If I were the Yankees, I'd call up the Rockies and have a lengthy discussion about Garrett Atkins. He'd make a fine stopgap for the ARod situation and can backup both 3rd as well as 1st/DH for when ARod does come back. The Rockies have to be looking to move him with Ian Stewart (a Rockie top prospect) having a nice finish to last year and Atkins being 29 years old. Atkins is a solid hitter and would fit in pretty well this team.

so far this Spring Brett Gardner's batting 6 for 15 w/2 HRs & 2 doubles... hopefully he keeps this up so he can win the fulltime CFer spot to start the season... i really like the added dimension he brings to the team on offense... Melky should probably be the reserve CFer on this team... not sure what they plan on doing w/Nady or Swisher this year... too bad neither of them can play 3B... maybe a trade gets done, unless they just plan on making due w/Cody Ransom for a few weeks.

Atkins has had one of the most stark home/away splits in the MLB the last couple years. He's not just ordinary, but pretty poor away from Coors. I'd keep a solid distance from him.

Nady came up as a 3rd baseman, but I don't think he's played there in years and probably can't really play there in the MLB

Atkins HRs Home/Away splits for his career HR wise are even, as are his RBI numbers. The big difference with Atkins is batting average but in the Yankees lineup I think he would be able to drive in a bunch of runs with some decent protection behind him.

I think its no coincedence that Lee became an MVP caliber player only when he moved to playing at Wrigley. In Lee's case, he was a pretty good hitter before. But I'd be pretty skeptical that Atkins could put up better than average numbers by playing at New Yankee Stadium, which I assume will play similar to Old Yankee Stadium- a park that has skewed to pitchers for the last several years.

it's too bad we didn't know about this injury earlier or else we would have signed Joe Crede to a 1 year deal... Minny got him at a huge bargain ($2.5 mil w/performance incentives that can bring it up to $7 mil overall)

I'm not trying to tell you that Atkins would be an all-star while ARod is out. I just think he'd be a solid source of RBI in the absence and play a good 3B. I mean if Brosious could hit in Yankee stadium then I think Atkins can too. It'd be better than using Ransom and then he'd be a great fill-in at the corners/DH as well.

There should be a decent veteran cut in camp that could play 3b for 3-4 weeks for us.

i'm not interested in Mark Grudz tho... i'd rather have Cody Ransom playing fulltime at 3B than have some old weak hitting veteran come in for a few weeks...

anyone know what Andy Phillips is up to these days?

Ransom reminds me of Clay Bellinger... athletic dude, likeable guy, has a little bit of pop in his bat... i hope he & Brett Gardner are given a chance this year cuz i think they can do a solid job til better options become available.

AJ Burnett had a really impressive start today. The guy looks like he's in midseason form. He easily has the best stuff on the staff. It's just nasty. If the guy can stay healthy, he's going to win 20 games easily.

This staff has the potential to be really special. I mean they already have the best bullpen in baseball so if the starters can do anything, watch out.

If nothing else, their pitching keeps them in most games, with or without ARod.

seriously he was throwing some laser beams out there today... hit 95-96 consistently w/awesome location hitting the corners... if he stays healthy he's gonna be sick for us... IF he stays healthy. *keeping fingers crossed*

Yankees prospect Eric Duncan's progress hits major snag, makes move to outfield

TAMPA - It wasn't all that long ago that Eric Duncan was considered the top prospect in the Yankees' organization. Now, he's little more than an afterthought.

Duncan, the Yankees' first-round draft pick in 2003 out of Florham Park, N.J., looked to be on the fast track after capturing the Arizona Fall League's MVP award in 2005. But an injury-riddled 2006 halted that momentum, and his last two seasons at Triple-A have been less than stellar (.237, 22 homers, 121 RBI in 233 games), leaving the 24-year-old's career in limbo.

"I moved real quick, but the last couple years at Triple-A have definitely been tough," Duncan said. "It's been a huge learning experience."

Duncan, a third baseman who has also played first base in recent years, has started to experiment with the outfield in the past month, looking to increase his versatility. He will be a six-year minor-league free agent after the season, but he hasn't given up his dream of being a Yankee.

"I'm ready to do whatever I need to do to be a Yankee," Duncan said. "If it takes learning the outfield, I'm more than willing to do it. The more gloves you're able to carry, the more valuable you are."

at this point i'll be happy if this kid is the next Cody Ransom... i think utility player is his best bet now... damn shame considering how much promise this guy had when he was drafted.

Duncan can't hit a AAA curveball and has major confidence issues. I wouldn't be surprised if he never reaches the majors or is limited to just a cup of coffee.

Oh man, that's beyond major, especially for such a young person. I hope he recovers quickly and hope that wont be an issue for the rest of his life after that.
