coaches in college basketball. When you are running a offense you want your PG to be able to do exactly what Collins does. Think, pass, setup offense, play defense. You don't need them to do anything else.

Hit free throws? But that could be said against nearly all the knicks. Seriously though, don't rush the kid. Let him earn his minutes. The knicks will be fine.

I'm fine with earning minutes! I just want Collins to start because of my disdain for Marbury/Francis and their lack of being a real PG.

the one thing I thought was weird about the Summer League play is that Collins would start right next to Nate and then play minutes with him later in the game too. The Knicks were trying to get Nate minutes with the ball in this hands running the show, so Collins was effectively the shooting guard, which made about zero sense. Both of those guys would go off the court and Udoka and Russell would play SG/PG. I guess they are bringing Collins in real slow.

You realize how screwed up the rotation would be and how angry some of these primadona players would turn out, if Collins was just handed the starting duties from day 1?

It doesn't work like this my friend. We don't even know if he's an NBA player, let alone a starter. I am rooting for him, but I have the same stance as I had with the rookies last year. Make em earn it. (Please, Brown haters, do not enter.)
