Let me ask you this: would you let your son play for a basketball coach and his assistants and with some players that you knew were homosexual?

yes if my son wanted to play and makes his own decisions

I was assuming your son was still a boy not an adult.

I didn't realize most young boys already know they are gay lol

I think many do, I don't see what's so funny about that:)

BTW, I don't really see how this should be a real issue. If a guy in the NBA came out of the closet, I'm sure there wouldn't be a damaged PR image. However, I have a feeling, based on how stupid most people really are, the image of the WNBA WOULD be hurt, just b/c it's the womens league and a lot of people would want to make up excuses to make it look bad. It's sexcism and predjudism at it's highest form. Very sad. If I were in charge though, I'd say "Who gives a F'??"

That's the reason why I think the league will be hurt. In the NBA, no, I don't think it would be an issue. However, I also don't think any NBA player would bother coming out with something like this. 99 out of 100 people couldn't have gave a **** otherwise. It's something you want to be discrete with, though, even so.

I disagree about the sexism and prejudism comments, though. The entire WNBA is a sexist league. Think about it: it's women only, it's only marketed towards females (and possibly gay males), it's given a cutesy image, and competition isn't even their big selling point. I think the league is inately sexist. If they get the kind of response like the one I'm predicting, then I think they only have themselves to blame for how they set up the league in the first place.

As much as people want to believe sexuality isn't a big deal and everyone is able to control themselves--that's just not the case. The Catholic priests are an example of that.

.. and just for the record. Regarding homosexuality, it seems so "accepted" nowadays, yet 2/3 of the population is against gay marriage. It's accepted... but only among 1/3 of the population. Keep that in mind.

Good for Swoopes. I think this could be good for the league--- now that it's out in the open, I think lesbians and open-minded folk will embrace the WNBA even more.

Yeah, the old "lesbian" marketing ploy--I am pretty sure that only works for pornography...

Because your son may be at a vulnerable age and you are careful about who you want to be a major influence on him. And you don't want the coach eyeballing your son in the shower room...

I think this will have absolutely no affect on the WNBA. Most guys don't watch the WNBA because it's boring. Until they are high flying dunk machines the majority of the fans will be women. Also most guys assume that the players are gay anyway so hearing someone come out means nothing to them. I just did an informal pole of 20 guys at my office and the only responses were "who", "WNB....what", "I thought she came out years ago". Noone cares, but the media will turn it into an anti gay spectacle with men rioting in the streets and picketing outside WNBA games.
I just hope that people will like me

Btw, in her story, she mentions that there are other gay players, as well as straight ones...

On a lighter note, I hope Becky Hammon is straight.

I just thought it was interesting to see how the WNBA handles its un-mainstream image as compared to Stern's use of a dresscode to play down the "thug" image. The good thing for the WNBA is that most of their players already wear pants and collared shirts.

Would you let your daughter play for a male coach?

Just cuz a man is gay, don't mean he"s a pedophile. Not all gay men are into boys, as are all men into little girls!

The fact that the league is un-mainstream is exactly why she shouldn't have said anything, anyway. If she didn't come out with this, nobody would've known or cared.

Uh oh. The WNBA is facing a huge PR crisis unless they can stick a lid on many of their openly gay players. I suggest a mandatory dress code--literally, a real "dress" code. Every player must where either a skirt or dress (patterned in a floral design) while on WNBA business. Makeup, especially blush, is mandatory. Hair must be worn below the neckline--absolutely no crew cuts ladies! iPods may be used while traveling but must be updated with the Butch Song Filter Pro v.1.5--any evidence of Melissa Etheridge, KD Lang, or the Indigo Girls results in an immediate 10 game suspension and a public date with Fabio. More details to come.

Oh shutup.

It's about freakin time the WBAN or whatever their name is started closing shop.

Don't they get it? It's not a sexist thing - but gurls SUCK at sports compared to men. It's simple as that. Nobody enjoys watching them play b/c it looks like a bunch of highschool kids.

If I wanted to watch chicks do 2-handed layups I'd go to my local highschool and watch prettier, younger gurls do it......
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

There are many stories where coaches befriend the young players and stay in their lives until they are officially no longer young--ESPN ran a story early in the year about a male girl's coach who did just that. I'm saying wherever you have a coach who has sexual interest in the gender of his players--you have to be super cautious especially when it involves alot of time spent together in intimate settings like locker rooms, traveling, hotels, and the sort. Humans aren't saints...

Oh shut up. I always used to watch my sister's softball tournaments and it was very fun to watch.
