Interesting article from the times that started as a Quenting article but morphed into LB's philosophy (imho):

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/25/sports/basketball/25knicks.html

GREENBURGH, N.Y., Oct. 24 - The disorientation wore off weeks ago. Forced to leap time zones (from Mountain to Eastern) and ratchet down expectations (by about 30 victories), Quentin Richardson smiled and said he welcomed the move from sunny Phoenix to gritty New York.

Whatever he lost in potential glory when the Suns traded him to the Knicks in June, Richardson figured to regain in personal fulfillment. After being typecast as a 3-point gunner with the Suns, Richardson said he would return to being the all-around scorer he was earlier in his career.

At the moment, he would settle for just being healthy, productive and sure of his role.

Among the many unsettled issues confronting the Knicks in their final week of preseason tuneups is where Richardson fits into the scheme. He is viewed as the likely starter at small forward, but a nagging hamstring injury has kept him out for most of the month.

Richardson will again be a spectator for Tuesday night's game at Philadelphia, but he could potentially return in time for the preseason finale against the Nets on Friday. The Knicks have offered no update on Richardson's status, although he said Monday, "I'm feeling a lot better."

"I just try and communicate with the assistant coaches and pay attention and learn as much as I can on the side," said Richardson, who was acquired, along with Nate Robinson, in a trade for Kurt Thomas. "I just like to get out there and do whatever I can to help the team win, so I don't think I'll have a big problem with fitting in."

Richardson first strained the hamstring Oct. 5, the second day of training camp. He reinjured it in the Knicks' second preseason game, on Oct. 16. He said he probably came back too soon.

Richardson said he was aiming to be ready by the Knicks' opener, next Tuesday in Boston. His inactivity has been merely one of many complications facing Coach Larry Brown in his first season with the Knicks.

The Knicks' top two centers, Eddy Curry and Jerome James, are out of shape and have been outplayed at times by Jackie Butler, the Knicks' rawest prospect. Antonio Davis, who could be the best option at power forward, just joined the team.

Among the probable starters, only Jamal Crawford and Stephon Marbury are averaging more than 20 minutes in the preseason. Otherwise, Brown has given the most minutes to the second-year pro Trevor Ariza and the three rookies, Robinson, Channing Frye and David Lee.
The playing time at small forward has gone mostly to Ariza and the journeyman Matt Barnes, who appears likely to make the team after signing a nonguaranteed deal earlier this month.

Neither Ariza nor Barnes have Richardson's gift for scoring, but they are better defenders. They also have the advantage of playing every day and learning Brown's system.

"It'd be nicer if he was there," Brown said of Richardson. "But look at all the time Trevor's gotten to play and how much better he's gotten. And then Nate's gotten extra minutes. Jamal and Stephon have had to change roles a little bit because of him. So in some ways, it's been a blessing."

The teacher in Brown has been practically giddy with his new team. Twelve of the 18 players on the roster are 25 or younger, which means Brown has probably stopped practice to point out mistakes even more often than usual.

"Our whole team is made up of young kids," he said. "You have a responsibility to teach them and show them, and then the neat thing about that is, while you're telling those guys, your real conscientious veterans will listen and then they learn."

Soon, however, the games will matter, and the Knicks - with a payroll exceeding $120 million - will be expected to win some of them. It could pose a quandary for Brown, who will have to choose between developing his young prospects on the fly, or playing his veterans while the rookies watch.

The blueprint has already changed drastically since Brown took the job in July. Allan Houston has retired, and Tim Thomas and Mike Sweetney were shipped out in the Curry trade.

As Brown noted on Monday, "This is not a team that we all knew from the first day."

"If you had asked me the starting team when I first got the job, I thought it would be Jerome, Sweetney, Timmy Thomas and probably Stephon and Quentin," Brown said. "That was what I was led to believe. All of a sudden, things have really changed. And it's a good thing. I hate to see Sweetney and Timmy go, because they're really quality players, but we got a quality young kid who has huge upside.

"But so much has changed now. Tony Davis is thrown in the mix. Quentin has been injured. The rookies probably played a lot more than maybe they would have, had we had everybody. So it's changed things."

no doubt

Frye will more than fill Kurt's role,,,,because that boy can shoot, block shots, rebound, and you can actually run an offense through him. Kurt was only known for his scoring and rebounding....Frye just has to get playing time.

As for Frye, I think his scoring will come, and offensively, he'll easily fill Kurt Thomas's role and then some b/c he seems to be a better offensive player. If Crawford can go and do what you and I would like of him, then we're really set. If not, some trades are going to have to be made.

me thinks trevor will be a star this year in the teyshawn mold...I think he's well on his way...he gets a handle and a mid range jumper and he has...dare I say it...McGrady possibilities. (IMHFO)

It would be nice....That kid can flat out play. If Trevor gets minutes, especially given the fact that we have a front court that can score and occupy space on the court, Trevor will be able to showcase his talent. He just has to develop a little chemistry with the primary ball handler (Marburry). Marb will have to help these kids become stars..

Its not outragous to think. he must get his shot to allow him less spacing. HE can blow by anyone if they respect his shot.

His intangables are crazy. The steals and defensive pressure open so much. Things not found in Box score. I don't think this is his breakout year, but he is not far from stardom if that outside shot becomes a reality.

Brown will do the teaching, but those boys will need someone like Marb to create and orchestrate for them on the court. Dudes,,,I am so excited about this upcoming season, it is sickening

Here is a quote from Marb that speaks volume.....I can't wait to see the real team in action....

And to say the most? “We are beginning to see the outlines of something much, much better happening here,” said Marbury. “And, well, what can I say? It is a very nice feeling.”

Some people read a lot into quotes that mean little to other people I guess.

Q being injured means Barnes will make the team to backup Ariza.

I hope Q can come back quickly.

Yes. He was the closest thing we had to a pure shooter. We still need one regardless, but this shows it even more.

Maybe the Kings will suck and we can workout a mid-season trade for Peja.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Peja would be perfect for a team like the Knicks although I would really love someone like a young Houston (Detroit days) who has the touch but some athlethicism as well. This Knick team reminds me alot of the 95-96 Knicks that had little outside shooting. Still remember Nelson calling on Ewing to take that 3 point shoot "because he was the team's best shooter." Q and Frye maybe the team's best shooters.
I don't like to play bad rookies , I like to play good rookies - Mike D'Antoni
