Holfresh everything happens for a reason. What do you think happened that prompted Larry to start acting the way he did? Did he just want Isiah's job? Is it possible that management failed to deliver on its own promises? These guys have mega egos and its not as simple as answering to superiors.

Holfresh, what if I offered you a guarenteed $5mm over 3 years to manage a book for my bank? What if I then said you take positions exceeding $500mm? You can hire your assistants, use your own software, literally build your own shop. I'm paying you more than anyone else in the organization.

Then when you start I tell you I have 2 other traders I want on your desk
Then I tell you I want to keep the positions I have, at least until further notice
Then when you ask for some of the market data feeds your custom to I say no, use our current systems
Then when you ask for an I.T. budget to build systems to do platform trading, risk analysis for structured products etc. I say no, use whats there now.

At what point do you start to rebel, to act out and generally get pissed off because I told you one thing and did another? Is "answer to your superiors" good enough?

Now what if you knew I did the exact same things to the last guys I hired?

See a pattern?

Its all moot now. Isiah is responsible for every guy on the roster so now the real fun begins.

Code...No matter what field you are in, you have to answer to someone...You have to obey orders....I am an FX trader that manages my own book, has to follow orders even though I know more knowledge about the product than my superiors...My Brother is a Dean of a Law School and has to follow orders from the President of that University...My sister runs an emergency room and has to follow orders from her superiors...

Back and forth between us is not neccessary...The idea that Larry can do what he wants because he has more basketball knowledge is at best short sighted...Dolan has a business to run...If his mandate is to make the playoffs so he can fill the coffers at the Garden, it his prerogative. What most of you Larry Brown defender choose to ignore is that he tanked the season to gain an upper hand in the organization...No matter how you slice it Code, that has an effect on the Boss's bottom line...He doesn't get a pat on the back because you or others in your one sided poll think it's "justified" or have "long term benefit" to the organization...Dolan still signs that 10 mil per year check....

My point, that you seems to have taken offense to, is most of you Larry lovers here feel that Isiah will fail with the tast at hand...It almost seems like most of you wish this will happen...Isiah is not a bad coach, so don't bank on his failure being a certainty....Thats my point...Sure, it will be difficult...When you walk into an organization that has the cap issues he met here , with one tradable piece in Kurt Thomas, it's going to be an uphill struggle...

40 wins will be my threshold but more importantly, the development of Frye and Curry and how the play alongside each other will determine success in my eyes...Whether or not these two guys can be a foundation the Knicks organization can build upon...Thats key...A task that Brown didn't feel was important and was called out by Dolan about it midway thru the season.....

Holfresh, I appreciate that you answered my questions. The bottom line remains that Dolan is not a quality owner. His organization is run poorly. LB was our best shot to go against Dolan's orders and that was reason to get excited in my opinion. I will reply in detail later. Again, Isiah can succeed despite the slim odds. No one wishes him to fail - I think, despite the rants of other posters, you know that. But he was responsible for making matters worse and we'll see if he can start fixing this mess this year.

Its all moot now. Isiah is responsible for every guy on the roster so now the real fun begins.

That will be fun but you are nuts if you don't think the real fun will begin here!

"This is the perfect ending for Larry Brown, a pink slip and a notice that he will not get another nickel beyond the $10 million he has already stolen from his hometown team. The Knicks are putting him in David Stern's court, which means they will make Brown fight for the balance of his $50 million deal before the only man in America who appreciates him less than the Garden suits who fired him.

Stern isn't blowing any $40 million goodbye kiss Brown's way, and you can take that to your friendly neighborhood bank. The commissioner is torn on the sore subject of Brown, and the conflict goes like this

He can't remember if he's angrier at the coach for negotiating with the Cavaliers smack in the middle of last year's Pistons-Spurs Finals, or for trashing his Olympic players and selection committee elders during the Summer Games meltdown in Greece.

Payback is a hitch, Larry, a snag in the arbitration process that leaves you to face the wrong judge and jury. Stern will look at Brown and see Mark Cuban times 10." - Ian O'Connor

Fish, until someone speaks up, we will never really know what agreements were in place and who went back on their words...This much we do know, Larry had GM asperations since interviewing for the Cleveland job, while being in Detroit...It is also dificult for me to believe that anyone agreed to wholesale changes a few months into the basketball season...More evidence that Larry was brought here to coach only, was the Dolan's press conference in Memphis? I think, where he said it was Brown job was to develop Curry into a player....

Now I'm sure Brown had list of players and Isiah had a mandate to get him as many players as he can...We both know it's difficult to make trades in this league as two teams needs to agree on exchange of assets...But no scanario you can draw up can make me believe that Brown was justified in tanking the season, which we all believe he did....at domr point we all have to be professionals about how we go about doing our task...This players were not professionals when they quit on Brown...Brown was not a professional when he quit on the team...

I got more for you...I have to hop but will be back with more..

Oh and I want to add a P.S.

If LB ever shows his face in MSG again, whether it be on the sidelines coaching another team or whatever, he should be booed out of the building. That guy is a total bum.

If he respects MJ and stays away from managing the team, I would bet he has them in the playoffs next season. If Larry Brown could make a point guard, I think it would be Raymond Felton. The guy is tough as balls, plays his heart out on both sides of the ball, an incredible onball perimeter defender, breaks down the defense and finish at the rim, rebounds with the best of them, and is 100% pass first. Then you got another defensive stud on the perimeter in Wallace, not to mention Emeka inside.

That team is made for Larry Brown. They will grind it out on the defensive end every night and get into transition because of all the stops and turnovers. He claimed he was going to do this with the Knicks as soon as we started to defend. Add an outside shooter at the 2 and they are a young Pistons squad.

Add another solid player via the draft or draft day trade. I tell you what, the Bobcats are writing a textbook on how to build an expansion team. Now, especially with the addition of MJ, it may be too risky to bring on Brown. The team is young and you don't want too many egos and distractions.

It'll be interesting, but either way I think the Bobcats are going to be tough every time they take the floor next season.

the one difference is that it's all about UNC. those guys are a fraternity and they will have a great support staff for brown b/c that's what he needs. he needs a support staff and with rumors of dean smith joining as a consultant, i think it makes for a strong enough atmosphere to bring in a guy like lb.

and you're right ray, that team is built for a coach like him.

You don't hire D'antoni unless you find some runners, shooters, passers and guys that can play all day long. Doesn't make sense to hire Phil Jackson and then not find guys who fit the triangle offense. Doesn't make too much sense to hire LB and not fit him with team players, a pass-first PG and some workhorse vets who play D. I liked the LB hiring but you don't buy beachfront property in Florida and not expect and protect for hurricanes, right? You plan for those kinds of things and think ahead about it and research the area for what's expected and buy and build accordingly.

It's well documented the LB wants to trade every player he coaches and wants every other player on his team that's not currently there. Does that mean the GM should do so? I think keeping David Robinson, Prince, Chauncy, Iverson, etc. were smart moves buy their GMs. LB likes guys who follow orders and give 110%, right? Guys like Lee and Frye and Bulter and Crawford? And we go and get Jalen who is about out of gas and seems to turn and and off the leadership? Risky. And follow it up with Francis who is pouting on a bad team in Orlando and you think he will turn it around in NY? I liked that trade cause you got value for nothing, but you have to know the repercussions. You don't want LB to talk to other teams about trade (something that is also well documented around the league)? Well you put that in his contract if you don’t want him to do it.

These are not hard things to plan for. I liked the Curry trade too but Isles and BRIGGS were right: we gave too much. Maybe if we are a legit 50 game team for 2 consecutive years and have picks around 20+ and Curry is in shape, that’s a good trade. But even the Spurs protect their picks. Isiah could have added a clause that if our pick this year was top 3 we automatically get their 16th pick or that our pick next year stays ours. That’s planning and shielding yourself, right? That’s a GMs job. I keep thinking to myself that if Curry were coming out of college right now he still would probably be the first pick and trading a first rounder for him was OK and if we had the first overall we would select Curry. That’s what Isiah keeps telling us. But here is what Isiah is not telling us: We could have had Curry and MORE for the trade. We got short-changed. Again.

When you buy a house you check the plumbing and foundation and have the town run a check on the deeds, right? Isiah didn’t do that in either the Curry deal or the LB hiring.

Agreed. Larry Brown values Dean Smith's views and opinions. Dean Smith may be the only guy left in the basketball world who can influence Brown, and he'd be a better coach because of it.

If they bring both Dean and Larry on board, watch out. Every UNC guy would want to play there and it could turn into a very strong relationship between a college and pro team. From a marketing perspective, the Bobcats probably want to bring in as many UNC guys as possible.

Please. Larry took the money from the worse run organization is sports' history. He couldn't have expected anything to work out. The only reason Brownopoly could have possibly taken the job was greed.

So first off, we can all agree Brown did a poor job last year. Some say he sabotaged the team in his vicious plot to swindle master jazz crooner, Jimmy, - I think he was unprepared, indecisive and frustrated with players not playing hard. Regardless, he handled the situation poorly - we can see this in part by the win count and the protests of players and management.

Then there is another dynamic - one that is frequently the primary concern of a rebuilding team. As a coach, you frequently must choose between maximizing the win count and developing young talent. If you argue that Brown failed in the latter then I know you didn't watch the games. Tell me Crawford didn't get better, tell me Nate didn't get better significantly, tell me Frye, Lee, Butler and Woods didn't get better. All of those players got much better. Crawford's defense was better, his chucking was less, his confidence at the end of games was on display. This after 5 years in the league. Butler got better in the post and on defensive rotations. Frye played hard throughout the season and began to shed his soft label, something that, mind you, remained throughout his college career. Nate played under control better on offense and gambled less on defense, to the point where I didn't throw up every time he touched the ball. Woods ran the break well, picked his spots in the half-court, shot 50% and improved his rebounding to career-high levels. Now would you prefer 23 wins and the silver lining above - or 35 wins, 5 mpg for Nate, an undisciplined Crawford, and Frye's minutes limited to 15 mpg to accomodate Taylor and AD. Pick wisely.

Again, regarding job insubordination, it is NOT necessary to follow orders if you are 100% convinced they are wrong. To suggest otherwise is crap. If a patient's life is on the line, you better believe I'm not taking some dope's opinion on what I should do. I'm gonna shut him the fu*k up and save a life. Again Dolan doesn't know jack**** about the development of basketball players. He shouldn't have gotten involved - he got in Brown's jock and, in the process, undermined his authority. The only "power play" Brown made was with the players. And that I support 100%.

Crawford's the only who might have gotten better. The others were good from the beginning. They were simply benched b/c they were young. Frye was rookie of the month in the first month and worsened if anything due to low confidence. Lee was the same hustle and energy player. He improved his jumpshot but you can't say that was because of Brown. Woods was always talented. He just finally had his head on straight. I'll give Brown and Isiah credit on that one. Jamal played some great meaningless games in the final few weeks. Butler looked solid even from the beginning of the year on those rare occasions he got a chance to play. The verdict: Of all the players you listed, only one improved during the year and it was only for a few weeks.

Bonn1997 is right. And even the whole Jamal thing is a bit dubious. The guy could always play. He just needed to refine his game. I'm not sure it was necessary to have him TOTALLY lost for most of the year, just to get his game right for a few weeks. Was it the only way to reach him and get him to play better? I don't think so. There's never just ONE WAY to do anything in Basketball. Chuck Daly wasn't a tyrant and was none not to believe in tough long practices, yet his teams were tough and played hard every night. Don't tell me that LB has the corner on coaching and there's no other way to achieve good results. LB's job was to coach the team and win games. He's NOT THE GM and tho his input can be of some help. He wasn't the GM in Detroit either and they did quite fine. IF LB shuts up and coaches, he's still here now and we wouldn't have been so embarrassed.
