VDesai is dead on. The McIlvaine comparison comes in when you compare their relative talents with respect to contract figures. Hunter for full MLE would indeed be terrible, probably somewhere between McIlvaine and Foyle on the disaster scale. If I were to give this guy a contract, I wouldn't start off with $3M-- I would make sure the MOST he ever got annually at any part of his contract was $3M. That translates to something more like a $1.5 - 2M salary for year one, or a flat contract with $3M every year. Otherwise, no thanks.

And don't be so confident another team would just jump in and take him off our hands if we so desired. I don't see anyone chomping at the bit for Foyle or Brian Grant (or McIlvaine in his time)-- even big men can be so overpaid as to have virtually no trade value. Consider that, as V pointed out, Hunter has hardly improved his stats at all since being a throwaway earlier in his career, and also that just about any player is bound to look better playing on last year's Phoenix team than on most other NBA squads. I would take him if he came cheap, but if he wants to drive a hard bargain, let him go somewhere else.

I sure hope Hunter is not like Jim McIlvaine. McIlvaine was a joke. The guy would come into a game and block a shot and then sit down.

Yes, I've seen it suggested here and elsewhere.

Someone will probably overpay for Hunter. I hope it's not the Knicks.

The reason to sign Hunter is to continue to develop a roster that plays a certain style of ball. Hunter is a big man who can run, rebound and block shots. No one is saying he's a starter, but he is a quality big who can give us 15-20 minutes a night at center. I love how people are saying Jackie Butler can play that role, despite never having actually seen the kid play meaningful minutes. We've all seen Hunter play Tim Duncan pretty damn well in the Western Conf Finals. Capable backup centers who have the potential to be starters don't fall off trees and they aren't cheap. This guy is an unrestricted free agent, he's one of the few bigs we can get. This shouldn't be complicated.

LOL! I don't bookmark threads to bring them back after the strange reaction of a few posters here to the briggs thread. I just bookmark them because I enjoy looking at people's opinions in old threads if the threads were really interesting. I don't know why that fascinates a couple of people here so much

I for once did not see Hunter play Duncan well, or play well at all for that matter in the finals. You are just makin up things here, when did Hunter ever play consistent 20 mins a game?

If you are going to make stuff up about a player, then you can make Foyle sound like Shaq and conintue to be delusional.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

Anything more then the LLE is absurd.

This guy played on a team WITHOUT A CENTER and he could not get the starting job, or even earn significant minutes on a regular basis, let alone put up good numbers other then blocked shots.

He couldn't beat out Amare and that means what?

D'Antoni put the five on the floor he did because he wanted to play a motion, running game, and he put his five best offensive players on the floor.

We're just looking for someone to come in and at least occasionally intimidate the other team.

We know he's not wilt, but better Hunter for $10m 3 years than Kwame at whatever he's going to get.

Role player- nothing more.
