Begley may have assumed on Payne's (PT) based on his T-Jones comments but him coming back and saying Kolek is the Brunson back-up (#2 PG) is obviously coming from a source and I find it interesting. I would have assumed Payne gets the nod but at the same time the one thing most of us agreed on was that we need another ball handler to break down the D and get into the paint. Kolek obviously does those 2 things well and Begley re-clarifying this quickly is an obvious indication Knicks want this made clear.

Really if you think us having solid shooters like Deuce, Donte, OG, Mikel - etc. someone like Kolek could have a field day feeding and creating. The other thing I was thinking is if Mitch was in fact moved to bench (post a center trade) - Kolek could open up the lob game for him in ways Brunson may not.

I still like the Payne addition and his scoring / shooting but this Begley stuff really seems to indicate Knicks heavily invested in a true PG off bench.

The backup PG mins will essentially be deuce and Donte. Payne and kolek only come into play if someone is hurt. Thibs isn’t going to 10 guys in the rotation. He may barely go to 9 given hart and Donte will both get 30 mins each.

Except Deuce/Donte aren't point guards - they weren't last year and they aren't this year.

Prior to I-Hart leaving the #1 need was a ball handling guard to break down and create --- neither Deuce/Donte fit that role or have that skillset

I'm sick of Begley creating news with his opinions. He says he thinks something, says no one said anything to him from the Knicks, and people talk about it like Leon Rose or Thibs said it. He's going to say some dumb opinion in two days, and it will be a news story, as if it's real.

that is not his fault. Why can't he have an opinion? As long as he clearly state that it is an opinion I have no problem with it. The problem is the news aggregators that label his opinions as if they are reports.

Thanks for the question, Jay. I’d like to start here with my answer: in our video Mailbag earlier this week, I took a question from @EvanWecksell (4:51 mark) about Cam Payne. I said I thought Payne would get significant minutes next season. Turns out that, based on current rotation projections, I was wrong. Before we get to that, I just want to touch on my answer in the Mailbag. I thought Payne would get rotation minutes off the Knick bench because I knew they had interest in Tyus Jones. Jones would obviously get significant minutes with the Knicks if he’d signed here. So I assumed that the Knicks had a similar plan for Payne. That assumption was wrong.

This is where things stand with the projected rotation coming out of Summer League: Rookie Tyler Kolek is currently the backup point guard, ahead of Payne, per people familiar with the matter. The Knicks were thrilled to get Payne last week. (He signed for a veteran’s minimum deal.) At the moment, he is viewed as the third lead guard behind Kolek, who had a very strong Summer League.

Will Kolek be in Tom Thibodeau’s rotation? I don’t know the answer to that question. You can certainly pencil in Donte DiVincenzo, Josh Hart and the Knicks’ yet-to-be-named backup center into Thibodeau’s rotation. Based on current projections after the Payne signing, Miles McBride is in the Knicks’ regular rotation. So to play Kolek, Thibodeau would need to expand his rotation to 10 players.

To be clear: the above is based on where things stand coming out of Summer League. This can obviously change based on player performance during training camp/preseason.

On the backup center spot, the Knicks have remained in regular contact with free agent Precious Achiuwa. Achiuwa has drawn interest from opposing teams, including some contenders.

If things can obviously change, why are you making a guess about something so trivial and without any real basis NOW? It's frivolous.

It's embarrassing that people treat Begley like he's Leon Rose or Tom Thibodeau. On boards, on social media, in videos. Dude has an opinion, and people treat it like the Knicks told them personally who the second or third PG is going to be. Thibs hasn't even COACHED Payne or Kolek, and people are making video essays about Kolek being second string and not third.

Begley is probably the most plugged in guy around the Knicks. I think it's fair to assume that Knicks brass has an opinion on who is going to be where in the rotation when training camp starts. That can obviously change, but they signed Kolek to a 4 year deal and he shined in SL and it's not crazy to think it's his job to lose.
