Curry wears 34; is Davis' number up? BY GREG LOGAN STAFF CORRESPONDENT
October 11, 2005
CHARLESTON, S.C. - When Eddy Curry was traded to the Knicks, he said he wanted to wear No. 34, but in deference to Antonio Davis, who was traded with him from Chicago, he would take No. 32.
When Curry wore No. 34 in practice yesterday, it seemed to suggest there might be some truth to the rumors that the 37-year-old Davis will receive a buyout. For the third straight day, Davis remained in Chicago attending to family problems. Knicks coach Larry Brown said team president Isiah Thomas told him Davis might return in time for the final two days of training camp, but he was not in Charleston last night and his arrival is uncertain.
"The sooner the better," Brown said. "But we'll see."
Thomas has indicated he's not worried about when Davis arrives because he played four seasons under Brown early in his career and should adjust quickly. Brown added, "I don't worry about what we don't have. I'm concerned about preparing these guys."
Late camp for Knicks
Several teams opened their preseason schedules last night, but the Knicks were able to extend their training camp through tomorrow because they don't play until Saturday night, when they meet the Nets. Brown expects to use a lot of the young players early, and he emphasized that he doesn't worry about results until they count. "I don't think I ever had a winning record in exhibitions except when I was in the ABA [with the Carolina Cougars]," Brown said. "That was because we were trying to beat NBA teams ... I think we were basically .500 every year wherever I've been."
Time off for Penny
Veteran Penny Hardaway spent yesterday's scrimmage on the sideline with injured players Maurice Taylor, Quentin Richardson and Allan Houston. Hardaway, who has been playing more two-guard, said Brown gave him the option to take some time off.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year.
GO KNICKS!
