Someone release this moron. Trade him for a Class A pitcher. Disgusting.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

outside of these 2 bums, our bullpen is really good. we just called up robertson too - should've used him here. i never like veras. marte is a 1 or 2 batter guy maximum but alas, he looks much better in the NL than up here. some fools paid hundreds/thousands to be at that game today - sucks to be them right now.

so robertson comes in, throws a scoreless inning and gets 2K's.

subtract veras + marte - add robertson + melancon...

I didn't think the bullpen would be this inconsistent but I also don't see the outstanding bullpen others here were talking about. Mariano's great but the top set-up guys are players I would classify as "better than the average mlb reliever but nothing special."

Which is why I'm still and always have been all for Joba in that pen.

Joba working the 8th would go a long way to shortening the game

He pitched an inning, man! Had a strike out, too!
No, I knew that but "having a little fun" made it sound to me like he did something inappropriate while on the mound. Maybe I just misunderstood his post though.

[Edited by - bonn1997 on 04-16-2009 12:30 PM]

score was 15-5 & Swisher was brought in to pitch the 8th cuz they ran out of pitchers in the pen... he asked for the ball after he struck out Gabe Kapler, obviously as a joke to poke fun at himself, but Michael Kay in his usual stick up the arse fashion questioned whether that was cool to do in a game u were getting blown out in, suggesting that Swisher was showing up the opposition... gimme a break... if Gabe Kapler or any of the Rays have a problem w/that they only needed to look at the scoreboard & see that they were clobbering the Yankees at that point... like David Cone said, the Rays have no beef in that instance.

I see. Yeah, that sounds innocent enough.

Man, this was a ****ty loss. When your ace battles hard and throws about 125 pitches and your bullpen totally collapses, it sucks. They're playing like a .500 team right now.

at least CC's throwing well, which is encouraging... bullpen crapped the bed today & the bats were silent, but Cliff Lee is a name brand pitcher so i won't get overly upset about this loss... sucks to lose the 1st game at the new stadium but there'll be plenty of opportunities to reverse that trend in the coming years.

1 more tiny criticism i have of the new stadium, i don't like how the monuments are hidden behind the CF wall out of view... there should be at least a clear plexiglass in the wall so u can see the monuments when the camera pans into view like there was in the old stadium... how u gonna have the Babe, Lou, Joe D, the Mick & Miller Huggins hidden behind a wall like that? that's just wrong.

CC threw all right. He allowed 10 runners in 5 2/3--that's why his pitch count got so high and he had to come out early.

Lee is the Cy Young pitcher but he struggled in his first couple starts this year and used to suck and we couldn't manage to get some runs on the board. The pen is what ultimately killed this game, but I'm more worried about the lineup till ARod comes back. I think we'll probably be getting strings of good starting pitching performances and we gotta back that up with adequate run support.

1 ER in 5.2 is a good start if u ask me, i don't care how many baserunners he allowed... he's not gonna have dominant stuff every night, it's those games when his stuff isn't great but he fights & doesn't allow runs to score that i give props for more often than when a guy just dominates the entire game... that shows character & resiliency.

Marte & Nady sure have paid huge dividends, haven't they? so happy we gave up Jose Tabata to get them.

It's not that it was a bad start by any means but if he hadn't allowed so many walks and hits, he might have gone 2 more innings and gotten the game right to Mariano.
I was never crazy about the Marte acquisition. I pointed out that our righties were just as good at getting lefties out as he was. I was a fan of the Nady signing. I think he was a solid player last season for us and hopefully he will be when healthy again.

Nady wasn't signed, he came in the same trade we got Marte from the Pirates... we gave up 1 of our top young prospects in that trade in Tabata... i didn't like the deal then & i like it less now... not that Tabata's doing anything yet in the majors but when u give up 1 of your top prospects u wanna get something more than a situational lefty & a stopgap fill in type player... that's just me.

Yeah, I remember we got him in a trade. I don't know what I was thinking when I said "signing"
