Houston brought more to the organisation than just great numbers. He brought commitment, professionalism, a lot of things that are lacking today. He carried the team at it's worst and never complained.

He derserves to have his number retired.

If this were an Organisation like the Spurs, who value the things that Houston brought, this wouldn't even be up for debate.

as far as the marbury hof or # retiring thing- does Nash or Kidd derserve it?
Nash was MVP last year, and right now, he doesn't deserve either. Same for Kidd.

Kidd should be pretty close to the hall of fame right now: 7 time all-star 5-time first team all NBA.

He was more of an MVP his first year with the Nets than Nash was last year for the Suns.

Nash has not put up HOF numbers etc. in his career, but the MVP moved him a lot closer than he was.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

Houston was classy and a very good player, but no way should he have his number retired. That is something that should be reserved for truly special players like Ewing and the greats of the championship teams, who deserved it in part because they were part of something truly special. But you never know these days, so perhaps they'll do it.

Absolutely. Kidd is a lock for the Hall of Fame, and deservedly so. Among his many accomplishments, he's one of only four players to lead the league in assists three straight seasons. The other three: Oscar, Stockton and Cousy. And he all but single-handdly turned the Nets completely around and led them to where no one in their right mind thought the'd get.

And this is coming from a Knicks fan, not a Nets fan.

Marbury hasnt done crap yet but put up good numbers. I dont think he's any more a franchise player than Houston or Sprewell was. If he's running the team when we win a title or two get back to me. Otherwise he's got a long way to go

agreed. asking for marbury to win a championship is a lot. How about winning a post season series first or better yetleading your team to the playoffs instead of putting up stats on mediocre teams

IF he played these last 3 years at the high level he did before he went down I would say yes. Our fate as a team would have been different and he would have been viewed differently by the fans and players. But that did not happen so I have to say no.

I wouldn't retire Houston's. I might retire Oakley's number though...

I'd say probably not, but it wouldn't be bad if they actually did it. If they did, however, they have to do the same for Oakley who's done just as much for the Knicks in different ways.

Ewing was the only Knick who was legendary enough to have his number retired the past 20yrs. Period. end of story

Retire Marbury's number? I can't see how we're even speculating about that now. That's just absurd.

Houston has a special place in Knicks' history, if only for "The Shot" against Miami and hanging in there for so long, but I don't think his number should be retired. The bar for retiring a number has to be pretty high, IMO.

On the other hand, he's a great pal of Dolan's, so I guess it's possible.

I don't care what anyone is saying in this thread......

All I wanna know is why would anyone agree to Houston retiring his number? If he missed that shot in Miami he would be retiring from another team right now.

Exactly! like 10-15yrs of leading your team to consective playoffs appearances and performing in multiple aspects of the game and most importantly DOMINATING both ends of the floor. That makes Ewing the only one worthy in the past 20yrs. I can't believe this is even a discussion

Please, don't crucify me for what I'm going to say but stop the Oakley, Starks, Houston comparison.
I mean, Oakley and Starks were nice, they worked as hard as anyone there and the Knicks were an excellent team with both playing. But if you look objetively around the league, they were BELOW average starters and MAYBE they were the reason the Knicks did not end up with a championship. Oakley was a 10ppg 10rpg player with a nice defense (very similar to what kurt thomas is right now although Oakley was a much better defense) and zero post moves. And Starks was a three point chucker with the heart of a lion. He was also a great defender, although Jordan scored more than 30 every time he guarded him. (I know Jordan did that to almost anyone but...)
I'm not saying that Houston is better than them, nor that they were bad. I have always liked Oakley and specially Starks a lot, but I would never considered them to be excellent players.
Houston is of course not as good defender as Starks and Oakley were, but his offensive skills, or just say it: just his jumpshot, was so much better that he should be consider at least as good as the other two. I consider "Houston did not play hard" rant very unfair. I'm sure the mayority of people who are against Houston are the ones who loved him in 1999. Just a bad contract can change your mind!!
I would like Oakley and Starks to have his jersey retired of course, but I would not be mad if they'd retire Houston's without the other two. Is it so bad to retire the jersey of a guy who played 9 seasons and averaged almost 19 ppg as a Knick and played always very good in the play-offs?
Just my opinion.

or better yetleading your team to the playoffs
He has done that part several times (four years). He obviously has to win a few playoff series to have any chance of making the HOF though.

I remembered when they were going throught the whole gauntlet about retiring Ewing's number. And there was much to do about him not winning a championship but holds nearly every Knick record. Something he even addressed during his speech. If Ewing had to deal with that with holding nearly every Knick record, how in the world could anyone justify Houston being retired? Hell I would retire Starks, Oakley and Mason numbers before I get to Allan and to be fair you might as well nominate Spree for retirment honors too.
