James Harden? Brandon Jennings?

If all of Griffin, Rubio, Thabeet, Curry, Evans, Hill, Derozan are gone, those guys will be available, and I would choose them over some of the people on that list as well.

As far as Derozan, no thanks there is no place on a D'Antoni team for a 2 that at best is gonna end up being a below average shooter (he shot like 16% from the college 3 point line this year) and we don't even have a real need at that position with Chandler.

welcome to the forums... just to address your point about Demar, no offense to you but i'm sick & tired of people saying we can't draft so & so because "he's got no place on an MDA team", that's just silly talk... is Josh Smith an MDA style player that launches 3's like there's no tomorrow from the perimeter? no... do u think we could use a guy like Josh Smith right now on this team? i sure as hell do... let's just say for argument's sake that even if Derozan doesn't develop a consistent outside J, he's still every bit as athletically gifted as Josh Smith is, & he's still gonna bulk up & get bigger u have to assume... Josh Smith was like 215 lbs. in HS, look at him now... he's as big as Lebron James dude & still jumps outta the gym! Derozan's already a solid 225 at 19 years old, my guess is he'll be at least 240 by the time he's 23... i don't wanna hear this talk about how we don't need an athletic freak at the 2G spot who can't shoot 3's when u don't even know how his shot will progress once he hits the NBA... plenty of NBA stars have shot for low percentage from 3 their freshman year in college to go on to big success in the pros... i don't believe that will be the case anyway cuz he's already got nice form on his shot & he did shoot for a good % from beyond 3 a year before in HS.

IMO Demar's skills are every bit as impressive as Josh Smith demonstrated at the same age.

The question is--what do the Knicks do if Stephon Curry and Tyreke Evans are NOT there at 8 or 9?

If the Knicks are looking PG, I might take Holiday if he wowed me in his workouts. Good size, D ability, seems to have a decent wingspan, can go to the basket with both hands, PG mentality, and from what I have seen his jumper does not have any major flaws in it like Evans.

Harden just got a glowing report from Ford (he also mentions a BB exec who saw a difference in his game), for what it is worth, and he is supposedly in much better shape than he was during March Madness- lost some weight, put on some muscle, etc.. I have spoken out against the guy because of his lack of quickness and the lack of a quick release on his shot, but the report said his shot looks better. With Harden you get maturity beyond his year, his high BB IQ, and a fairly versatile game, although I would still like to see how he plays D against an NBA SG.

I just feel that the Knicks see this as a draft that they are going to come out of with a PG, and you have a lot of flavors to choose from.

I have no issue with Mullens if he has had a brain implant and actually plays like a 7 foot center with ridiculous athletic ability and not the SF he seems to think he is. If his game could be fixed up, I think he would have a greater upside than Thabeet, but I wonder if he will ever have the consistency on the court that you want from a center.

By the way, if Harden really has gotten in significantly better shape in under 3 months, that should make people realize that it is not impossible for guys like Rubio, Curry, etc. to add some muscle in only a short period of time.

I don't know about this BS that Mullens isnt a hard worker or how someone can label a 19 YO someone with work ethic problems. I think when you take something seriously--like this article seriously suggests and you have an elite level athlete for a 7-1 guy with a great frame--he's going to exceed expectations by far. It's all about environment --Pat Riley made sure the guys practiced adn played hard and they all did it year round and were winners. If a coach sets into motion that you need to work hard--most guys will work hard. Yes teams will miss the boat with this kid--I guarantee it but he would be perfect as an uptempo 5 in this system and I think that trumps many of the PGs in this draft IF NOT ALL OF THEM. PGs --even good ones will be found all the way down the draft.

Im not a lover of this draft--to me it scks. If I could angle out of 8 and pick up a 2010 and look for a team that I can get a second 1 in the 17-25 area where almost for certain a solid PG will fall to based on the numbers--but for me I would angle to get Mullens find a PG in the later round of the 1st by buying in on the cheap and see if I can get into a great 2010 draft.

If I was able to walk out with Pheonix 2010 and their 14 for the 8 and take Mullens--buy in around 19-23 and pick up Holiday or Calathes ==I think that is a solid strategic draft for what is out there this year

Mullens hard at it prepping for NBA
Tuesday, April 28, 2009 3:04 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Las Vegas advertises itself as a sin city where, whatever happens there, stays there.

Some athletes going to Joe Abunassar's Impact Basketball training center there for the first time imagine indulging themselves in the city's attractions, Abunassar said. Then he laughed.

"No one does anything here," he said, beyond eating, sleeping and training.

After three weeks in town preparing for the NBA draft, B.J. Mullens can vouch for that.

"There's no fun going on here," the recently departed Ohio State freshman said during his lunch break one day last week. "The only thing we see is the gym and the apartment. We're working out six hours a day, every day."

And on the seventh day?

"Sunday's optional," Mullens said. "But we're coming in anytime we get a chance."

Mullens, 20, said his only extracurricular activity is the video gaming system he took with him. Otherwise, he is working harder than ever.

"It's now or never," he said. "You can't hold nothing back. You've got to give it your all."

Ohio State was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament in the first round March 20. Less than a week later, the 7-foot Mullens announced that he was leaving school to enter the June 25 draft, in which he long has been projected as a first-round pick.

Contrary to what he and coach Thad Matta said publicly before and during the season, Mullens said last week that he never considered staying at Ohio State longer than the year he was required to.

"It's always been my goal to go to the NBA," he said. "I told coach Matta when I came in that if I had had a chance to go out of high school and not attend college, I would have. He said, 'That's fine.' It was a goal to go to college, but it's my dream to play NBA basketball."

Mullens' well-documented financial hardship was not a factor in his decision, he said, nor did his underwhelming performance as a freshman at Ohio State make him doubt whether he is ready to make the jump. "I'm positive I'm ready," he said.

Facilities such as Abunassar's (pronounced ah-BOO-nah-sar) exist in part to make sure that unseasoned prodigies such as Mullens are ready when NBA teams begin working them out in June. Established stars such as Chauncey Billups and Kevin Garnett also use it in the offseason to stay in shape and keep their competitive edge. They pay a reported $25,000 a year to avail themselves of the services offered by Abunassar's staff of trainers, masseurs, nutritionists and coaches.

Mullens said he has lost 10 pounds, to 255, but gained strength since he has been in Las Vegas, following a six-meals-a-day diet designed for him by a nutritionist.

On the court, Mullens works for 90 minutes every morning on basketball-specific skills and trains for another 90 minutes to improve his speed, quickness, agility, explosiveness and balance. After lunch, he puts in 90 minutes on a specific technique each day -- posting up, setting screens or popping open for shots, for example -- before finishing his day with an hour or so of more training drills.

Mullens said he couldn't have received such individual attention had he stayed another year at Ohio State.

He was marked down during his one college season for not being more aggressive and physical in the post. Abunassar, a former college assistant coach, said raising Mullens' level of aggressiveness is a work in progress but making him a more physical player is not necessarily the best use of his talent.

"B.J.'s game is never going to be to run you over and be an animal. He's got a bit of finesse," Abunassar said. "Making him into a tough, fierce player might not be putting his best foot forward. We want to exploit his length and skill set.

"We're pushing him every day in drills to use his body better, to use his length. We don't want B.J. banging. We want him to use his quickness and his speed and his flexibility to get around (opponents). He's very skilled and very fast. He's got all the makings of a guy who's going to play in the NBA for a long time."

This from a guy who doesn't mind having his 6'10 (oh yeah and still growing) player stand out on the 3 point perimeter instead of banging in the post. Maybe Mullens has a sore back too.

maybe you don't have a grasp of the guy's skill set. do you think he's elton brand? is dirk nowitzki’s competitive advantage wasted by trying to turn him into a banger in the post?

From what I have read in other pieces--they are patterning his game after Pau Gasol. Pau is a guy who doesnt necessarily get in there and bomb people like a Bark;ey but he uses his length skills and speed to score rebound and block shots.

Maybe you don't have a full grasp of Dirk's skill. He can bang in the post and play on the perimeter. He is an inside outside guy. That's why every year there is a search on for any foreign prospect that can duplicate that feat. If he did nothing but play on the perimeter and just try to drive to the basket he would be a Hedo.

dirk doees not bang in the post. i don't know where you're coming up with that.

with time and added strength and bulk gallo could be expected to be stronger around the hoop. right now he offers what dirk does in terms of competitive advantage - shooting, driving and passing from a big man who's able to get his shot off whenever he wants.

Funny guy.

Remember, Gallinari has done a lot of growing in the past few years, and was originally a SF, and even more of a SG in some ways. I would like to see him at about 235-40 with some post-up moves, as well as his SF stuff.

I don't see why Gallinari and Mullens can't watch some Tim Duncan and Kevin McHale highlights to learn how to operate in the paint and use the backboard to their advantage.

I see Mullens as more of a PF or C. I think he could be the perfect C for an MDA team based on his general skills, but I am not too sure how sharp the guy is. I actually think you have a lot of high BB IQ guys in this draft- Griffin, Rubio, Curry, Harden, are just a few of them- but my understanding is that Mullens is not on that list.

It's called having a full arsenal and good footwork. Inside and out. If you think Dirk just gets all his points on the perimeter than I don't know what to say to make you change your mind.

Offense: Gets about a quarter of his offensive possessions as a spot up shooter, with another fifth coming from post ups. Another quarter comes from pick and rolls and isolations. Gets most of his shots as a jump shooter. Has a great stroke that is impossible for most players to block due to his size and high release point. Can knock down the three at a good clip (although his percentages are down this season) and hit fade-aways from almost any distance. Great ball handler for his size. Can bring the ball up the floor from time to time. Capable of driving off the dribble with either hand. Can take the ball all the way to the rim or dominate the midrange game. Good in the post as well. Uses a nice array of fakes to get open look underneath. Likes to turn over his right shoulder and then fade away. Can finish consistently with both hands at the rim. Draws contact well. Gets to the line at a phenomenal clip, and shoots a great percentage once there. A poor offensive rebounder for his size. Tremendous passer for his height. Can really do it all offensively. Real team player. Hard to defend as an individual. It usual takes a team effort to shut him down. Seems to get somewhat passive at the end of games.

Hey, if I could somehow come out of this draft with a PG (Curry or Holiday) and somehow pick up a big man (Mullens), I would be quite happy. Again, though, with Mullens the issue will be consistency and the ability to understand his role on the team.

If you start loading your team with skilled 7-1 6-10 etc.. guys then we will have something. We have not done that in 10 years--my personal opinion it's one of if not THE reason why we have lost for a decade. Youve seen Ohio State play--he knows how to play the game0--jez he set more picks in 30 games then all of the Knicks combined this year. You get a guy who is willing to put in the work 6-7 days a week 6 hours a day[my guess is Chris Washburn wasnt on that program] who is 7-1 260--you don't need to be a brain scientist--you need to learn what they teach you work hard and just get better and better. I don't care what you do--hard work like that will pay off.

I don't anyone will ever say that Amare is a guy with a high BB IQ but he seem to do ok in D'Antoni offense. Just a thought.
I don't like to play bad rookies , I like to play good rookies - Mike D'Antoni
Knicks to pick Stephen Curry with 8th pick?
