Starks definitely used to play some sick D on MJ, even though it never really seemed to matter. But Starks would play the best defense humanly possible and Mj would swish it. But Starks would play beyond his capabilities sometimes and just be unconscious.

Not sure if any of you remember, but Juwaun Howard was making close to 25 Million a few years back one season.

Honestly, all of you can talk about Marbury's massive contract, but for the life of me, I'll NEVER understand how the Bullets gave Howard that much money. I mean, you have to be REALLY stupid to do that. I'm talkin hybrid of Bab-dick and Lame-den stupid.

DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

hard to say Starks was better than H20. I dont remember John shutting anyone down. He played as hard as anyone I have ever seen and I adored him, but was he better? Did he win us more games? Would Houston have shot 1-17?

I think you can argue either way, its certainly close.

If you think Houston was just a jump shooter you havent watched any classic Knick games lately. He dunked, he penetrated, he pulled up, he bombed away. Great mid range game.. obviously his best weapon was the jumper but certainly not his only weapon.

I would say Starks did more on both sides of the ball but he wasnt the offensive threat Houston was. Too streaky and less reliable. Great player though... loved John. Maybe Nate is the next guy to play with that fire

you are right, houston used to penetrate and do a lot more, but that all seemed to cease a yr or 2 after making the finals, he become more of a spot-up shooter.

a guy that had been healthy his whole career started breaking down. Its not an excuse, just what happened. We overpaid him, not even a debate. But we gave him that contract when we were a perenial playoff team and he was a major cog.

Remember Spree also got a max deal which just expired. We paid ALL those guys. The problem was Ewing/LJ/Camby quickly became Harrington/Spoon/Kurt and thats problems 1,2 and 3.

Actaully it was a year right after he signed his contract. Check the tapes if you dont believe me. Not that he did much but he even stopped running without the ball as much as he used to. Thats not makes it the worst contract.

What makes it the worst contract is deciding to make a jump shooter your franchise player. Its was a bad idea. If they paid him, and paid him handsomely (50-60 million over 6) they could've added better players (ie: low post) around him. Not only would that be the right way to use Houston's shooting the right way, that would also give the team more chances to win games.

Brian Grant and his contract was absurd THEN as well as absurd NOW.
What in the world was Miami thinking when they signed Grant to all that money. The guy is a ROLE PLAYER

thats a bad list, unless your looking at it in hindsight, and if you are its still not fair. Houston was an all star, a productive and a clutch player. Everyone knows he was overpaid but its one thing to be overpaid, another to be the worst signing in sports.

Same thing with Penny, who along with Kidd were poised to be the best backcourt possibly ever. Its neither the Suns or Penny's fault he got hurt, it just happened that way.

Where is Grant Hill on that list? The Magic have payed him $70mm to play a 114 games, during which they made the playoffs once.

Where is Jim McIllvaine? The Knicks paid Chris Dudley $8mm to play 14 minutes a night as a backup!

I still dont get the blame on Houston. He was a good player for us and a key cog for winning teams. We turn Camby, LJ and Ewing into Harrington, Spoon and Kurt Thomas and people point to Houston as the reason our team went to crap. Add to the fact that Layden and Isiah have both done everything in their power to ensure Houston's contract would have no bearing on our cap by loading the roster with equally overpaid players.

You're right. This is a really bad list. I also like how they snuck in 11 as if Rose and Croshere were the same signing.

Anyway, we know the list is inaccurate because it ONLY has four current/former knicks... and most times when there's a list like this, we have at least six. :p
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Hell, in the 95-96 season Houston was doing everything right. He was scoring at will. He would shoot over people, fade away, take guys off the dribble, and yes dunk as Fish said. I remember Doug Collins and Grant Hill saying finally Allan is playing like everyone thought he could play. He was amazing during the playoffs for the Pistons that year. But wait it was contract year, he got all the love from the Knicks not enough from Detroit. During Houston first year with the Knicks he acted like he was some mistreated stepchild. Anyone remember the problems he had when he played the Pistons especially in Detroit. Starks and Ewing yelling at him to shoot the ball, take it to the whole. Was getting booed which led Ewing to step up for him and people just started booing him instead. Everyone talks about Miami 99 Game 5 but no one mentions Miami 97 game 7 where he had a bad nite. I guess like how some Knick fans are disappointed in Steph for underacheiving, I am the same way with Houston.
