This is not a player who can take an average team on his back to the finals.

Who can? These days, only a healthy Dwight and Lebron.

Historyically? THe Legends did. Most of them were "batman" and had a "robin" to help them.

I think the debate is nicely fuled by the media and perpetuated by "hate" and on the other side "homer love".

Fixed.

Take to the finals Dwight did.

I never said "winning the finals". Lebron took a very avg. Cavs team. And lost.

Lewis and Turkoglu had more to do with that than Dwight.

I agree, Dwight had a solid playoff run but kinda stunk up the joint in the NBA Finals:

NBA Finals
15.4 Pts/Gm
FG% 48.8
FT% 603
15.2 Reb/Gm
2.2 Ast/Gm
4.0 Blk/Gm
1.6 Stls/Gm
4.0 TOs/Gm

The 1 game the Magic won in the NBA Finals, he eclipses the 20 pt margin. The other 4 games he was a non factor on offense. On top of that, he averaged 4 turnovers a game which pretty much says everything.

TO's are a tricky stat to read. Could mean that Dwight sucks and had butterfingers. Could mean his teammates were so god awful the defense could concentrate on Dwight alone.

I have to say it is the former, Dwight was that bad in the finals that year. In the Game 2 and Game 4 losses, he had 7 Turnovers each game.

Nalod's comment was about taking a mediocre team to the finals, not how the player performed in the finals. Even if Dwight was subpar in the finals, it says a lot that he could carry that mediocre team to the finals.

Actually Cash is right, without Turkoglu and Lewis(17 pts/gm each) scoring punch they don't make it all the way to the finals, because Dwight Howard was all over the place in the postseason, good series followed by a bad series, then good series, then dreadful finals.

What happened in the finals we know. THEY LOST!

But they got there.

Did Dwight just suck or was the LAKERS WITH BYNUM AND PAU TOO MUCH?

Jeez!

That year was Lebron taking Cavs to Semis losing to Orlando.

ANd A very good Nugget team with "you know who!"

Are we actually having a discussion about who was more important to the Orlando finals run? Howard vs Lewis/Turkeyglue?

if the Knicks end up making it to the Finals one of these days (who knows, maybe wade and Bosh breakdown when the Knicks get matched up with them, etc.) I wonder if there will be any celebration on these boards. probably not

Howard undoubtedly is very important to the Magic, and was a key factor defensively during the 2009 run. When your best player doesn't step up offensively, it's up to the 2nd and 3rd guy to pick him up which Lewis and Turkuglo did.

Probably not. It'll be "Melo looks fat in his Eastern Conference Champions" T Shirt.

And "imagine how the yoots would be celebrating with so much more honest vigor and how much better the Finals could be playing the game the right way..."

In Truth, NY fans just want to actually see a consistently good product in order to believe fully in Melo and the rest of this team. The team has struggled for MOST of the time that Melo has been here. That's not gonna endear Melo to a large part of the fan base. This year he has a chance to create a better legacy for himself with a big year.

IF this team can burst out of the gate playing the kind of D they did last year I can see this team being a 50+ win team. I LOVE the fact that we doubled down on the strength of the team, which was our defense. With Felton, Kidd, Brewer, JR and a Healthy Shump we will be much more equipped to defend the perimeter in the playoffs. That's a lot of big tough guards. Then behind them we'll have Tyson and Camby. Gotta like that amount of defensive talent.

I am sick of all the hate the Carmelo gets. Sometimes I question the guy myself, but he never gets the benefit of doubt from the media or NY haters. I really hope this guy tear the NBA up next season, and bring the team deep in the play off.

I think most everyone on these very pages wishes the very same. Expectations are high for him. Its why he came to NY!

Last year was one of Melo's worst seasons in his career. If not for his unbelievable surge in April who knows what NY fans would think of him. IMO it's fair to critique Melo's game since coming here. He's no different than any other star that comes to NY. They pretty much all get the same treatment. If you come here and WIN you can't match the level of honor and prestige that comes with it. I'm pretty sure that if Melo, who is in his prime, has a great year and the team goes deep in the playoffs, he'll get a lot of acclaim. He's gonna be on a lot of national TV this year so if he really shines all the accolades will come his way.

Trust me, we ALL want Melo to have a great year!

Most fans want Melo to do great because it’s the only way for the Knicks to be truly relevant again, however, you can’t really blame the fans for their wait and see approach these days, considering that Melo was not in great basketball shape last season, got the coach to resigned and recently made a dumb mistake by calling out a TEAMMATE’S CONTRACT. By making the Knicks a championship contender Melo will make a lot of Knicks fans happy and they will embrace him, but Melo has to do it first.
