The Yankeee hate that's flying around is so ridiculous it's funny. It's basically the same talking points as always when the Yankees sign a player but there's 2 points that none of the haters mention:

1) The Yankees dropped $88 million off their payroll after last season

2) The Yankees payroll is still $20 million lower than what it was last season even after signing Texeira, Sabathia and Burnett.

I don't give any credence to anything written or said about the Yankees offseason unless those things are mentioned. It's basic information that anyone with half a clue would know and is purposely left out to promulgate the hysteria that the Yankees are ruining baseball. I won't even get into how much money every team in baseball makes, directly and indirectly, from the Yankees.

Why exactly can't the Yankees replace Giambi with Texeira, Mussina and Pavano with Sabathia and Abreu with Burnett? The same people who had no problem with the Yankees payroll last season when they finished 3rd in their division are the same morons who have a problem with it this offseason even though their payroll is currently subtantially lower. The hate is ridiculous.

What does last year's salary have to do with it? They're salary was extremely high last year too. They tried to buy a championship last year (and the last several years) too; they just went about it poorly. Intelligently buying the best products you can on a playing field that isn't level is exactly what I've wanted the Yankees to do, but they certainly are trying to buy championships.

Umm, because these haters are acting as if things have changed or have gotten worse when it hasn't.

You seriously need to get off your soapbox and do some reading comprehension. I hope you're not that this tunnelvisioned when you grade your students work.

the haters will never take into account things like this because it doesn't help to support their arguments... they would like everyone to believe that the Yankees have spent all this money on top of their already bloated payroll & not consider the fact that they're simply replacing salary that's been taken off the payroll already.

yesterday ESPN was running a graphic of how the Yankees had payed out the 5 biggest contracts in baseball history & included the original contract ARod signed w/TEX as 1 of them... they refuse to acknowledge the fact that the Yankees had only actually paid $15 mil per year on that original contract because TEX had agreed to pay the Yankees $60 mil to get his contract off their books, which was a huge steal for a player of ARod's calibre... (of course after ARod opted out of that deal TEX only ended up having to pay half of that amount, but the fact remains the Yankees never paid ARod the salary they were saying they did)

Is there any chance that Manny will want to be a Yankee badly enough to accept a backloaded contract where he gets $10-15M this year and $25M for the next 2 years?

Olney's saying the Yankees are absolutely out of the bidding for Manny... but we all know Cashman's operating on stealthmode this offseason, so i guess u can never count the Yankees out.

Excellent point TMS. Texas signed him to that contract and the Yankees paid a drastically discounted rate on that contract but Red Sox loving ESPN decided to count it all against the Yankees.

There's an idiot on FOXsports.com that wrote an article bashing the Yankees after signing Sabathia and Burnett, saying that it still wasn't enough to compete with the Rays and Red Sox and how they needed to sign Texeira to make a difference. Of course at the time, everybody and his mother thought that the Red Sox were locks to sign him so it was easy to say thinking that the Yankees had no chance of signing him.

Then yesterday after word got out about the Yankees and Texeira, the same idiot writes that it still may not be good enough and it's a risky move for the Yankees because this somehow adds to the pressure to win.

The guys original Yankee bashing article was totally rebuffed when they went out and got Texeira so he had to change up his premise to continue bashing the Yankees. It's so ridiculous.

Finally, someone in baseball with a clue. From Buster Olney's blog on ESPN.com:

And they do have defenders even among the small-market teams. "They just got a luxury-tax bill of $26.9 million, didn't they?" another AL official asked rhetorically. "They always pay, don't they? The other teams cash their checks, don't they?"

"The Yankees are great for baseball, just like the Red Sox and the Cubs are great for baseball, because they generate interest and they generate money for all of us. Today, somebody is going to pick up a paper overseas and there will be something in there on the Yankees' signing of Teixeira. Do you think that would happen if there was some trade between small-market teams? People pay attention to the Yankees, and that's good for our sport."

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I'm going to chalk up the hate to baseball's right wing and sore losers. They're like the Republican right wing nuts, desperately trying to connect Obama to Blogojevich in any way they can.

is that idiot's name Steve Phillips by any chance? cuz he was saying pretty much the exact same thing on ESPN this morning.

huh? Where did they say it's gotten worse? That's a figment of your imagination. This complaining goes on every time the Yankees make a big signing possibly because the inequality is "merely" *continuing* (not necessarily worsening). It could be either or some combination of the two. I'm not sure why merely continuing inequality is such a wonderful, OK thing anyway.

As to the latter comment, why are you so intolerant of views other than your own that you'd resort to insults?

"Now consider the eight-year, $180 million contract the Yankees reportedly handed first baseman Mark Teixeira yesterday. Stack it on top of the $161 million deal signed by pitcher CC Sabathia and the (relatively) modest $82.5 million promised to A.J. Burnett and you have the most egregious display of financial irresponsibility in the history of sports."

"The Yankees have been baseball's brashest bullies on and off the field for the better part of a century, but perhaps nothing in their long history matches what they have done over the past two weeks"

Yup, just a figment of my imagination.

Who cares if the inequality is worsening or merely continuing? You seem OBSESSED with this distinction. There are qualifiers in those quotes like "perhaps" anyway but the bigger point is your more obsessed with the distinction between continuing and worsening inequality than with the inequality itself. Inequality itself is extremely frustrating; that's a natural human reaction. Maybe there's a misperception that inequality is merely staying the same rather than worsening among those on the short end of the stick but I can't blame them. I wouldn't blame a homeless person who thought poverty was growing when it was staying the same or an Iraqi civillian who thought civillian deaths were increasing when they were really staying the same either.

the winter isn't over...
according to adam the bull on wfan, a friend or guy that he knows went to orlando hudson's wedding and hudson told the guy the yanks are going to trade cano and bring him in...

i'm not sure i buy into this. they had cano lose weight this winter (he dropped 10 lbs) and they sent hitting coach kevin long down to the DR to work with him. but who knows...the yanks are gangsta's so anything's possible...i wouldn't be a big fan of this move BUT trading cano will bring back and very good young player too.

i don't buy into it either but if Cano is traded they BETTER get back top notch young pitching or pitching prospects... otherwise it's a dumb move.

I'm tired of looking at Cano to be honest.....yankees need to continue to get rid of dead dick guys like abreu, melky, cano, giambi, etc....what i mean is nonchalant guys that seem to just go up there with an "oh well" mentality....Orlando Hudson isnt the best player around but the dude can field that ball. Yanks need to shore up that defense. Cano wasn't bad....but like i said, he is just a dead dick player.

i dunno, many felt the same way about Bernie too over the years... that he was nonchalant, lacked any personality or passion for the game... but through time he proved that he was just as intense a competitor as anyone else on this team, he just wasn't as demonstrative about it... i think another guy is Matsui who gives off that same type of impression but i know during postseason play the guy has come through before in huge spots & even tho he's struggled in the more recent playoff series, i think both Matsui & Cano should be held onto this season... i like O Dawg's defense & he's a solid switch hitter but he doesn't have Cano's upside, plus he's 5 years older... defensively they're pretty much identical in terms of fielding percentage over their careers & i really like how Cano turns the DP w/that quick arm flick of his.

if we're gonna trade Cano as part of any package i really hope we get a guy like Grienke, Billingsley, Peavy, etc.... we can't give up a talent like that w/o getting back premium value or potential.
