Billups expires the same time as Felton. Knicks are only getting a better PG.

Is Billups 40? I thought he was 50. Thanks for the update.

Which is the point...He doesn't command as all star salary but gets the job done...The extra money could sure up the bench...

You need to understand that Felton was never a part of the Knicks' long term plans.

NY Times "Carmelo Anthony is informing those close to him that he will not sign a contract extension if he is traded to the Nets, according to a person aware of Anthony’s preference."

How in the world could we trade 3 of 4 of our top players for Melo in those conditions ?

Give Denver Curry + Chandler or Gallo + a couple of picks and that's it. Denver will have to choose between that deal or keeping Melo for the end of the season

James Dolan has a history of bidding against himself.

this is true. but with the way you see the impatient fanbase handle these situations, you can almost see why.

this is going to be historic if it happens. a team with cap space this offseason is going to trade valuable assets to acquire a player who can become a free agent this offseason.

Only in NY If not for Dolan, I believe we would've taken a very principled approach to this, but once Dolan got involved, all of that was out the window. It's what other GM's hope for. Hold up things long enough and Dolan will get impatient and give up the farm. Donnie had been trying to do the best he could, but there's no escaping Dolan. I've just learned to accept it as the way things are. There's nothing we can do.

Let me be clear, I want Melo on the Knicks. I'm just afraid that we're going to lose a lot at the poker table... There's a great deal to be made, it's a great negociation to follow, and a wonderful opportunity for us... the skates are high, we can't screw up by being impatient or fearful. I trust Donnie, I am afraid of Dolan !

One last thing, I think that will go down to the last hour... can't see it happen over the weekend.

Billups is 34 and is a much bigger cap hit for the Knicks. I don't think there is anyway he can play the minutes Felton plays.

As long as Miami has Lebron/Wade and LA has Pau/Kobe (and I could list some others too) and we're going with Amare/Melo, we're choosing a path that *from the start* has a 0% chance of working. Our top 2 would be very good players but vastly inferior to those duos. And it's not like we'd have a vastly superior supporting cast to compensate or many years to build one (given Amare's age). Note that I wasn't advocating just waiting for Deron or Howard in that other thread either. I talked a lot about the draft.

The only team that won a championship by building through the draft in the last 10 years was San Antonio and they had to get lucky enough to draft Tim Duncan. Even Tony parker is just another good PG without them getting Tim Duncan. Building through the draft is a start but you have to sign/trade for players like Shaq, Rasheed, Garnett, Pau Gasol etc.

I'm not going to start debating Lebron/Wade vs. Amare/Melo until we see them in action a few times.

Again. The fact that Stat will have another true all star to play with is so much more important than who will be our PG (Felton or Billups).

And if you ask D'antoni who he would like to be our starting PG, he'll say Billups because he can shoot the long ball.

Denver knows that Dolan's involvement -- with Isiah in shadows -- has undermined Donnie Walsh and Nuggs can keep pushing for more out of NY

Rebuilding through the draft is only one of the options I mentioned. However, you're wrong anyway. The Lakers got Kobe through the draft (by trading for him)--and trading for draft picks is one of the methods I discussed in that thread. The Heat and Celtics drafted both drafted the players who were their finals MVPs too. It's actually pretty rare for the top player on an NBA championship team to have been been acquired through any means other than the draft because championship level franchise players are almost never available via free agency or trade. If you need more time to think about whether Amare/Melo are on the same level as a Lebron/Wade combo, I don't know what to think. Lebron and Wade are outstanding two-way players. Amare and Melo will never be credited with that.
