Why exactly are the Raptors going to give up their #1 pick when they currently have the worst record in the NBA?

well let's not make light of it: there are $16M reasons not to keep Rose that extra year. And they do need to extend Bosh and probably sign a free agent to make the team competitive enough for Bosh to want to stay (look at what Cleveland has had to do in fear of losing the King).

Toronto has a ton of first round picks over the next few years, so maybe not Toronto's own #1, but some of the others.

they could also keep a top three pick to make the team competitive.

I don't think that they'll trade their first this year, but perhaps we can get either a future first or a player that would make it worthwhile to have an extra year of a worthless player with a high salary.

Vecsey reports that the Raptors have Denver's first (which they got from the Nets in the Carter trade) and that's the Knicks price to take Rose's contract.

http://www.nypost.com/sports/59342.htm

December 23, 2005 -- IF the Raptors want to eradicate Jalen Rose's $16.9 million salary next season from their cap, they have but one viable option: Furnish the Knicks with the Nuggets' No. 1 pick stashed from the Nets' shoplifting of Vince Carter, along with Rose's Canadian passport for rising free agent Penny Hardaway.
There ain't no more to it!

Yes, the Lakers have interest in Rose, who turns 33 on Jan. 30. That's a confirmed fact.

There might even be another team or two intrigued by the 6-8 swingman's cultured skill to score, pass and make plays. That's an unadulterated guess.

Yet, according to a know-it-all scrutinizing Rose's relocation odds, there isn't a reckless NBA owner other than James Dolan willing to burden his bulging books with a contract that would cost currently luxury-tax capsized Camp Cablevision $33.8M.

Still, as hopeless as the stammering Knicks look, and as depressed as their fans are, and as desolate as the Garden may become if their 6-18 record gets any shoddier, not even a filthy rich dunce like Dolan is going to hemorrhage that much currency for a player Isiah Thomas ran out of Indiana with Travis Best (reaping Ron Artest, Brad Miller, Ron Mercer and Kevin Ollie in exchange) unless the first-round pick is packaged.

Don't get me wrong; it's not as if the Raptors are uncompromising. A Toronto source reveals the pick is on the table, but not without limits: "The unanswered question is how deep into the draft will it be protected from year to year."

yea.. $17mm for a pick in the 20s in a weak draft is absurd. Their unprotected 2006 #1 or nothing. Kiss off.

Guys...you silly gooses.

If you had a guaranteed top 5 pick, and wanted to unload Rose, would YOU include it?

Thought not....
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

If I was Tor and unloading Rose meant I would free up max cap space to make trades or sign players than yes silly goose, I would indeed. They have 3 very talented young players in Graham, Bosh and Charlie V. Dumping Rose would let them make major moves BEFORE they have to give Bosh major coin. It makes a ton of sense for them.

Well, you sillier goose, if you checked the FA list, you'd notice there's nothing there for Toronto to care about.

Nene and Pryzbilla is about it.

cap space lets you do a lot more than just sign FAs. You can trade for a max level contract player and you arent obligated to match salary. I would think that would be the biggest appeal for Tor anyway. Its not exactly a hotbed for FAs to sign. If a team is willing to move a player just to get them off the books than Tor becomes the perfect spot. Tor could trade Matt Bonner and a #2 for Darius Miles and Patterson for example. I'm not going to get into trade scenarios but there's not a lot you cant do. Its sometimes an even bigger incentive for a team to trade a player and get nothing but a 2nd rounder back because they get a trade exception. Much like the Nets did with Kittles.

So the value is there. People that only think cap space is usefull for FAs just dont know the CBA. Its the end all be all for flexibility and being able to make moves.

Right now Denver is a lottery team

Wow; we agree. That's actually the exact same reasoning I used earlier.
