So DJ.. how bout that bullpen?

I didn't think the bullpen would be this inconsistent but I also don't see the outstanding bullpen others here were talking about. Mariano's great but the top set-up guys are players I would classify as "better than the average mlb reliever but nothing special."

Which is why I'm still and always have been all for Joba in that pen.

why why why?

bullpen is just fine. veras spot is gonna be gone to melancon/robertson soon. marte is a douche.

Bullpen is just fine? In 30 innings, it has an ERA over 6--an ERA around 5 even if you don't count Marte's last outing. We haven't had a set-up man I was confident in since Tom Gordon (and Joba's brief bullpen stints), and even he stunk in the playoffs. The problem now is we desperately need Joba in both the bullpen and the starting rotation, as NEITHER of the two looks good.

Marte & Nady sure have paid huge dividends, haven't they? so happy we gave up Jose Tabata to get them.

Dude Tabata is a throw-away, the dude has a litany of issues both on the field and off.

Most recently...
On March 23 2009, Tabata's wife, Amalia Tabata Pereira, who is 23 years his senior, was arrested and charged with abduction after allegedly kidnapping a 2-month-old girl in Florida by posing as an immigration officer; the baby was found unharmed in a shopping center later the same day.[3] Tabata told the media that Pereira, who he married in January 2008, had told him that she had given birth and that the baby was his.

veras has been the culprit in 2 winnable games. the one game when wang went out in the 2nd inning doesn't count. no bullpen is perfect, but we got a good one.

Yesterday's game wasn't winnable? It was 1-1 before Marte f'd up. That's 3 blown winnable games already. Some games don't count? Earlier you and others were saying we had the best bullpen in baseball. Now if you've changed and all you're saying is that we have a good bullpen, I wouldn't disagree but would say it's premature to agree also. In order for me to be really impressed with a team's bullpen, I'd want it to have a setup man who's as dependable as Mariano was (when Wettland closed), Gordon was (in the regular season at least), or Joba was (in his brief stints in the bullpen). Right now our bridge from the starter to Mariano is guys who can be good but are unpredictable and not dependable.

we have the best bullpen. i'm not wavering on it. we have a pitcher in AAA that's better than everybody other than mo going to be called up soon. that will eliminate the times we have to use veras - he is the 1 guy that has blown it.

Looks like we've called up first baseman Juan Miranda and sent Robertson back down. Matsui is also questionable with fluid in his repaired knee.

I've been assuming there was probably something physically wrong with Matsui because he's too good a hitter to struggle like this. It looks like all the knee surgeries in the world can't fix him.

i don't care about what spousal issues... the kid was a highly touted baseball prospect... how do u factor him as a throw away now all of a sudden? we gave him away for a situational lefty that can't get lefties out & a stopgap fill in veteran who gave us 2 months of service... you wanna tell me that was a good trade? come on bro... call it like it is, we shoulda gotten more for Tabata.

Why should we have gotten more for him? Marte is being used as a situational lefty here, but he was a damn good reliever for Pittsburgh and one that was being chased by a ton of teams when the Yanks acquired him. He didn't have 15 holds and 5 saves with a 3.40 ERA for nothing. Tabata and his various on and off field incidents is the reason he was traded.

That's how it is.

we didn't have to trade for Marte... we coulda just called Phil Coke up & used him, he did a fine job last year for us in that role... i don't even know what you're trying to contest here, ur saying Tabata wasn't 1 of our more highly touted prospects when we traded him? i don't care if he had off the field issues or not, that doesn't mean u throw him away for a situational lefty & a 2 month rental... sorry but u ain't convincing me on this one... we shouldn't have made that trade IMO.

Bruney's on a mission the past couple years... too bad he got injured last year, he was throwing laser beams too... coulda helped this team get to the playoffs if not for that.

Bruney is so lights out right now - he struck out 7 of the last 8 batters he faced.

He's lost a lot of weight.

Yeah Bruney does looks great. I feel the same as you TMS - I felt bad for him last year when he lost all that weight and then had that injury. I'm absolutely OK with him in the 8th right now. Veras was terrible the other day but I still believe in his stuff (this guy throws 95, 96 with movement with a real tight slider) and I believe in Coke too (subpar so far but he threw a good inning+ yesterday where he cranked it up to 94 mph - bottom line is if Coke is 93-95 with the heater he's gonna get guys out and you can even use him against righties as well. If he's 88-90 he might struggle.). As for Marte, let's be honest, he's been downright bad since he's been a Yankee. First batter he faced was Big Papi at Fenway and he blew him away on 3 pitches... Since then, he hasn't done the job. I still think they should've shown more interest in FA righthander Juan Cruz when he was available. Cruz throws hard with a great slider and he did a great job late in games for Arizona the past few seasons. And with the economy they could've got him on the cheap - not sure what KC signed him for but I bet it was less than he was looking for. He would've been perfect right now. Opportunity missed as far as I'm concerned but I think they still have enough to get by here. A-Rod coming back, maybe even sooner than expected, is exactly what this team needs right now. Hopefully Wang gets himself straightened out today as well...

definitely agree w/u on Juan Cruz, i remember u were talking him up a lot in the offseason... maybe because they were already stacked w/righty arms they didn't show more interest in him? he definitely put up some nice numbers in Arizona the past couple years & we coulda signed him for $1 million less than what Marte got signed for, but again lefty relievers are in more demand... i don't mind the dollars Marte got signed for but giving up 1 of our top prospects to get him was an act of desperation in my view, & they still didn't make the playoffs last year... i realize they had to do what they could to avoid missing out on postseason play but u also have to be responsible w/the use of your young talent.

as for A-Rod, when he comes back i think it'll take him a while to get his swing back, so the pitching staff really needs to keep this team from falling too far back in the 1st couple months of the season... luckily right now both TB & BOS aren't doing so hot either in the W-L column... Chien Ming really needs to get his mechanics right... i hope it's just mechanics & there's nothing physically holding him back.
