When he was coming into the draft, I think a lot of people compared Brewer to Scottie Pippen, because he had that unique athelticism and point foward skill set at Florida.

Poster at Minny's sbnation blog say he is 38% from 3 as a starter. And proclaim him their best defender.

His shot is super iffy, but he was a lockdown perimeter defender at Florida. I think defensive type players look bad on bad teams- because bad teams generally can't score and one guy playing defense doesn't make a difference in results.

Shelden Williams was also considered the "landlord" because he owned the paint. Knicks acquired two young players who were drafted top 10 because of their defensive pedigree primarily. If they add them to the rotation they could improve defensively.

man, I certainly hope what you say holds for both.

Brewer, if he can become of the Bruce Bowen mold would be nice.

Neither can shoot- which means I don't know if they make MDA's rotation. But MDA may have no choice but to play Shelden Williams because he has no size. Turiaf doesn't play half the games.

Shelden played in Duke's Coach K system which is apparently quite similar to MDA's system. I think he could get minutes here.

Brewer is somewhat of an enigma, but when I've seen him play, I've been blown away. He reminds me of a young Trevor Ariza - freak athleticism, lock-down defense.

I hope we keep both and give them a chance here. We'll need the depth and they are potentially quality players.

Screw the Knicks? Really? Why aren't you happy for the improvements in the teams starting lineup or do you not think the team is better with a lineup of Billups, Fields, Melo, & STAT? IMO that compares very well with the best SL's in the East. We can go toe to toe with every team. The bench is weak, but we have to start somewhere. We all would've preferred to keep one of Chandler or Gallo, but we didn't. Still it's a good start to putting together a contender.

At first I was devastated that we lost Mozgov, our only intimidator in the paint but I think Sheldon Williams and Corey Brewer will really improve our team defense. Hopefully Buike comes back and gives us some more D and good shooting off the bench to go along with Douglas, Shawnee & Walker. Mayne Donnie is still trying to improve this team before thursday. And hopefully Donnie calls all the shots from here on out..if he doesn't quit!

nixluva, I love your optimism, it's infectious, and I'm not being a jerk. I think the thing that guys are worried is that we've given up so much in this "good start" that it's also already the beginning of the end. You know my mantra: '04 Pistons, which has become quite ironic now that Billups is headed here.

I like the idea of the "homegrown" youth movement, even if it would have just lead to repeated 1st round bounces for the next 4-5 years against teams like the Heat. Maybe the last 10 years has me thinking way too small and conservative, I will gladly grant anyone that.

I'll just argue let's try not to be like Adam the Bull and these media blowhards who think that anyone who is questioning the logic of this "no-brainer" is an idiot and self-hating. Gallo has fans, Chandler has fans, the Moz even has fans, and Melo has detractors, so those fans will understandably sore. And the specter of Isiah is very uncomfortable. And we still don't know the details of this deal yet. I'm hearing the Knicks are giving up second-round picks too on the latest WFAN 20/20?

There will be plenty to analyze in the coming days but at the end of the day: let's see how these next games go!

Look - the hardest thing to get in the NBA are these foundation horses you can build your team around. We have two of them now. The cost was extremely high - but let's be real - we sacrificed the last two entire seasons to bring multiple stars in here.

We have two of the top 12 stars in the league for the next 4-5 years. We have a top, gritty, championship PG in Billups. We have a young top rookie in Fields. We have a solid bench.

We are not that far away from being contenders.

Anyone who doesn't realize we are closer to being contenders with Melo and Billups in the fold is wrong. Brewer may well prove to be on the level of Chandler, should we keep him.

It hurts to lose Ray and Gallo. It hurts a lot. But this is a good trade for the Knicks.

We are legit contenders now, or extremely close to it.

knicks killed their future again.. it will be great to watch our kids turn into great players elsewhere... this trade stinks.. we overpaid.. no other way to look at it..

we have a 2011 draft pick, a 2013 draft pick... also we have two 27yr old superstars starting for us for the next five years. that's the future.

Killing your future with just Stephon Marbury to show for it, or Steph and Eddy Curry is a lot different than having Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony in their prime. We will see. We definitely overpaid, but I don't believe we are screwed. With the right moves we will be a title contender.

Agreed, thanks for the link.

Key quote from JVG for me: "The hardest thing to get, almost impossible, is a superstar. And the Knicks have two now... Anthony is almost unguardable from the wing."

Yes there is another way to look at it. We traded a bunch of so so players for a top 12 player and an All Star Player. Who is in his prime and has at least 8 years left. Wilson Chandler is an ok player, and Corey Brewer has a chance to fill a more important role on the Knicks. Danillo is AT BEST a good player, but he will NEVER reach Carmelo status. Mosgov is a BACKUP center, who is NOT a better player than Shelden Williams. Randloph could not get minutes. ONE future 1st rounder. Raymond Felton is NOT better than Chauncy Billups.

Sorry, this trade is GREAT and everyone over reacting is not looking at this rationally.

i really don't think it's clear that we overpaid.

it's quite debatable.

like nixluva pointed out, we no longer need to wonder if gallo or wilson would show up. with melo that ain't happening.

now defensively, yes, we aren't any better, but our o, should be better.

we HAD to give up wilson if we wanted melo in free agency.

but we know he wanted to get paid, and would have gone to the nets.

meanwhile, you know amar'e is a risk, so we need ready to play guys who we know will be consistently top players as soon as possible. it wasn't clear that gallo, wilson, or mozgov would be that.

we might have had to give up gallo after next season, and felton too, if we wanted one of the big pg's.

felton was hurting us after a great start to the year, with his poor outside shooting.

that was a concern for me, and we were a .500 team. not a contender, or even legit potential contender with a few tweaks.

billups deal expires next year, and if things go well, we can add one of the major stars available.

this is easily the best 1-2 combo we have had since the 70's title teams.

People forget we were on a downward trend also..Wouldn't have been surprised to end up below 500 by season's end the way the team looked. After a great start felton, Gallo & Chandler were playing below average ball in my opinion.
