i still think Chicago initially saw the heart thing as a way of signing Curry more cheaply. They feared (and maybe rightly so!) that giving Curry a max long term contract would mean an end to any effort on his behalf and also probably thought (again correctly!) that he's not worth the max. So when the heart thing came along they thought they'd up play it to scare off other teams and lower his value.
