I'm sorry but I have to speak up for the "older generation."

Red Auerbach was IMO far and away superior to anything that's come since, even though there are a lot of great coaches on this list. There was just never a question with this guy, he took on some of the greatest teams ever and greatest players ever and found a way to beat them every year. He also knew that the regular sesaon was only to get your team into the playoffs and that that was when the season counted. He got guys on the team to both fear and love him, and they believed in him 100%. And man was he tough, ****y, combative, in your face. Whew.
