I recall a thread before the season started...

"BY THE NUMBERS"

The thread called to attention Melo's overall numbers in comparison to Pierce/Wade/KOBE.....In other words these 3 players were being stamped down in efforts to prop Melo up. Now that one of these players has spoken out in favor of Melo....said player is considered "BY THE NUMBERS" the greatest player ever or on par with Jordan

Bizarre....Bizarre....Bizarre

You trying to play the margins again, in one breath stating Melo's history means what we're seeing now just masks inherent, uncorrectable flaws, in the next laying out what he needs to do to legitimize his superstar status.

Which is it please?

his TS% which in my opinion is the key reason he has underachieved-- poor shot selection and taking generally 4-6 too many shots per game, many of the extra being poorly-selected shots has resulted in my skepticism-- not lack of belief so much as wait and see. i maintained that he needed to tighten up his game on the offensive end in a big way. this season he is actually doing that and the knicks are more successful as a team because of it.

his career he is 54.5%TS and this season he is shooting an elite 59.2TS% thus far. and success has come with this elevation of his game. just because history has shown a pattern statistically does not mean that the problem is either inherent or uncorrectable. but a student of the game and statistics will remain skeptical.

if he is going to remain a scorer primarily and not a player who makes others better then at least be elite at the one thing you do... and he has so far.

that said, in the playoffs he must make a supreme effort to focus on his defensive assignment if he is going to help the team in the conference finals, should the knicks make it there.

i don't know what "superstar status" means. a truly great player will be a legitimate two-way player. and again, it seems like anthony is moving in that direction. hooray for melo.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

Skepticism and pessimism are distinct entities. "Fool's gold" strikes me as more of a characteristic of the latter.

So I'm going to ask you a simple question - the change he's made, that you've argued at great length in the past he was ever likely to make, IS it likely to stop ("fool's gold") in your opinion?

All required is a up and down yes or no.

Your gold standard for the type of player you value is Paul Pierce. Now tell me, do you think Pierce would have the 1 ring he does without Garnett, and/or Allen?

I'll help you. He would not.

So if for sake of discussion we cancel out Shaq for Garnett, score is Kobe 2, Paul 0.

Correct?

incorrect.

pierce has been criminally underrated as a player, playing with terrible teams and playing alongside clowns like antoine walker for the first part of his career. pierce is a finals mvp.

bryant has been overrated for much of his career, as has melo.

players like pierce and ginobili don't have marketable games but they know how to play the game and it is rare they get their due compared to stern's darlings.

Kobe has won 5 nba championships and Olympic Gold Medals. Not sure why his paying compliments to a Knick player has resulted in guys trying to discredit what he said. The fact that he holds Melo in such high regard is awesome. Love that he said this:
To Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony is the toughest cover in the NBA. Tougher, even, than LeBron James.
"For me, yeah," Bryant told Stephen A. Smith in an interview Wednesday.

"He’s always been a player that I enjoyed guarding the most," Bryant said. "He was the most difficult because of his size and his speed."

Listen to Kobe's comments:

Bryant added that Anthony's shooting range, ability to drive to the rim and score in the post make him one of the most lethal offensive weapons in the NBA.

"Melo does it all and he’s as strong as a bull," Bryant said. "For me, I weight (180 pounds) soaking wet. Going up against that bull, man, it’s fun but it’s extremely challenging."

sorry but your question is more nuanced than you would like it to be.

if we are to trust in the statistical norm he will regress, most likely by tailing off on shooting the 3ball. 45.5% from 3 this season belies expectations based on his past performance in this area.

when those shots are not falling-- think how effortlessly he stepped into 3point shots the game before last against the nets with nobody underneath the basket-- it will hurt his team. so he will need to find other ways to be effective like getting to the line more than 10-12 times a game. 82 games is 10 games too many.

now as to skepticism versus pessimism: prior to this season i have been nothing if not pessimistic. this season with each passing "good" game for him the scale moves away from pessimism and towards skepticism.

for me it is all about winning the division, 1st or second seed, and a strong ecf appearance. anything beyond that i will be thrilled, to be honest.

acceptable?

you could stand a refresher course in psychology. bryant is a vain douche who is projecting his own limitations as a player onto carmelo who shares the exact same limitations. of course bryant would sympathize with what amounts to an extension of himself. both these dudes lack utterly the ability for self-reflection and introspection. in speaking about carmelo's problems he is speaking about himself.

There are several problems with this statement.

1. You can not say that he needs a refresher in a psychology "Course" and make a statement regarding self-reflection, when you really don't fully examine this subject or it's studies until about your second full year as a psych major... and this is coming from a psych major.

2. You say Carmelo lack the "ability for self-reflection and introspection" well, really there is no need to use both words, but okay. And the first flaw in your argument is his constant acknowledgement of "GOD", if you've taken a Philosophy and religion class along with that psychology class, you will know that ... the first rule in finding "GOD" is finding yourself, which is a direct cause for self reflection.

Also his ability to point out his flaws and the change in his game this year is called "self correct", which is brought upon "self reflection".

3. Exactly, what are Kobe limitations, and if these limitations have led him to 5 championships, and potentially the second greatest sg to play the game, is this really a valid argument?

4. I agree, Kobe is an a**hole but so are other greats. Michael Jordan was the biggest one!

5. Take away Kobe statements, you still have other players stating the same exact thing. Maybe Jason Kidd, Chris Mullen and Steve Kerr are more credible in your eyes. I would take what they say to the "bank" as well.

6. See, the problem with making statements about someone's character without knowing them can lead to a lot of misunderstanding ... It works both ways, I can "judge" you and say that you have a problem with self-reflection because of your inability to forgive the trade is directly linked to the inability to self reflect.

no need to waste keystrokes on me. melo and bryant are vain douches and their games are extensions of their vanity and douchiness.

i love players who play FOR others.
i like players who play WITH others.
i DON"T like players who merely play ALONGSIDE others.

+1. I'm really not sure what "change he's made" Knickoftime is referring to. The only thing that's changed is that a much higher percentage of his 3s are going in right now. It's not like he's had better 2 pt shot selection or efficiency or a clear improvement in any other area of the game.

Glad you admitted your position/agenda. I disagree about Melo. At least we can watch your team mvp tonight. Also, you have posted before that you felt that Melo would have had more character if he waited until he became a free agent and then signed with the Knicks. Is this still your position and the source of your Melo hate?
