I've said this before, this was their best draft since the mid-60's. There were 3 other good overall drafts in the late `70's where we got guys like Ray Williams, Toby Knight, Michael Ray, Cartwright, Sly Williams, Hollis Copeland and some other guys, but almost all of them got screwed up by injuries or drugs.

I may be wrong on the year-but 1964 the Knx drafted IM "Bad News Barnes" a solid PF and on the second round a guy by the name of Reed.

In 1966 they drafted a couple of guys named Cazzie Russell and Bill Bradley

In 1967 they drafted Clyde and guy by the name of Phil Jackson and it was Bradley's rookie year.

Those were bad drafts.

Does anyone remember who the knx drafted the same year they got Ewing?

yea in that same year the knicks drafted Gerald wilkins, Ken Banister and Eddie lee wilkins I think. I went to the first preaseaon game that year at the Garden...

nope, eddie lee and ken bannister were a year before ewing-remember eddie wilkins had a huge game his first game his rookie season, played pretty well but quietly went to the abysss, ken bannister had some moments too, but he was along the same lines

My bad, I know they were close in years being drafted, I went to the first preaseaon game with Ewing and Bannister and wilkens had great games.. I saw Eddie lee wilking down here in georgia about 11 years ago, at a sporting goods store, we spoke for a while, his knees he said basically ended his NBA career...

Wilkins had an exciting debut, then basically blew out his knee. People were overjoyed with him, though, until that happened.

Don’t tell me not to live,
Just sit and putter,
Life’s candy and the sun’s
A ball of butter.
Don’t bring around a cloud
To rain on my parade.
Don’t tell me not to fly--
I’ve simply got to.
If someone takes a spill,
It’s me and not you.
Who told you you’re allowed
To rain on my parade!
I’ll march my band out,
I’ll beat my drum,
And if I’m fanned out,
Your turn at bat, sir.
At least I didn’t fake it.
Hat, sir, I guess I didn’t make it!
But whether I’m the rose
Of sheer perfection,
Or freckle on the nose
Of life’s complexion,
The cinder or the shiny apple of it’s eye,
I gotta fly once,
I gotta try once,
Only can die once, right, sir?
Ooh, love is juicy,
Juicy, and you see
I gotta have my bite, sir!
Get ready for me, love,
’cause I’m a comer,
I simply gotta march,
My heart’s a drummer.
Don’t bring around a cloud
To rain on my parade!

I’m gonna live and live now,
Get what I want--i know how,
One roll for the whole shebang,
One throw, that bell will go clang,
Eye on the target--and wham--
One shot, one gun shot, and bam--
Hey, mister arnstein, here I am!
I’ll march my band out,
I will beat my drum,
And if I’m fanned out,
Your turn at bat, sir,
At least I didn’t fake it.
Hat, sir, I guess I didn’t make it.
Get ready for me, love,
’cause I’m a comer,
I simply gotta march,
My heart’s a drummer.
Nobody, no, nobody
Is gonna rain on my parade!

Funny but I was going to say that it was the worst draft in Knicks history. Imagine 3 1st rd picks and none of them becoming a solid NBA starter. That's pretty bad. Of course that has as much validity as saying that it's the best before any of them have even played an NBA game. But why be objective when you can pour yourself a Super Big Gulp sized Kool-Aid and make stupid proclamations.

Hey man you're a Nets fan aren't you. You can tell me. The first step in rehab is admitting you have a problem

Why wait for history's verdict? The Knicks should just retire Curry's, Q's, Nate's, Frye's and Lee's numbers now.

I'm excited about the young guys playing and what they bring to the table, mostly on the defensive end. I think they will challenge the veterans and force them to up their play on that end of the floor as well, because if they dont LB will play them.

That being said what isles said is somewhat fair. Lets see them do some things on the NBA level first. I like their prospects. I have no doubt Frye will be a good starter. Lee and Nate have shown some good signs... time will tell but its time I can enjoy.

I agree but couldn't that be said for every single draft in draft history. Let's see what anyone does at the professional level before we declare someone the next anything. Or does this just apply to the Knicks? And this stuff about not getting any franchise players. Can we determine that on draft nite, who is a franchise player and who is not. I know some players are hyped and presumed to be a "franchise" type but what about those who fade into Europe. Some people don't think none of the Knick draft picks will be all-star type players, may be true and all signs currently point in that direction but I also in my opinion don't think the number 1 pick in this year's draft will be an afterthought 3 years from now. Though he may be the next great big man. Its a crapshoot and you hope the guys running your team comes out smelling like roses.

I like the enthusiasm here, Dido. I think you are right this has the potential to be the best draft ever. I don't really think you can judge for a few years though. If these guys win a ring with the Knicks then its a def YES!

Don't want to be snitty but if someone bookmarked Isles opinion about the draft right after the draft. Would we find rational objective thought?? Not to be snitty.

thats a good post. Its silly to argue either way. There is no science to this, if there was guys like Ben Wallace and Brad Miller wouldnt have slipped through the cracks on draft night.

I guess the thing is do you like the draft or not, and if not who would you rather have selected? I wouldnt mind seeing Isles answer this.

I'm happy with Nate and Lee. I probably would have taken Blatch with one of those if it was me but I like Nate and Lee. I have already said that Diogu or Bynum were my favorites with the #8 pick. That being said watching Frye both in the tourney and in these preseason games has certainly boosted my confidence.

James is 30 years old for goodness sake! Curry has played 4 years. Q is 25!

How can you include them?
We drafted Antonio Davis this offseason too!

We also drafted Matt Barnes and re-drafted Jamison Brewer.

it appears that it will be a fine, fine draft, but even if you added Curry to that mix, it doesnt hold Patrick Ewing's jockstrap. Remember we also got Gerald Wilins in that draft, and it wil be hard pressed to find a guy as good as Gerald. Maybe there will be, but Patrick is a top 20 player of all time and couldve brought the knicks to 5-6 finals if things just went a little different. Eddie Curry is NOT a player who comes around every 15-20 years--hes a better version of jahidi white at this point, guys like hakeem ewing isiah thomas are guys who come around 15-20 years. Guys like patrick Robinson et al,dont just do one thing well, they dominate the game with scoring defense rebounding all facets--those are players that come around every so often. Right now, as much as Curry looks good scoring against weak interior teams, his game would need to go to a next level.

Hate to be the nay-sayer around here, but I don't buy Ewing top 20 all time.
Perhaps top 20 in the last 20 years?
Even just looking at centers, above him (or comparable) in the last 20 years are:
Shaq
Parrish
Kareem
Hakeem
Robinson
Zo
Add in the other 4 positions, and I'll guess you get nearly 20.

Also, I don't get all this hype about Gerald Wilkins. He sucked. Couldn't shoot sh!t.

I will give you Shaq, Kareem and Hakeem. Parrish is a wash at best and Ewing was simply better than Robinson or Zo despite comparible numbers.

Top 20 is close.. Ewing is probably right around there.

While I agree with what you are saying no way do I even begin to think of Zo as being on his level. The numbers don't support it and the head to head doesn't either. Same with Parish, while the Celts would usually come out on top in their meetings and the Chief gave him everything he could handle, Ewing would still put up better numbers and the Chief could rely on Bird and McHale to go to work. Not the case for Ewing (that's why I put 89 playoff series as one of Ewing's greatest). David is right on Ewing's level, the MVP and championship may cause him to be either a top above or on the same level though. But keep in mine many of the past big men are so overrated it is ridculous. Put some of these guys back in the past and dominate just as easy.
