I never understand the first round draft picks that convert to second round picks if they don't convey after a number of years.
I would think the opposite should happen. If we have to wait 5 or 6 years for the pick, the protection should lessen until it conveys. That's what I would push for anyway.

Most teams won't have an indefinite timeline on when the pick conveys that because it impedes their ability to trade future draft picks. The real problem is that the pick should have had a top protections. But at the time we all thought that there was no way the Mavs would miss the playoffs as long as Luka is on the team. We all underestimated how much of a crap show the Mavs would turn into.

Agreed but Dallas will shut down guys to avoid beating Chicago because it serves no benefit to them. Okc will need to lose all of their games this week.

If Dallas keeps their pick, I bet they offer it plus future picks for Anunoby.

They don’t really have future picks to offer and we could easily counter offer

I'm surprised the new CBA didn't directly address pick swaps. But yeah, it's probably in the Mavs best interest long-term if the lose the pick now. Then they can start making moves immediately after the draft ends.

If okc wins tonight that’s it. If okc loses, I would think Dallas would still have to play it out. It’s too bad that okc owns the tiebreaker.

My point is that after 5 years, the protection should just disappear, instead of becoming a second round pick.

Don't discount the Karma **** you factor of life: if Dallas tanks with both Luka and Kyrie sitting and land in that coveted 10th spot before lottery, someone gonna jump them

#9 is Utah and you know Danny knows the deal and is tanking too :)

That can be negotiated but why would any team do that?

Wrong.

OKC wins and then they fall to #11 because their streak of bad luck continues. We add Cason Wallace or Gradey Dick and then they develop and displace RJ and then we are 2024 nba champions

So apologies because I’ve probably asked this already but the above can actually happen right?

Mavs finish season in 10th pick position but during the lottery a 11-14 team could jump them and pick reverts to us?

This is just recognition that the trade didn't work out as planned. Since the picks ended up being protected, the second rounders will be in the front half of the draft.

Tiebreakers in the draft are decided at random (maybe a coin flip). So Chicago and OKC can both make the play in, lose, and then pick before Dallas if they get lucky.

Here's hoping Steph has a big second half vs. OKC

Warriors get the win over OKC, keeping Dallas's play-in hopes alive. Because Dallas's final 3 games are at home, I think it makes tanking harder for them. Kidd is probably on his way out as coach, I'm not sure if management is pulling for a tank if Kidd even cares. Both Luka and Kyrie are listed as doubtful. Sacramento is coming off of a back to back.

Ball is still in Dallas's court. A 3 game win streak against teams already locked into their post season position, followed by play-in wins and a competitive series vs Denver could swing the narrative on the Kyrie trade. Is Slovenian Luka looking forward to playing spoiler against Serbian Jokic?

Utah played tough at the Lakers, maybe they can get the win vs OKC.

If Dallas loses against Sac, they're post season hopes are pretty much over so I expect Luka and Kyrie to push through for the win. Lakers are playing well enough it seems like it would be a big roll of the dice to renounce all their bird rights to sign Kyrie. I'm still hopeful we can get Dallas's pick.

Don’t you mean hates Cuban more than Dolan? Or hates Dolan less than Cuban?

Cuban is definitely less loathsome (for me) than Dolan, but the Kylie trade was awful and they deserve to lose the pick on that basis alone!

The luck of the Knick franchise in the Dolan era is Dallas jumps to #1. Our FO has certainly changed things from a management perspective. Can they bring a lucky rabbits foot to the lottery?

Wouldn’t Kidd survive another year if the mavs make the play-in?

Your not god, are you??? LOL…………
Fate and luck? We came close. In a way by neutering Dallas by taking Brunson we helped create their current mess or perhaps good fortune regarding the pick.

Even more entangled is KP going to the Wiz was suppose to improve them and enable our pick we own convey. It did not despite KP better season.

The season is a success because knicks controlled what they could and delivered on the court. Wiz and Dallas picks if not conveyed still are assets. Knicks luck? I said it before many times that if you increase the opportunities you increase luck. Brunson was an opportunity. Mitch, IQ, Grimes, Deuce all still viable opportunities on the court and as chips. Obi and the geriatric RJ still are opportunities to perform and improve. Not busts.
Reddish was an opportunity that did not pan out. That we had a pick to move him for JHart was.

No team hits them all, but we are getting there.
