More from draft express

http://www.draftexpress.com/viewarticle.php?mod=print&a=1334

Renaldo Balkman
Renaldo Balkman continued to help his draft stock considerably with the energy he showed and the versatility he’s brought to the table here in Orlando.
Balkman was hustling all over the place from the minute he stepped out on the floor, being all over the place both offensively and defensively and doing everything humanly possible to help his team. He was on or around every single loose both whether it was by getting in the passing lanes or hitting the offensive glass, igniting the fast break at times on his own with his above average ball-handling skills and being quicker and more motivated than anyone else on the floor to prove himself. He had two excellent blocks today, one on the perimeter on a switch, and a number of offensive numbers that he occasionally converted into a made basket before anyone could react. He didn’t show any resemblance of an outside shot, but still managed to use his slithery quickness to get to the basket and score either with a layup or an emphatic dunk.
All in all, Balkman has a legit case to be considered MVP of the entire pre-draft camp, and a likely draft pick should he decide to stay in. Sources in Orlando claim that he’s already picked an agent and will announce that fact in the coming days once he gets a final read on his draft stock.

sounds like EXACTLY what we need

Balkman had a very strong camp, jumping into the draft picture and possibly propelling himself into this year’s second round

this was a camp of guys who generally did not get drafted. i dont think the nba is going in the direction of how this kid plays. its becoming a skill league. he had 8 GAMES of 3 thats THREE or LESS points during the college season and was BENCHED DEMOTED from starter to benhc player 12 games in as an upperclassmen. this is a second round pick-----im all for giving guys this a chance, but in round 2. this whole thing that Pheonix wanted him is smoke. name 1 player in their rotation who doesnt have offensive skills? None this guy is the anti-tim thomas he is the polar opposite of suns personell. there were SEVERAL balkmans in this draft david noel bobby jones jr pinnock but they all went SECOND ROUND

if isiah traded back and acquired a future 1 i would be OK with it lived with it, but to take this guy at 20 was absurd

Every summer there's this discussion of "where the NBA is going" - and it's always just based on the most recent champion. Miami, mainly a team of two superstars with complimentary hustle players (even though the hustling players were aging all-stars themselves) like Haslem and Zo beat Dallas, a team loaded with skill players. Detroit played in two straight finals, with Ben Wallace, a completely offensively inept player starting and anchoring their team. There will always be a spot in the league for guys like Patterson, Reggie Evans, Kurt Thomas, Etan Thomas, Bruce Bowen.

heck, Raja Bell was thought of as defense only early in his career. when people here made fun of that move for PHX, you were one of the people to support it, saying he was a hard-nosed glue guy who would help them. And you were right. this move is the same philosophy. It killed me to pass on Marcus, too, but it would have led to another massive roster overhaul, which we're not even sure Zeke has been given clearance to add that kind of salary. This is a guy who fits, addresses weaknesses and maybe makes our other pieces fit better.

How are you gonna make a move with Marcus Williams? It's clear that at least 20 GMs don't want him.

19 GM's didn't want Jameer

12 GMs didn't want Kobe

16 GM's didn't want Jermaine O Neal

15 GM's didn't want Josh Smith

...
the stop underrating David Lee movement 1. FIRE MIKE 2. HIRE MULLIN 3. PAY AVERY 4. FREE NATE!!!

the roster needs a massive overhaul.

5 mid to max guards who help your team more as 2's.

2 fat centers

3 powerforwards who have no paint presence

1 tweener forward who we pased on Gomes for

Weaknesses: His biggest problem is inconsistency. There were games when he'd take over and then the next game he was no where to be found (which was HUGE in his games against Bama and then Kentucky) ... Balkman isn't a scorer, his handle is horrible. Raw offensive player, averaged under 10 ppg in his junior season ... Lacks any real range on his shot ... Very sloppy. Shot is inconsistent, he can hit from 20, but not at a good %. Needs to add around 15-20 pounds of muscle to go inside and rebound with the same effectiveness ... Turnover prone, needs to become better at protecting the ball off the dribble, and cut down on turnovers ... Shot just over 50% from the free throw line

[quote] this guy is the anti-tim thomas

And all of a sudden this guy is my second favourite NBA player (after Joel Freeland of course. Any guy who gets David Stern to hold up an England shirt on draft night is my hero)

Right and they thus wouldn't have been moveable in that initial offseason. I misunderstood if you meant keep him in NY (as one of our dozen PGs) and then trade him months or years down the road.

That's not true. Kobe made it clear that he wouldn't play for most teams.

O'Neal was 18, coming out of high school and project. It took 4+ years to develop, which is why Indiana was able to trade for him.

OTOH, tons of players were drafted high and became busts.

we took a "point" anyway.

Marcus shows in 15 minutes of time he can run an offense and a team on the pro-level like he did at UCONN his value soars.

Temple's offense was more archaic then Brown's.

the extremely heady play Macus made at the end of the Washington game in the tourney where he got the ball and advanced it to Denham on the move with a full court on the money pass is a play not made by any of our so called points be it the first minute or in a pressure packed situation like that.

Or Marcus ends up in prison for stealing things worse than computers! Can you trade a guy in prison? Maybe for an expiring contract!
