Nobody considered the Suns conference finals material either this year, and I don't think that people were too high on the Nets when they first got Kidd. We'll see how Nash does this year without Q and without JJ - steph had Amare and Marion, and all though a lot of people talk about Amare's breakout year being this year, I wonder if Nash was in phoenix two years ago if Amare would have had that kind of year then - I know Steph has the potential to be up there and he is defeinitely a top 5 point guard, but it isn't like he has had TERRIBLE teams - I think Jason Kidd or even steve nash would have won more with the teams that Marbury had, but that's all just speculation/

I've had this discussion on a different forum and i've had to break down Steph's career and the teams he's been on. Suffice it to say that when he's had a decent team he's made the playoffs. Yet still his best teams have been unfortunately teams with very young players just starting out and not yet ready to contend.

Steph's rookie yr, 1st yr with Minny - 1996-97 He had KG & Gugliotta.
their record 40-42 made playoffs for 1st time in history, the year before Steph they were 26-56. They were Swept by the Rockets.

Steph's 2nd yr in Minny - they went 45-37 lost again in the 1st rd. in 5 games to Seattle.

Was this somehow a bad showing by Steph? I would think that this was a great job by a very young Steph and young KG. This team was a few years from being ready to contend.

You said Steph's teams weren't horrible, well his Nets teams were. His 1st year with NJ, was the lockout shortened year and he came to the team on Mar. 11th and he played 31 games for NJ. So we can't count that year for much. The only player to play all 50 games was Kendal Gill. jayson Williams, Seikaly all missed 20 or more games.

His 2nd yr. 99-00 they went 31-51 Steph went down with a Knee injury the 1st week in April. He played in only 74 games and the team was officially eliminated from playoff contention on Apr. 7th.

His 3rd year 00-01 he only played 67 games and Kittles, Van Horn & Feick, didn't start the season with the team. they went 26-56. KMart had a good rookie season. Still this team was also snake bit from the start.

His 1st yr in PHX 01-02 they went 36-46. Penny came back from playing only 4 gs the yr before as did Gugliottta after major Knee reconstruction. Jake Voskuhl was the Center along with Marion. This was not a very good team. Scott Skiles resigned and Frank Johnson was named coach.

His 2nd yr 02-03 they went 46-36 and were the Eighth seed against the Spurs. They lost in 6 games. Amare had a good Rookie season, but they weren't ready to beat the eventual champion Spurs.

Basically there really isn't a time when I feel that Steph did a bad job with a team that should have been a contender. He hasn't been on a team you could consider a serious title contender. He's gone before the teams fully mature to that point. maybe this time we can keep the group together and see what happens.

Barkley is given too much credit. I don't know why people are so into what he has to say. Just because he's controversial. He's horrible on TV, so disrespectful of the other hosts and he steps on their lines all the time. Its painful trying to watch Ernie do his part and have Charles just interrupt every single time.

AS far as the Knicks comments. I think LB is what he is. I don't see how that has any bearing on the job he'll do for the Knicks. He WINS and that's the bottom line.

Steph is always in the conversation of best PG in the league and if he feels he's the best more power to him. Why shouldn't he feel that way. Did Ali not express the same thing all the time. Most players may feel the same way but just haven't said it to a reporter. Mind you he's been egged on by the media to say that Kidd is better for years now and he finally got fed up with it. Face it the Media just hates Steph and anyone can see it, including Steph. He's only human and eventually a man gets tired of all the crap.

excellent post, and I agree, marbury is hated by the media and really I don't know why? I have an idea, but I will save that for another day. Barkley said a lot of stupid things in his career, to get on steph for that solicited comment is ridiculous. As far as Brown, he has earned the wright to be a little spoiled, he is probably the best teacher in the game, I am happy to have him in NY!!

barkley is a jackass.
he was never as good as ewing.
he's always had beef with the knicks organization and knocks them on every little thing.

it's larry f'n brown. what? there's no problem flying all over the place to BEG phil jackson to come back?

at the end of the day, all top talent, either coaching or actual players need to be catered to or "BEG" as charles would say. that's how you get talent to come to your team.

i don't get how ANYBODY can say ANYTHING negative about bringing in a larry brown. STUPID STUPID STUPID.

as for steph, when you say "i'm the best" DESPITE THE CONTEXT, it opens you up to all the criticism. but one thing you can say about steph, he is STRONG. he gets it in almost every single article about how he is not a leader, he's selfish, etc., but he never really complains about it - he pretty much stays quiet and goes about his business (whether it's true or not).

btw, the tnt crew is just bad. ej, kenny, and charles really offer nothing but comic relief. and then when they bring in magic, we all need some closed captioning b/c nobody knows what anybody's saying. kenny tries to make some points and tries to be the intellectual of the group but it doesn't work. barkley is all shtick.

bonn said it right, barkley talks like he won titles.

I just don't think its as bad as people think. He really does get hammered with that whole Kidd is better than you stuff and its not fair that we should just think he won't ever respond and give his opinion, instead of some creampuff answer we know he doesn't mean.

The thing is I hate when people quote what he said cuz its not really exactly what he said and it makes it sound worse than it was at the time he actually said it. Here are the actual quotes of what he said during that time on two differnet occasions:

Marbury: "I Already Know I'm The Best Point Guard."
1st January, 2005 - 7:38 pm
Newark Star Ledger - Stephon Marbury scored 30 points for the 3rd consecutive games on Saturday night, but the Nets were the better team, winning 93-87.

Marbury had 31 points and 8 assists, to Jason Kidd's 13 points and 3 assists.

"Don't get me wrong -- I love Jason Kidd, he's a great point guard," Marbury said Friday. "(But) how am I comparing myself to him when I think I'm the best point guard to play basketball?"

He refused to back off that sentiment yesterday.

"To me, I already know I'm the best point guard," he said. "So if someone asked me, it's just like asking someone, "Is it raining outside?" when it's raining. If it's raining outside you're going to tell them it's raining."

Its clear that the press KEEPS on asking him about this evey dang time he plays the Nets and he finally just got tired of it. I happen to think that the degree of effectiveness they both have on a team isn't as far apart as some think. Its just my opinion and I don't think it matters much, cuz until this team can win games, no one will give Steph any credit. I have hope that this year will be the beginning of a new era for him and finally getting the respect he deserves.

God forbid Charles Barkley to have an opinion that goes against anything anyone says good about the Knicks. If he said he believes the Knicks will win the Finals then you lovehim to death. But guess what, anyone with a human brain will talk bad about him as if he just shot the President.

Either way, someone will have something bad to say. Someone will have something good to say. So the best thing to do in a situation like this--speak your mind.

The guy spoke his mind.

Ask Detroit if they have anything negative to say about Larry Brown.

The guy faked sickness to not honor his contract. Not only that, he wasn't man enough to leave and take the Knicks job. He wanted to get fired to bilk them out of more money.

God forbid anyone has anyhting negative to say about Larry Brown.

Charles Barkley is the devil and Larry Brown is an angel. Okay, i got it now

Well you obviously know what REALLY went on with Larry Brown. NOT!!!!!!!!!

Charles is hit or miss and I think he missed on this one. We got LB so screw what he thinks. He also thought Houston was going to the finals after 2 good games against Dallas.

He's had his foot in his mouth so much, he gargles with Lotrimin foot cream. Barkley doesn't really matter to me, but I do get tired of his act.

Brown was a great pickup and I don't care if he had to use some crazy tactics to get out of Detroit. We have him now and all I care about is what he does for this team. I happen to think he can help this team a lot even in his 1st yr.
