the Hawks overpaid because they had to do *something* and JJ isnt Lebron or a guy you build a team around.

I think Pho is accepting the reality that the best they can do is surround Nash/Marion/Amare with solid role players. Thats not too shabby a core to do that with.

What team has a better trio of players? Duncan/Manu/Parker is the only one IMO

He'll play PG for them. Too bad the Hawks dropped the ball on Dalembert/Chandler/Curry, they could have had a very nice team.

They still have 10+ Million left in cap space. They could easily push for Chandler or Curry. Chicago doesn't really have the money to sign both, so I think, depending on how much Atlanta is willing to pay, that Paxson is only keeping 1...

They are over the cap, they do nOT have 10mm in cap space.

Man that is seriously overpaying. Joe Johnson is a good player, he's a borderline all-star. I didn't know players like that could get max contracts nowadays. I'm actually quite surprised that Joe Johnson wants to get away from playing with Steve Nash because Steve Nash should probably be getting paid a portion of JJs contract for his prescence alone. Alot like how Jason Kidd has gotten KMart and RJ huge paydays. I guess Atlanta needs to do this though so they can attract other talent, so they have to start somewhere.

Atlanta is starting to look good and of course this comes on the heals of me ripping the franchise and how bad I felt for its fans all offseason prior to the draft haha. Great timing on my part.

Atlanta's biggest mistake was drafting Marvin WIlliams instead of trading one spot down to get Chris Paul. If they drafted Chris Paul, they wouldn't be paying max money for a combo guard who can play the 1, and making him the starting pg. Its a bad idea imo.

they could have thrown that money at a chandler or dalembert and had a much more balanced young team, with Chris Paul as a bonafide star for them, AND someone who will make their other guys better.

Are they serious about making JJ the Point Guard? Wow that is ridiculous, I mean I know he played some PG in Phoenix in relief of Nash but that was short stretches, that is REALLY risky on Atlantas part.

You do realize I'm talking about Atlanta right...
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

This ESPN report states that if the trade goes through the picks would be lottery protected:

Not too bad. I wouldn't give max money to Joe Johnson. He got alot of open looks from Steve Nash. I doubt the guy can play point.

^ I was about to say. They BETTER be lottery protected, b/c JJ could have simply made life miserable for Suns management if they were leaning toward matching. NO reason for the Hawks to splurge like that.

Good to see the Hawks aren't a bunch of saps...

If they can sign Curry or Chandler with their remaining cap space, I'd say that's a very nice offseason for them...

I was hoping that Suns resign JJ for the max thus will have no choice but to move Marion in order to resign Amare.

If this report of JJ's S&T with ATL is true, Marion to NY (for TT's contract) was a short lived dream.

The Hawks are under the cap, aren't they?
good point, there ya go

Yes but Phoenix is signing JJ to a max deal and then trading him to Atlanta for Diaw who makes nowhere near Max Money.. I don't understand how this works under the CBA.

as long as the hawks are under the cap and can fit his deal in that cap, then they are fine. Atlanta was far enough under the cap to sign him outright, so eventhough even salaries are not being exchanged as long as the team taking back the larger salary has the cap room, the trade is OK. The only time dollar for dollar trades have to be done are when both teams are over the cap...

Diaw + 2 future 1st rounders for JJ
per espnews

just what the Hawks need, another swing man.

He'll play PG for them. Too bad the Hawks dropped the ball on Dalembert/Chandler/Curry, they could have had a very nice team.
If he has to play Pg for the hawks all year then the hawks are worse off than I thought.. JJ can run a little point, but he is no where near a fulltime or PT PG.. spot duty at pg is fine for him..

well they are adding
Raja Bell
Kurt Thomas
Boris Diaw
Dijon Thompson
Lucas Tisher
and from what i hear they are in with Mike Finley
and they get two first round picks fom Atl

out the door with
Voshkul
Q
JJ

don't forget they gave up nate robinson along with Q... if you count dijon then you have to count nate

in any case, what was JJ thinking...

that's a good point. and the nate robinson pick was aquired from the Bulls straight up for #7 2004 pick which the the Bulls used on Deng.

So really:

Q
JJ
Deng

And, they haven't added Finley yet.

i agree with Nalod,

JJ is a talent but c'mon

I agree, the Hawks overpaid, but believe me I live here and that is the only way the hawks could get primo FA's. Kenyon martin was offered max money from the Hawks, he even refused to come to Atlanta and get all the Freebies before he turned them down. Dalmebert was told that the Hawks would give him big money, and he didn't even bother getting on the plane. The hawks have to overpay, no one wants to come and play in the Phillips arena funeral home... Beautiful stadium, dead atmosphere..

I still think they have the best players in the league at the C and PG positions--that alone will make them great.

Sorry Briggs, Phoenix would like to move Amare back to the 4 and Matrix back to 3. So if you still consider Kurt the best center in the laegue then you're statement still stands i suppose

4 5 5 4 whatever he is, hes the best frontcourt player in the league, i wouldnt trade him for anyone. He showed it in last years playoff's a true coming out party, hes the best frontcourt player in basketball and Nash is the best PG

But from everything i read, they like amare at 5, unless you can show me something different.

The Suns have done a number of bad things in my opinion. First, they traded their first round pick to Chicago who ended up taking Deng. Then, they do the Richardson trade to give them more financial flexibility to resign Joe Johnson and because it gave them a player in Kurt Thomas who gives them a better shot at winning now. Well, then they lose Joe Johnson, the player they were trying to keep, for 2 lottery protected first round picks and freaking Boris Diaw.

Please, I know Marion, Amare, and Nash are good, but, they won't be winning any championships anytime soon. That Richardson trade looks even worse for them right now in my opinion.

The Suns are smart to get something for Joe instead of letting the Hawks sign him for the max. However, they made some terrible moves in my opinion.

Well... you'd think they'd try to get Josh Smith or Josh Childress instead of Diaw. (maybe they did, but at this point, they're on the verge of losing him for nothing)

The Hawks are putting together a team of long athletes at every position... it'll be interesting to see how it works out, especially considering 4 projected starters are really natural SFs (meaning 3 of them are technically playing out of position)...

They'd probably benefit from a true PG, though. Maybe they'll trade for a veteran like Eric Snow.
