Basically if they dont make any kind of move, McGrady doesn't play, they don't get another useful piece for their playoff run, McGrady walks, and Houston still doesn't have the capspace to land a max guy. So its not like they are playing with a lot of cards here. If they can get one or two useful, non-long term dollar pieces for McGrady to help their playoff run that is all they can ask for at this point. If they get a pick or at least one youngster out of it, they came out like bandits. To get Jordan Hill, a pick, a swap of picks and 2 pieces to potentially help their playoff run is a coup.

excellent post des, you are 100% right about the rockets making out in the trade. it does seem excessive for sure and im pretty sure donnie bargaining against himself.

it's funny, while i'm against the logistics of the trade (it seems like an awful lot to give up for a guy the team doesn't want) i'm still fine with the outcome if it brings us 2 worth max FA - we shouldn't have to give all that up though.

so it's an excellent post when DES makes these points, but not when i make them... thanks a lot douchebag

well you basically made fun of everyone who was countering your points, so why would i give you props?

Wade & LeBron decide to come here, which guy becomes the Alpha Dog? I hope it turns into Kobe-Shaq 2.0 with lots of beefing in interviews!

we'll just have to wait and see. but i don't think dlee gets anywhere near max dollars. he'll get 6yrs $65-70M - which means a starting salary of $8-9M. that means we can add a max guy at $16-17M and still have $8-9M to sign another guy. does memphis match on a 5yr $60M offer to Gay? does felton take $7M a year from us to be our PG? there are a lot of options and flexibility that come with having $32-35 million in cap room.

if we get ONE of the big big guys (Bron or Wade) - the rest of the league will be knocking on our door to see if they can come here.

nyk, I don't think you will find anyone against this trade if James and Wade are in Knick uniforms at the beginning of the season. But we have to stay in the here and now and that doesn't seem reasonable at all. If you are the President of an organization you can't run it like you are playing a game. There have to be reasonable alternatives that make sense.

here's the quote that matters from the hahn article.

will you prattering ninnies be complaining if we get bron and wade on july 1? no. no you will not.

I am not sure Bron would leave Cleveland without Amare, if the Cavs add Amare there is no way that he leaves in my opinion. I don't think Wade is leaving. Miami has a great climate, night life and no state income tax. I think Bosh goes to Miami. Just wondering, I think the taxes are quite a bit harsher in Canada on NBA players but I don't remember hearing about this for awhile, are they higher?

lebron james wants to be a global icon. that will not happen in cleveland because it is cleveland. both lebron and wade know the history of the game - the '73 knicks are far more legendary than the '06 heat because the '73 knicks played in new york city at madison square garden. it's been a long, horrible ride for this franchise, but it is still one of the glamour franchises in this league. whoever brings it back to glory will be immortal in this city - which happens to be the most important city in the world (sorry, but it's true - why do you think everyone loves to hate it?). if you don't think bron and wade know this, i don't think you are giving them enough credit.

i think we will get one of them this summer, if not both. wade doesn't seem too pleased in miami. lebron keeps saying he is going to "test the waters" in free agency - even if they get amar'e.

taxes won't matter at all if they come to new york and set the world on fire. they will be the biggest names in all of sports. they know this. one of them is coming. and donnie is doing the work to ensure the ability to allow both of them to come. or bosh. and people are complaining about this? really?

I have to disagree about LeBron needing NY to be a global icon. Jordan was that guy in Chicago. If LeBron wins a championship inCleveland he imediately becomes that guy withoug going anywhere. LeBron is an Ohio guy. I don't think his dream is to win a championship in NY. I think he grew up and was influenced by Jordan and his popularity. If he wants to emulate someone I think it will be Jordan and the 90's Bulls before it is the 73 Knicks.

...that must be why he wears a yankees hat all the time. because he loves cleveland so much.

Of course no one will argue with Bron/Wade, but you've got to do better in the bargaining process IMO. Isiah failed in this so many times and left use in the precarious position we are in today (years of sucktitude without all the draft picks we should've rightfully had).

will you prattering ninnies be complaining if WHEN we get bron and wade on july 1? no. no you will not.

unless you're 100% positive that this is going to happen then it's a dumb trade any way you wanna look at it.

any way you want to look at it? what if the way i want to look at it is that lebron james and dwyane wade are free agents in four months and if this trade goes through we have enough money to sign them both?

that doesn't seem remotely dumb to me. it seems pretty darn smart.

it's dumb w/o a guarantee... if those guys don't sign here then you're royally ****ed for the next decade & i'm not even exaggerating... we've already seen how trades like this have ****ed out franchise in past dealings & u want to keep repeating these types of moves... unfreakinreal.

i would hope donnie puts lotto protection on any picks he trades. and i'll wait to see the final trade. if there is a trade at all. i just like that he's aggressively trying to create more cap room. good things will happen this summer.

he wears a Yankee cap cuz he's a Yankee fan... what's that got to do with signing w/the Knicks this summer? i'm pretty sure he can afford MLB Extra Innings package wherever he's at... don't think he's going to miss too many Yankee games anytime soon.

Just to clear up a small item. this trade is for McGrady only. I have not heard of a sign and trade for Lebron in this report. From reading some of the posts and/or blogs, it sounds lot like Lebron is being traded along with McGrady.

All you hear is rumors and everybody gets worked up!!

Would love to make this deal happen!!.... McGrady is a major upgrade in talent!

Doubt the Don gives up picks too easily!!...... Hope not but his history says he doesn't
surrender picks in trades.

If we trade both Hill and Fishlips that's an extra 9 million off books... So 34 million
in cap space ..... And first refusal on T-Mac (probably on the cheap)

Lebron and Bosh and resign T-Mac??

With Gallo too???

I like the sounds of that!!!

KNICKS on the way UP!!!

donnie has been pretty responsible. irresponsible would have been lavishing a 4yr $20M contract on ramon sessions like a bunch of guys wanted to do over the summer.

i really don't think it's irresponsible. i think it's a coup if he can create the cap space necessary to sign two max free agents. they've already sacrificed a lot going all in on 2010 - they went all in the second they traded jamal and ZBO. if they have to ditch a draft pick in 2012 to ensure the ability to sign two max free agents when some of the biggest stars in the game are coming on the market... i think it's a good gamble. yes, of course it's a gamble. but i think it's a good one.

Too true, Windsor. It's just the words "Jared Jeffries' contract" evoke so much anticipation and imagination!

I think it's time for a Jared Jeffries appreciation thread.

Agreed, it would be a coup If it was just the 2012 pick. But it's more than that.

for everyone who thinks lebron is definitely staying in cleveland - ask yourself this - why is the cleveland front office trying so desperately to get a sidekick for lebron? we've heard amar'e. we've heard jamison. troy murhphy. now corey maggette. that SMACKS of desperation.

if they're so comfortable with the idea that of course lebron will stay, why are they trying so hard to tinker with a 43-11 team?

why?

because they are nervous about july 1. because they know it's no done deal that he stays. and unless they can get him a major sidekick at the deadline, they don't have the ability to get him one this summer.
