that's right I believe it would help minorities tremendously--if anyone disagrees that an added two hours a day and a half day on Sat wouldn't be extremely beneficial to everyone, ESPECIALLY minorities, you are flat out wrong.

How many "minorities" do you know? Are YOU one of these "minorities"? This has a real stereotypical stench to it.

Says who? Are you implying that "minorities" are incapable to take care and discipline their children? This statement is an insult to all of the "minority" parents who SUCCESSFULLY raise and discipline their children, thank you.

--with a two hour mandatory daily homework session and a half day on SAT would be a HUGE RELIEVE for parents and HIGHLY beneficial for kids. 14 hours a week extra to help kids learn--thats where investment should be prioritized.

So something like this would be beneficial to everyone involved. But I take exception to that "ESPECIALLY minorities" crap.

briggs I agree with hardcore, you make a lot of assumptions. I am a minority, my father worked and my mother stayed home. I didn't turn out bad, did well in school, played sports and got a college degree, a good job and family of my own..

I work, my wife used to teach and now she is home with my infant daughter, my son 13 year old is in school where he participates in band and is on the basketball team, he doesn't need 6 days of school..

And guess what, there are a lot of minorities in my area where just one parent works and the kids get a great education. I think you are looking at econimics, minorities in depraved areas, in that case minorities are not the only ones at risk...

I don't see where you are headed with your points....

If people don't believe all kids, especially minorities couldn't benefit greatly from 14 hrs of more school a week, they should put down the racial shot guns and listen to the message. IF YOU GO TO SCHOOL FOR 14 HOURS MORE A WEEK, you ARE GOING TO BENEFIT----- EVERYONE BENEFITS ALL POPULATIONS ALL CREEDS COLORS ETC

A great deal of minorities simply dont have the advantages that kids of upper and middle class have when it comes to education, and that CAN be OFFSET by STAYING IN SCHOOL longer. It's MORE LIKELY that minority PARENTS have to work TWO jobs, thats just reality--and the extra school time is beneficial in terms of additional discipline--im not talking about a spanking here, im talking about giving kids a better FOUNDATION through more education. If you have a problem with that, if you think thats some kind of racial bias sht, get your head out of your arse. 14 more school hours benefits white, green, yellow black, purple rich ESPECIALLY poor and poor CAN be ANY color or CREED--ask me Im a poor Jewish boy from Minna Street Brooklyn NY who watched his Dad die at 8 years old. No one gave me sht, I went to public schools and found great discpline in sports and school work---I was always busy, I had to work hard and I KNOW not everyone does this, but FORCING kids to put more time in WILL HELP A LOT.

Im not trying to get personal about believing kids should go to school for 14 hrs more a week -- you are. I dont know or care who you are for that matter. I believe it would be greatly beneficial, ESPECIALLY for minoritites [of which a high % are poor] to have the ability to STAY in SCHOOL for those additional hours. I didnt have the advantages my kids have--I AM a MINORITY and at 8-9 years old without my Dad, we had to be scrappy and hard-working to make it through. Don't tell me I dont know what being a minority is or who I went to public school with--MAINLY POOR and MINORITY whether it be black, hispanic asian etc... Im sorry, you dont corner the market on race and creed, rather you are absurdly magnifying it and redirecting the original message of EXTRA SCHOOL. I made a direct reference to the context of your post. Poor is everybody, as a class. "Minorities" is generally referred to in the context of race- NOT religion or class.

I'm only interested in talking about what I believe in and what the topic is about[well what it has morphed into],kids staying in school longer to their own benefit. I have had the experience of going to public schools in Brooklyn in the 70s and I have seen my kids go to school in the Darien school system now. Well, they are night and day in terms of the resources the schools can use to enhance educating, yet that being said, if you have books, a table, a teacher and a willingness to do the work--thats all you need. I believe kids need more time in school, and as a kid growing up as a minority with many other minorities, yes I absolutely, without question feel it would help that group the most. I feel it would benefit so many people,but mainly, the kids themselves.. Fourteen extra hours a week of school time is going to benefit kids and it dOES NOT matter where that school is. I want the US Government to mandate it and pay for it, instead of throwing around dumb money. Getting kids to stay in school, to work harder in school, to be HELD accountable in their work will provide a better foundation for the kids as they get older and for the US as a whole.

Ok, I think Briggs made a mistake in words which was wrong, but not all that hateful. Hardcore, I can understand you being offended. Really.

Its wrong to confuse minority with the socio-economic problems that exist. Its important that New Yorkers understand that there are far greater white trailer redneck trash who are also quite challenged and could also benefit from 14 hours of more school and stable family environments. That these problems are not just in urban sterotype struggling black community.

I think New Yorkers for all their sophistication don't see the country quite right. In one instince they see the most underpriviliged and socio-economically challanged group as the "black ghetto community". While that sterotype is wrong, its mostly based on the only on hand experience a New Yorker can get. That group being of minority population, I can see WRONGLY lopping the two together.

Regarding the chinese, we are their biggest customer, and like Japan in the 1980's, they are buying our debt. In a way, it puts the money back in the country. If we stopped buying from them, what would that do to their cashflow? They dump their bonds, and every body loses.

The communists are the government. They are still trying to control the interenet but that is a losing battle. The greatest threat to the communist party is the truth. Trying to be both the state religion, control the capitalistic economy and the free market urges is a very tall task.

We might just have to throw Tawain under the bus. I really don't thing we want to have a major war over this. You tihnk IM going to send my son to fight China? Is China going to illegally take assests away from citizens? Or is genecide threaten the population? As a citizen of the world I could give my son to save 1,000 lives and he may agree with that, but not to protect private enterprise. Its wrong to invate and cease assets, but not worth dying over. I know I would serve if I could protect the lives of thousands of children and innocent. Now is intels new chip plant in Tawain in danger of being ceased? ANd if so, we send our troups? PHuch no!

China has a logical argument over "Formosa". Not that I agree with it, but to what extent do we defend it?

on the money nalod. I don't think briggs was being hateful, I think he did use the wrong choice of words, that is why I said in my post that is has a lot more to do with economics, and why I asked him, what point was he trying to achieve?

And I have not walked in Hardcores shoes either. But I get the gest of his remarks and it was good he bought it up. As was Briggs comments also.

I know for one I thought about a thing or two this morning. Nothing wrong with that!

This on an empty stomach cuz our favorite Chinese take out just sucked last nite! Gods honest truth! Maybe Briggy had a bad meal and went off! Too much Monosodiam Gludimate? Get it? M-S-G!

It's to bad because you know the huge majority of Chinese people are very friendly and would never even consider any sort of action like that. The reality of the world is not dictated by the people, but rather just a few men who control the military.

yea, both hardcore and I are minorities of the same race, but again I can see how and why he is upset, and I also feel that briggs meant no harm. I know I may get accused of playing the middle of the road here, but I can see what hardcore is saying, but on the other hand, I don't think briggs would roll like that... No harm intended I am sure...

In one instince they see the most underpriviliged and socio-economically challanged group as the "black ghetto community". While that sterotype is wrong, its mostly based on the only on hand experience a New Yorker can get. That group being of minority population, I can see WRONGLY lopping the two together.

Regarding the chinese, we are their biggest customer, and like Japan in the 1980's, they are buying our debt. In a way, it puts the money back in the country. If we stopped buying from them, what would that do to their cashflow? They dump their bonds, and every body loses.

The communists are the government. They are still trying to control the interenet but that is a losing battle. The greatest threat to the communist party is the truth. Trying to be both the state religion, control the capitalistic economy and the free market urges is a very tall task.

We might just have to throw Tawain under the bus. I really don't thing we want to have a major war over this. You tihnk IM going to send my son to fight China? Is China going to illegally take assests away from citizens? Or is genecide threaten the population? As a citizen of the world I could give my son to save 1,000 lives and he may agree with that, but not to protect private enterprise. Its wrong to invate and cease assets, but not worth dying over. I know I would serve if I could protect the lives of thousands of children and innocent. Now is intels new chip plant in Tawain in danger of being ceased? ANd if so, we send our troups? PHuch no!

China has a logical argument over "Formosa". Not that I agree with it, but to what extent do we defend it?

It's to bad because you know the huge majority of Chinese people are very friendly and would never even consider any sort of action like that. The reality of the world is not dictated by the people, but rather just a few men who control the military.

Im not stereotyping anything. You have to understand what communism is and what it means. The *Chinese people* 99.9999999999999%
have NO say in what their government does. But the CHINESE COMMUNIST government is BY FAR, and second place isnt of this Earth, the BIGGEST threat to the United Sates of America, and it's growing like a snowball rolling downhill--we can stop them from becoming the new world superpower, but we can re-focus our efforts--for example like I outlined way above. If we continue to think that men driving beat up Honda's with TNT are our biggest enemy, if we continue to spend money we dont have--if we neglect our own people states borders and throw all of our money at fighting third world countries--then we are inevitably DOOMED. There is a big difference between Chinese people and the Communist Chinese government--thats not stereotyping--thats as real as it gets.

Im preaching here that we need to re-focus our entire country in many aspects and we need to get away from war mongering NOW.

The war on enemies ground never worked in history. Nobody never ever won it. We lost in Vietnam, in Korea, and we will lose in Iraq.
The Iraq war for US is carbon copy of Afgan was for Soviet Union.
All driven by ideology, ambitions of the leaders, and money.
For Soviet Union it cost 33000 lives and 500000 handicapped soldiers. And it leads this superpower to the end. It also killed 1000000+ Afgan people and created Ben Laden and started Jihad with the help of US.
I hope this war will not broke us like did with Soviet Union but it is shame now and pain in the future.
Russia was trying for 10 years using 1 million more soldiers and end up with nothing but shame.
Are we going to be so stupid to ignore our own mistakes (Vietnam) and others (Afghanistan)?
