Thomas is finding it hard to justify signing Butler for $7 million when he could be the team's third-string center behind Eddy Curry and Jerome James.

i find that sentence highly amusing.

I need some clarification The paper said the Knicks would have to pay Butler 14 million plus luxury taxes. Why would his contract double?

I'm still not seeing his value IF jj comes into camp and gives us the number 3 center we need (10 minutes a game).

I now we overpaid, but we have him and he's ours.

I liked jackie b, but Lee's proving to be a good option as part of the big rotation and frye and curry are definitely the future, so that leave JJ and Jackie B and if jackie wants $7 mill over 3 years than, while it's a mistake to let him go, it's not that big of a mistake.

nobody is saying jackie sucked, but he's still 3rd string and 3rd string centers do actually grow on trees.

We found him on one.

I think woods is adiosville as well. balkman has made him expendable.

Jrose and Qrich are the starters and Balkman is the 3rd option.

I'm listening to what Isiah is saying and not imparting any of my opinion.

He's said point blank he's going with a 10 man rotation. Crawford, Nate, Franchise and Marbury are the back court and marbs and franchise are starting.
he's mentioned jrose and qrich as starters at the 3 along with balkman and has left everyone else for front court duty, which means lee will not be competing for playing time at the three and will be a frontcourt player joining a rotation of curry, frye and JJ.

that was before he signed a $7 deal and someone seems to know something about JJ being in shape because his name is used more than MoT and Malik Rose combined.

I've mentioned this before and I'll reiterate, JJ was a servicable big man when he was in shape, he came into New York EXTREMELY out of shape.

He comes into new york even average he's a good back up center and will provide the shot blocking that we need.

Also, Lee has emerged as a replacement for his other skills.

I love jackie, but if JJ is coming in as expected, let him go somewhere and succeed.

But stop jumping all over the jackie butler bandwagon all of a sudden fish.

The original post were comments made prior to the Spurs offering part-ownership to Jackie Butler.

If the Knicks somehow matched the offer, it would end up costing them something like double the $7 million because of the luxury tax. Then you have to consider Butler playing time will not increase, so you end up paying $14 mil for 3 points and 2 rebounds a game.

Do the math.

Letting Butler walk wont be such a bad idea in my eyes. Butler or no Butler, I would keep JJ as a third string and give Frye those back up center minutes. That would create more playing time for Lee at PF and I think Frye can excell in the high-post UCLA offense.

Of course the pile-on-vultures at ESPN and abroad will blow any half way deceant game Butler has while playing next to Duncan (which can't hurt) out of proportion. A Butler 9 pt 7 rb explosion will looke much better for a winning team than it did last year, so they will definitely try and clown the knicks. But winning shuts-up the whinning.

how about re-signing Butler & have JJ be the 3rd string C & play Frye at the position he belongs at, which is the PF?

Ask Briggs, because he was the only describing him as such.

I;m not saying Frye shouldn't start at PF, but he can get extra floor time when Curry exits, and he slides over to the center spot and Lee comes in at Pf. Lee can also get time at SF. This scenario creates more time for Lee and Frye because they both can play 2 positions.

I agree that JJ should be the third string center but I doubt Isiah is gonna let 30 million dollars waste on the bench without trying to get some type of production out of him. Rightly or wrongly thats how I see it.

Also, I have no problem having Lee play center as well.

considering the fact that Isiah has 1 year to turn this team around, i don't think the salary JJ's making is going to be the motivating factor here... if he believes Jackie B is the better option, that's who he'll go with... his butt is on the line afterall.

i've been thinking how to match the spurs offer, its costing us $14mm and we're so far over that its tough to match. but jalen and mo both expire this year so theoretically, next two seasons we're not so far over.

You know the thing with this is, we're all complaining that we don't have
any contracts that anybody else wants. If San Antonio wants Butler, why
don't we do a sign and trade with them?

[brb]

Ok, I just checked the trade checker and reminded myself why we stink
and San Antonio is great. They don't overpay ANYone on their roster.
Coming up with a trade that makes sense for both these teams is really
hard. If anyone can come up with something fair for both, I'll give him
a gold star.

The Knicks can't get under the cap for three years anyway. I don't see the problem in matching it.
