"Donnie Walsh, I love you like a grandfather, but you're wrong on this D'Antoni system," (Reggie) Miller said. "He is a nice guy but it is New York City, and I think Mark Jackson - I'm biased because he's a good friend of mine - but I think he would have been perfect for that situation, I think it was the wrong call at the wrong time."

there is something to be said about a former knick, who's never coached before, show a hunger to not only prove to everyone he can be a good coach, but also help rebuild the franchise he helped rebuild 20 years ago. makes for a good story.

not to say d'antoni won't rebuild the team either...but jackson may have gotten a little more rope and possibly a little more support.

I just got to know when Jax became this amazing coaching commodity. Noone talked about him last year and now he is a better candidate than coaches with.650 win percentages that have gone to the WC finals at least once in there careers.

"I don't think anything's off the table," D'Antoni said. "You turn over every stone on how to make the team better. But that may not happen. You may have to win with the way it is. I'm comfortable with that." D'Antoni called the roster "mixed, it will take some work to get them unraveled. But they're talented basketball players."

The place was dead," Donnie Walsh said. "We gotta wake it up. And I feel good about the guy walking in the door to help us do that."

"Really, everyone has a desire to get this thing back on the right track," he added. "That's one of the big reasons why I came here. Being in Italy all those years and Italian fans and media have so much passion for their teams. Right or wrong, they have passion. It's the same with New York. You can't find that energy anywhere else."

“I don’t want to go with conventional thinking,” D’Antoni said Thursday. “I don’t care if it’s always been done this way. Now, that might be the right way to do it. But that’s not the reason to do it.”

Rest assured that Mike D’Antoni does not expect to lose much in New York, despite every justifiable bit of skepticism coming from every corner of the N.B.A. universe. Surely, he is just being contrary. Dan D’Antoni has another theory.

“Maybe that’s just the excitement of seeing a challenge,” he said. “Some people like to climb a mountain. Some people like to sit down and look at it.”
