Abdur-Rahim Agrees To Join Nets, Either Via MLE Or Sign-And-Trade
18th July, 2005 - 9:01 pm
ESPN - A team source said the Nets are very close to an agreement with Shareef Abdur-Rahim on a six year contract worth roughly $38 million.

To make the deal work under cap rules, the Portland Trail Blazers , who own Abdur-Rahim's rights, would have to agree to sign him to the contract and then trade him to the Nets using a $5 million trade exception that the Nets own. In return, the Nets would send a future first round pick to the Blazers.

If the Nets are unable to get the Blazers to agree to a sign-and-trade, Abdur-Rahim has agreed to sign with the Nets for their mid-level exception at five years for about $28 million, according to the team source. So, either way, it looks like the Nets will get their hands on Abdur-Rahim. [READ]

I stand corrected. And on that note, I'm going to sleep.

PS...he wanted to sign with Frank, nothing to do with the money, he was going to the nets no matter what.

Guys I don't like the James signing either, but do you really think Swift would have chosen us over the Rockets? I mean, weren't we the first team to meet with Stromile? I think Isiah tried to get him but realized he couldn't when the Rockets entered the picture so he went with another player on his list in James.

"This is a very cautious situation that we're in. You have to be conservative in terms of using your assets and using them wisely. We're building for the future." - Zeke (I guess not protecting a first round pick is being conservative)

Were we trying to get another PF?

Why must we assume we can be in on all deals.

We really needed JJ, and while that might suck, its reality.

This team ain't about JJ, and it aint about Marbury.

Its about the future, and in the future, we don't know who the go to guy will be. maybe its Reezy, maybe its A player we have yet to draft.

I just hope this dude whom ever he is was born already.

IM getting old. this **** like Redsox old!

A star PF???????

We gave full MLE to a scrub center.

The nets gave full MLE to a star PF.

Now, if you can't see that we overpaid, then whatever.

I would say Shareef Abdur Rahim qualifies as a start player.

I would like to see what this trade/signing is really all about, because MLE-type dollars is very cheap for SAR. I think he really must want out of Portland bad.

What doesn't make sense about the report is that SAR will either go to New Jersey in a sign-and-trade or as a free agent for about the same amount of money if the Blazers don't want to give him up for next to nothing.

My question is, why would the Nets attempt to sign and trade at all when they can land SAR for the same money and lose nothing?

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

All I can say is this, lets see how both teams do during the season. I still see our Knicks doing much better than the Nets...

that's not why some of us are upset w/the JJ signing dude...the fact that Swift would have or wouldn't have come here isn't the issue...the issue is that Isiah signed a LLE player to an unnecessary MLE contract...the fact that people here are actually happy w/it is what boggles my mind.

the more he makes moves like this, the longer this team will be mired in the same problems that are keeping this franchise from ever having a realistic shot at any quality free agents in the future...you have to break the ridiculous cycle at SOME point...our goal should have been to get under the cap in 2008 right from the getgo...this team isn't going to win a championship in the next 3 years regardless of what moves Isiah makes w/the current assets they possess...why he insists on adding on marginal talent for longterm contracts is what i for the life of me can't understand.

if we were talking about a bargain price for a better player like a Swift or Rahim, then fine, i can see the point...signing stiffs like Jerome James is a band aid maneuver to try & cover up some of the glaring weaknesses this roster currently has, but longterm it does nothing to increase our chances of winning a title.

EVERY move Isiah makes should have that 1 goal in mind in my opinion...that's what he was brought in here for...some of you seem to have lost touch w/that concept & are more concerned about fielding a team that's barely competitive every year...personally i'm sick & tired of the also ran teams we run out there every year...i want to get the feeling that we're building towards a championship...i just don't get that feeling w/the moves Isiah's making...i'm sorry.
