It always amazes me how people seem to feel that criticizing the Knicks means you're not a fan. Most of us have been Knicks fans longer than any of the players have been Knicks, and will be fans long after they've retired or been traded. And last season those players were an embarassment to their fans and to their franchise. We don't owe them anything. Those of us who are worried about entering this season as currently constructed are worried because this team bears a striking resemblance to last year's team, a team that did, on a purely objective level, suck. Layden has addressed the two major weaknesses (PG and C) with an iffy rookie and Michael Freaking Doleac, the man whose game was too dull for Cleveland (Cleveland!). Sure, we've got Dyess, but we gave up our one shotblocker to do so. Moreover, Layden (or more accurately, Dolan) chose not to address the most glaring problem, which is that the entire roster quit less than halfway through the season. Blaming Van Gundy just infantilizes the players, and makes excuses for Don Chaney that he doesn't deserve. He could not wring 48 minutes of effort from his players even once, and he should have been fired. Either that or get him some new team leaders, anything to inject a little heart. Instead, 'the nicest man in basketball' is back at the helm, and his team captain is once again Milquetoast Houston (Spree, for all his virtues, has shown he has no interest in leading).
Being a Knick fan, I obviously am hoping that Williams becomes this year's Tinsley, that Dyess has another career-year like in Phoenix, that Houston finds a heart and that Ward falls down an empty elevator shaft. Being a LONG-TIME Knick fan, I'm afraid we're in for another frustrating season watching a team without an identity that's been designed to win just enough games to sell a few playoff tickets. I root for the franchise, not for the management, not for the owners, and not for millionaires who can't be bothered to give a night's honest effort.
