What does Newsday — which is owned by Cablevision, which is owned along a majority of MSG & the Knicks, a publicly traded company, by the beloved Dolan family — have to say here?

BTW, I think Knicks fans should pool their resources and start buying MSG stock and turn stockholder meetings into ESPN-worthy events.

"If this trade happens," one NBA source said, "Donnie Walsh should be Executive of the Year."

LOL! how's that for towing the company line?

Nothing is imminent with the McGrady situation, mainly because the Knicks - who are owned by Cablevision, which also owns Newsday - very well could be negotiating against themselves.

for this reason alone we shouldn't be even talking about giving up those assets being rumored in this deal.

Walsh hasn't seen McGrady himself, but a Knicks representative has watched him work out recently. The team might request a follow-up to ensure he is ready to step into an NBA season that, with 31 games to go, is slipping away from the 19-32 Knicks.

does Donnie just not like scouting players for himself before deciding on whether or not to go after them? & LOL, the season isn't slipping away, it's already slipped.

LOL, this trade is really indefensible how it is written. Yet, you see the moving thresholds again from some. Jordan Hill, more 1st round picks just to get $6 million off the cap. Sure why not? Just because Donnie is pulling the strings. What happen to how you can't judge Hill yet when it came to comparing him to Jennings? Now he is roadkill and never really that good because Donnie is ready to use him as a filler.

That's not good enough to make a run?

LeBron, the 2nd Max guy and Wilson are playing 90% of the minutes for their positions if they're here next year. How much depth do we need to fill the other two slots and the 5 minutes that those guys aren't playing?

Gimme a break. Don't get scared of the plan when we're this close to making it happen.

how is it close to happening? all walsh can do is create room. if FA's choose to remain or go elsewhere, whats the plan b? lock in to lower tier FA's and have fun being a 1 and done playoff team for years or worse? i think the issue folks have is there is no plan b visible... you fail to sign the top guys, you leveraged quite a bit for nothing.

OK. Let's say we stay pat.
We sign Lee and wait for some top FA to come. They don't.
We are not going for second tier guys and get some one year renters again. We wait another year and try again with sh..t load of cap space.
We will also have a huge chance to be in the lottery.
Does it look like a plan... for MSG to lose 20-30 millions next year?

we own picks in that route, still have cap space. no prob, as you and others (me included) have said, this team hasnt done anything in a long time. they leverage all that and fail to land anyone plus we no longer have some of the picks? they have to consider the possibility that lbj doesnt sign here and what the game plan is gonna be in that case. if this deal goes down, and lbj+1 signs, no one will care for sure.

dude, ur saying this like it's a guarantee that Lebron & Wade are coming here this summer if we pull this off? how do u know what their plans are when they don't even know themselves?

Don't you have to give yourself a shot at it? Why is Kobe still not signing his extension? There is some odd stuff going on out there with the RedeemTeam/2010FA guys and our coach just happens to be tight with them. You gotta give yourself a shot no matter what it takes.

If it doesn't work, then we can take on expiring salary to get the picks back.

dude, i am all for giving ourselves a shot, but bending over to get butt raped is not the way to go about it... i was highly in favor of dumping Zach's contract 2 years ago & was willing to trade down 10 slots in the 1st round that year to do it... we were talking about having zero hope of landing ANYONE in 2010 & once we pulled off a deal to dump Zach, we gained the cap flexibility to sign at least 1 max guy... we now HAVE a shot at a max FA this summer... but you're now talking about giving giving away swap rights, a #8 lottery selection AND a 2012 1st round pick... that's just ridiculously stupid, i'm sorry but there's no way u can justify a trade like that unless u have an absolute GUARANTEE that both Lebron & Wade will sign here this summer if we make this trade.

Walsh reportedly pushing deal for McGrady that would include Jeffries

February 15, 2010 By ALAN HAHN alan.hahn@newsday.com

Photo credit: Getty Images | The Knicks could pay a steep price in young talent, but unloading Jared Jeffries' 2010-11 cap hit in a deal for Tracy McGrady would enable Donnie Walsh to make a run at two premiere free agents this summer. (Jan. 24, 2010)

GREENBURGH, N.Y. - Though Donnie Walsh downplayed reports of recent conversations he's had with the Rockets about acquiring Tracy McGrady, it is believed that the Knicks' president is pushing a scenario that would include Jared Jeffries to clear $6.8 million off the salary cap in 2010, especially if the Rockets continue to demand that a young asset such as rookie Jordan Hill be involved in any deal.

One trade possibility promoted by Yahoo! Sports last night involved McGrady, who is in the final year of his contract, coming to the Knicks along with Joey Dorsey and Brian Cook for Jeffries, Hill and Al Harrington or Larry Hughes. The Knicks also would have to give up an unprotected first-round pick in 2012.

This report, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, makes up loose parameters of at least one deal Walsh has discussed with the Rockets. Though it would be a precarious mortgage of the future in giving up Hill, the team's 2009 lottery pick, and at least one future unprotected first-rounder, the deal would open more than $9 million in cap space for the summer foray into free agency.

As a result, the Knicks could have enough cap space to make two max contract offers to high-end free agents such as LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, who have talked about teaming up and who put on a heck of a show in Sunday's All-Star Game in Dallas. The Knicks also could eye tandems such as Joe Johnson and Chris Bosh, among other possibilities.

"If this trade happens," one NBA source said, "Donnie Walsh should be Executive of the Year."

It appears Walsh will be very busy before the deadline. On another front, the Celtics still are believed to have great interest in acquiring Nate Robinson.

Nothing is imminent with the McGrady situation, mainly because the Knicks - who are owned by Cablevision, which also owns Newsday - very well could be negotiating against themselves. If a trade happens, it likely won't transpire until right before Thursday's 3 p.m. deadline, and it will be up to Rockets general manager Daryl Morey to pull the trigger. He still might be more inclined to keep McGrady on the payroll the rest of the season.

Apparently, McGrady is anticipating a future in New York. According to a Houston TV station citing sources close to the exiled Rocket, he expects something will be done with the Knicks by "midweek."

Walsh said after practice yesterday, "I'm not going to get into any discussions about trades. There's always a lot of conversations. No sense getting into it. I read things that people write, and some of it I've never seen before or heard before, so it makes no sense getting into it. If something happens, we'll tell you.''

Walsh hasn't seen McGrady himself, but a Knicks representative has watched him work out recently. The team might request a follow-up to ensure he is ready to step into an NBA season that, with 31 games to go, is slipping away from the 19-32 Knicks.

Eddy too? Definitely Executive of the Year.

Either Eddy or Jeffries are crazy hard to trade, not just because they're overpaid, or terrible, but they also have... duh duh duh... trade kickers. Its the herpes of the NBA trade world.

Trading them will require anything we can give the other team(s).

That's just the way it is. Sorry.

Eddy, Fishlips, Jordan & a future #1 for T-Mac, Lowry & Dorsey works under the cap & i might consider a deal like that... we'd be gaining $22 million in cap space if u make a deal like that which is a lot more significant than the one that's being rumored now... Dorsey can be a nice piece even tho he's raw... kid is a tenacious rebounder & likes to bang down low, so giving up a future pick for him is not as big of a concern for me... the thing i don't agree with is the swapping of picks in 2011 & throwing in Jordan Hill just to get rid of Fishlips' contract... they need to take back Curry's deal too & also throw us back Kyle Lowry for this deal to even be considerable.

LOL... there were plenty of people around here saying MDA was doing the right thing by playing Fishlips 35+ a night because he was miraculously raising his trade value... now we're talking about having to throw in 3 potential lottery picks to move him... what a freakin' waste of time playing Fishlips this season... shoulda just been developing Jordan Hill from the very beginning, then maybe we'd be talking about just using Jordan Hill as an asset to dump both Fishlips & Curry's worthless butts off this team

this whole deal seems awful... the rumors and guessing that some of this is to help revive a sinking season??? what the flip? multiple picks, the 2012 unprotected? all will be forgiven if it somehow turns into lbj+1. if not, i guess walsh just walks away: washed his hands, and sealed our fates...

Amare is not worth 3 potential lottery picks and McGrady is? Looking at it the other way, Is trading JJ worth 3 potential lottery picks?
I just wonder what would be the price for Lebron if this is the market for McGrady.

Good point. But since we are now just using Hill as a filler what does that even matter anymore. All this shows me is that beyond getting rid of contracts there really isn't any substantial plan other than hoping for the best.

i just bolded that myself in the post above you crzy.. i don't like the idea of giving up unprotected picks, but we won't know the full fruits of this trade until the FA period is over and done with.

if we get two of the bigtime FA this was a great deal, if we get no one, believe me no one will be calling me a walsh homer anymore.
