btw, What I liked about Balkman was his instincts and his ability to fill the passing lanes.

I mentioned this in another thread, but Balkman reminds me of STACEY AUGMON. Both measured at 6'6 and half at the pre draft. Both are long armed, energy players who effortlessly turn from defense to ofense to fill the lane and both are somewhat uncomfortable with the ball in the hands out on the wing in half court situations.

Guys,

Please lets not make this Balkman V Ariza. Truth is, I wish we had them both to develop. They are similar players, but they have some different abilities.

Balkman may be better than Ariza, I believe he is a more mature player. However, my understanding is that Ariza is getting some phone calls from around the league, so he is not looked upon as some putrid player.

oohah

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

Please don't misunderstand my saying Balkman doesn't remind me of Ariza as me not liking Ariza. Brown abused him, and it was unforgivable.

Liberty commercial on. Many Knicks players were passed over in the WNBA draft.

Ward is boring us to death, just like he did on the court.

He always was a sad piece of crap!

impressions

The 2005 guys look real good. The 2006 guys, not on par with the talent of 2005. Balkman looks very similar to Ariza--not a bad thing, but I saw him get busted on the D inside and off the dribble. I dont no where he would play in the nBA, if he plays at all. Collins looked passive, he made a couple of plays, but doesnt look like an up tempo type player. I didnt even see him bring up the ball. Nothing that surprised me there today. I dont see how we pas up on Marcus Williams for either or really both of these players. If I could trade both for marcus right now, I would.

Why don't we wait until summer league is over and then we can give our analysis!

I'll never trust this' team again.

it will be hard for balkman to play as well as ariza has to start his career. i believe trevor is the better prospect and I think his 40minute per is quite telling of what he could be with more time

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/arizatr01.html

when he went over to Orlando his rebounding levels actually went up

i never thought of trevor as a low IQ player and his stats don't say it either.

but the main jist of it---balkman and ariza are of the same ilk. there is no perfect comparison. both are long armed athletic athletes who bring energy get into passing lanes finish strong i just happen to think trevor has a bigger upside.

Thats not true. If you remember, Trevor was a pretty good passer, he stole a lot of balls getting into lanes, hes a very very good rebounder from the 3 spot. He brought energy to the floor--he had a nice little impact for us in yr 1--yr 2 was screwed up by LB.

he was a better offensive player at UCLA at 18 than Balkaman was at any point in his career. I think this is typical NY---once a guy i gone--hes trash. Balkman is getting a lot of hype--i wonder what happens when he throws up his first airball and gets a little exposed for lack of skills and size in the big show.

If this Ariza guy turns out to be a pretty good player, if not a star, then that just adds to the Zeke mystic of finding talent for the league.

But he plays with a low hoops IQ.

I didn't watch many South Carolina games, so I don't know what Balkman's role was in the offense, but from watching him play in one SL game, which means very little, but that's all anyone here is basing most of their observations on, the kid has a court sense that Ariza couldn't dream about.

Ariza didn't throw up airballs? Come on.

Jesus christ. Ariza sucks. Why are we talking about him. The guys an idiot. Maybe it's cause he's young but he's clues on the offensive end. Just cause he can run and jump doesnt mean he can play basketball.

Let's compare our rookies to people who are proven to be good. Not unproven players who have a potential to be good.

Thank you. A very reasonable post. I was getting tired of reading the mindless Ariza bashing. The same guys who thought Ariza was a future all-star then changed to making Ariza sound like he's the worst player in the league. Now he has no jump shot, looks awkward on his dunks, is a low IQ player, can't drive to the rim, can't play defense, is weak, etc... Wow... maybe we can pin World War II on him, while we're at it. No offense guys, you can like Balkman, but in your like of Balkman, you don't have to knock down another player mindlessly, for no other reason than the fact that he's not a Knick. Anyway, again oohah, I appreciate you not falling into that trap and giving a very reasonable analysis of the situation.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I can see where Briggs is coming up with the Ariza comparisons, but the way I see it in just a little bit of time:

Ariza is much longer and more of a ball hawk defender, even though he still hasn't learned to be that great yet. He seems to have that ability though and Ariza was very aggresive going for those boards. Balkman seems to have a better ball handle and body control. Both are good passers.

Both have crappy Js, but Ariza was MUCH better. Better form, even though not good. Similar athletes, but I think overall, Ariza was a little better and just needs to learn to control himself. At this point, I like having Ariza a lot more than Francis, and probably Balkman for that matter. He'll dive on the floor for loose balls, and will probably dunk over people and make some highlite reels in his career, but was he really worth that 20th pick? NO F'in way. Not that I liked the idea of taking Marcus b/c of what we already have, but still...
