Its simple deduction-- this team is bad--they way out is by acquiring multiple young assets at this time--staying away from older-expensive players unless its a $-$ swap--this kid is a strong 6-6 multi-dimensional/skill player with top notch NBA athletic ability and long arms.

JR Smith is a player--i believe that has enormous upside and fills the bill of what i would be looking for physically in a 2G--i cant worry about the mental maturation process at this point, i have to assume that this kid is growing up[ and thats a problem with a lot of preps to pros] and that he has had some learning curves in NO. I think wed be getting him on the dirt cheap. I think pick 20 by itself could get the job done.

there is no doubt in my mind that if this kid was coming out of NC this year--hed be a top 3 pick--so the value if we can get him with 20 --is a good move---

we need a PG like marcus Williams you add JR smiths Q woods Frye's Lee---etc a pass first craft big PG like Williams makes all of these guys better--would make JR Smith look like a young Jerry Stackhouse with better FG%

a) if he's as good as you think, why would NO dump him?

b) maybe he's not as good as you think, maybe he's Deshawn Steven son, the sequel

a) He and Byron Scott don't get along.

b) Look at his #'s, he's better than Deshawn Stevenson.

I'm with Briggs on this one, he's 21 years old and has had 20 point games in the NBA and 30 point games in the NBA. He's better than Shawne Williams or Shannon Brown or anyone you can get at 20 or 29 NOW, and he has more potential than them down the road.

I'd make this move in a heartbeat.

Bring in another guy that doesn't really play defense, has a huge ego, and doesn't get along with his coach?

Look, he's got talent and in the right environment the guy could thrive. It's a pretty good deal in terms of risk/reward but I think we should concentrate all our efforts on bringing in guys that change the culture/attitude around here. We need hard workers who know how to win.

Put JR Smith on a team with a solid coach and guys that play to win and he develops into an allstar. Put him on the Knicks and he causes more turmoil and plays for his stats.

I think i would prefer to trade Nate with one of our picks than trade both picks for Smith. I think IT should get a chance to draft someone who fits in with our team. A Boone or Collins type.

the draft is about increasing the talent level of the team--i havent seen jr get arrested or get into trouble, the only thing is he didnt get along with byron scott---how many players dont get along with their coaches? yeah we need a leader on the court we dont have that and we need to find it but at 20-29 you are looking for the best talent you can get==this is a small $ decision with huge upside a no-brainer

Jr smith looked good in year one. Byron Scott is old school so he probably was trying to make Jr pay his dues. Maybe Jr thought he could get veteran treatment at age 20.

That's my take on it cuz Jr was awesome in his first year. Knicks would be lucky to hey him but what does that mean? What direction are the knicks going into? The knicks have some contracts that are just not gonna go away.

difference in playing for a team with a shot at the play-offs vs playing for a team headed for a top 4 pick wasn't quite clear to JR last year.

1 on 3 fast breaks, 26 foot 3 pointers with time on the shot clock, no 12-18 foot game so he'd dribble too deep and commit silly turnovers or float around aimlessly without the ball.

Doubt they move him if he commits to improving mentally. But if NOK does, they were willing to trade him for Barry, why would NY give up much?

to me, the spurs are the smartest team in the league and they RARELY make mistakes--they do--like all teams, but they arent deals they can remove themselves from if it doesnt workout.

just the fact that the spurs were interested in JR Smith speaks volumes ----you are not going wrong following the spurs tails. I dont care if they have a vet team with leadership--they wouldnt bring in someone if they thought he was a bad seed.
its a frikin NO brainer anyone over-analyzing
this has no clue
this is a 6-6 225 20 YO SG with superior athletiscm multi-skilled with long arms and power who can go in and out. the spurs tried to trade for him--enough said--if there is any chance to get him for frikin pick 20--do it

Only problem is the money doesn't work. It'd have to be a sign and trade-type deal. Would you lock up Smith long term, a la Crawford, at about 7-8 mil. per to make it work? That's the question.

Fans, well knick fans dont get it the NY Knicks were the ONLY team to bid for eddy curry--he has a LARGE contract with NO insurance and hasnt showed he can play up to it YET. NO team--especially a small market team would EVER deal for him. even if eddy curry turns out to be better it still doesnt change the fact that the NY Knicks were the ONLY willing trade partner and somehow the BULLS made Isiah give them what they wanted

eddy curry fetched more than vince carter for goodness sakes--- until the NY Knicks acquire savvy management or the CURRENT managment learns how to say NO and STOP overpaying even at the expense of not getting a targeted player--we will suffer like we are now

It might not be a good idea to pretend we know the level of interest each GM had in Eddy Curry. I agree his trade value is shot right now, though.

We're always gonna have to make deals for guys with ? marks. At least for a little while longer. Heck the guy at the heart of this thread is a risky move. Its not the best way to do things, but in our case it may be the only way until we get past Steph's contract.

The important thing is that we try to find players that will help this team. Guys who have more BB IQ than some of the guys we've gotten in the past. I like the talent this guy has, but JR doesn't seem to have the BB IQ that i'd like from the players we add from now on. That's why I liked the Frye pick cuz he was a guy who was prepared to play in this league and I hope for him to become a team leader one day.

I'm more interested in Speedy anything the kNicks have to offer to get him on the team. Maybe Nate and the 20th pick.
