i'm not trying to knock his idea... who knows, it might be a great one... i'm just commenting on the sad state of affairs when people are coming up w/inexperienced former players as better solutions than our current GM.

sad state of affairs is exactly right. but i think we may be better off going with a more mellow, behind the scenes type of guy (ala joe dumars, another example and VERY similar characteristics of h20) running the ship.

there's a reason detroit passed up on isiah to take dumars...

The guy never played for him. Hmm.

Yes he did. Allan played under Brown for the Summer olympic team, while Larry was the assistant, but I get what you're saying, regardless.

Motivation: working way up means big hours on the job.

Isiah is motivated. He did not earn the big big money, and who knows how he has invested or saved his.

Allan will have earned over $100 million. Say, 130 mil. Say he did a decent job of investing and after taxes has 75mil. 75mil invested in NY state tax free bonds is 2.2mil a year TAX FREE! IM not saying thats what he is doing, but thats a lot of free cash flow!

Isiah Makes 4 mil a year. And has to work for it. I can see Allan doing some TV, and other things.

Other Thing I do is keep rehabbing that knee and maybe give it one more shot. Never know.

Joe Dumars was pretty mild-mannered as a player.Yet and still he was able to make the call on firing Carlisle after 2 50 win seasons and the ECF's to hire Larry. And then able to make the call to fire Larry for flirting with Cleveland and NY and hire Flip.
the stop underrating David Lee movement 1. FIRE MIKE 2. HIRE MULLIN 3. PAY AVERY 4. FREE NATE!!!

That flat out took balls.

I am throwing Greg Anthony's name into the mix. He strikes me as a very intelligent young man that knows hoops.

Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Doc Rivers, Terry Porter, Chris Mullen, Kiki... I'm sure there are others but all went straight to GM/Pres/head coaching jobs.

crzymdups - Jalen trade = Isiah not going anywhere anytime soon.

fisnmike - if you want a former player who's hanging around the locker room, why not Walt Frazier as your next GM?

Why not Earl Monroe?

Why not the scholarly Dick Barnett or Cazzie Russell?

I can get you Bernard Kings phone number.

Why stop at President of Basketball Ops?... Why not start at the very top?...

I don't have any inside juicy gossip on the ongoing vicioous power struggles between Isiah and Larry, but if I ruled the world...

I would install Bill Bradley as the next owner, Clyde as President of Basketball Operations and Manager of Style, Louis Orr as Head Coach, Cazzie as Director of Scouting and Spike Lee in Anucha's old office as Marketing Director.

But that will never happen

Houston would be a perfect fit. He already understands the inner-workings of bloated contracts and he can understand overpaid players from the player's point of view. SIGN HIM!!

well I picked H20 because of Larry's praise for him and the personal relationship he has with Dolan. I know Clyde doesnt want the responsibility. He's said as much. He said flat out once he's got the greatest job in the world. Mike Breen once asked him if he wanted to coach ever. Clyde said "I seek tranquility, not hostility. I dont need the stress man. Plus I have too much fun hanging with you."

Hard to forget that.

Earl.. I dont know much about those guys. They were before my time.

This was just an idea I posted but it popped in my head because I think its plausable.

I never thought about Houston being a GM... I think he would make a better assistant coach though.

Better would be L Brown as coach and gm. He knows exactly who he wants and he wouldn't have to fight with anyone to get something done... Although it won't be good for his health.

Mac - I like Larry Brown back home in New York a ton. I simply worry about his health and his wanderlust kicking in within the next three years, before the torch is effectively passed to the next guy.

The Knicks need stability in leadership, and not change for the sake of change.

fishmike - just messin' with you. Our points of view may vary, but I have I mentioned that I've always considered you one of the most intelligent posters in this crazy place?

Straight Up

You missed some great hoops back in the day.

Well mchale has done a great job, so has mullin, rivers. Fishy thank g-d you're not in charge of the knicks. How do you know houston can evaluate talent, deal with contracts, etc. but if larry has nice things to say about him then lets put him in charge of all basketball operations and set this franchise back another 10 yrs. don't take this personal but what a DUMB idea.

fishmike 9/27/2024 11:00 PM Ug I hate this. The idea of Towns is great until you see what a pussy he is. Jules is a dog. DD was a flamethrower locked up cheap for 3 more years. First Leon move I hate

dude... read my post. Where did I say I wanted Houston to be GM? My whole point was thought this was plausable and I gave reasons why. I have no idea why the Garden signed Isiah in first place to be honest, and why they didnt throw a gazillion at a guy who's got a proven track record and history. Petrie, Thorn, Walsh, etc. Not even sure I would take Kiki.

Houston fits the mold of the kind of guys Dolan likes.

Ewing should be more of a consideration than Houston. He and Ernie worked together to bring in guys like Houston. Ewing is a true fan of the game, despite what he tries to convey to the press. He has a couple of years of experience as a assistant coaches, he is respected around the league by players, gms, coaches and agents alike. He is a savy business man as well. Ewing breaks down talent well enough in the past. I know he watches college games (especially Big East games). I am not convince of Walsh that much. The Knicks wanted O'Neal but the Pacers wouldn't trade with them, I mean Walsh signed off on a lot of weird contracts himself.

They hired Isiah for the splash...for name recognition. They thought he'd make headlines and put butts in the seats. For gosh sakes, their first choice was Magic Johnson! It's clear the Dolans are not about winning and are more about marketing.

Larry Bird had great assistant coaches to help him along the way... Kevin McHale's been a horrible GM so far... the jury's still out on Doc Rivers & Terry Porter as head coaches... Chris Mullin's done a so-so job in my view, nothing to write home about... same w/Kiki V.

TMS... no arguement there, only that there is clearly a sentiment to giving young fresh blood a chance.

Remember.. this is just something I thought of, not something I'm advocating. Although at this point I'm open to any change
