k, say they dump Marion for an expiring. Now they have Nash at $12.3M, and say JJ and Amare are both making about $13M at that time as well. That adds up to about $38M for 3 players. You need 14 on the roster, per the new CBA. Say those 14 make an average of $1M each... that's $52M, right around the cap. Not much flexibility there.

oops, duh, meant to say 11, not 14. So Nash+Amare+JJ ~= $38M, plus 11 other players making an average of $1M, adds up to $49M. A bit under the cap, but not any more than the MLE. Not too impressed. You simply can't have 3 guys making max money and have roster flexibility, let alone 4 (if they keep Marion).

Isn't the cap likely to go up?
yeah, but he's using an extremely conservative estimate of how much each player other than their core guys will be paid.

The Suns are a well run team. As long as they are in strking distance of cap room, they will find a way to gain flexibility.

Get back to me in October. There are several teams with cap room that might be interested in JJ, and to have a serious chance they'll have to offer him the max. The Suns' hands are tied, though. They HAVE to match any offer for JJ, or else they have to answer to their fans why they just broke up their title contending team. Amare, Marion, and Nash isn't enough to beat the Spurs.

I think JJ will get about 9 million-10million to start, but he'll sign a deal that's worht almost $70 million. Either way, it's a lot of cash.

the bottom line is any GM will look like a genius when he has young, inexpensive talent. that talent always gets expensive quick. the true test is whether the GM can keep the pipeline full of fresh talent and make smart decisions about who to pay and who not to.

Now, I like Joe Johnson a lot, but I don't know if he's the best guy to give a near max deal. We'll see if it comes back to hurt Phoenix. They also have a very old MVP signed to a long term contract which can hurt too.

But Phoenix has continually added talent through the years, look at some of the guys who have gone through there, they have a great front office. They should be fine.
