What's so bad about pointing out the obvious--some people got the hell out of NO before all hell broke loose, made it to Texas--now they have a new opportunity. Oh no, Barbara Bush is a racist. You take the slight chuckling thing as if she is mocking them, maybe she's actually happy for them, oh wait, her last name is Bush, she must be evil.

[Edited by - Knight on 09-05-2005 9:23 PM]

Barbara Bush and you obviously lack the sensitivity/humanity to appreciate what these people have experienced & lost.

Many of them lost family members, relatives, friends, properties, jobs, and HOME where they grew up andlived their lives. What they have experienced/felt and will have to go through is unimaginable.

Saying that they are better off now evacuating at places like Astrodome shows your true color.
And man, it ain't pretty.

I hate to say this but I would bet the Astrodome is alot cleaner and alot safer than where many of the "refugees" came from. Unfortunately.

But it isn't HOME! Capish? Stop being a snob.

I was about to point out the same thing. Well put, Oak.

Hey Marv, having to deal with things like this, is what getting a "cold chill" is really about.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

I know a lot of you probably don't like Bill O'riley but I think the guy deals in fact, and I really believes he is on the money a lot of the time..

He said after the research he came up with this:

1) The Lousiana govt was neglegent not having the LA national guard ready and set to get to NO. This would have allowed NO to maintain order, deliver supplies and establish some sense of order.

2) the mayor of NO nagin lost control and was not prepared, he had the superdome set up as a last resort refuge and didn't have supplies and food over there.

3) after bush found out that the mayor of NO lost control and that the louisanna govt didn't respond like they should have, bush should of had homeland security come right in and take care of it. He said bush dropped the ball on this one.

4) he also said barbera bush comments were stupid, just stupid. He said she has been wealthy too long..LOL!!

5) he places blame on the mayor, local govt especially and bush for being 24 hours too late.

all I am saying is that I think it comes down to this. Lack of preparation on the part of NO and lack of support from the state govt, blanco deservers a lot of the blame. Bush was not the only administration to deny the 27 billion to sure up the NO levies. The clinton admin. also denied it... So please stop with all the racial crap, don't let these entertainers rile you up, they are uninformed and irresponsible right now.... If anything it was incompetency, feet dragging, and just a flat out lack of performance on many levels....

Lets dig in and help these people....

No, not unless she was truly happy for them.
Happy enough for them being safe or having a clean place (once again which is not possible when you are sharing a stadium with a 1000 hungry or sick people) and make a sarcastic comment about it? You really think anyone that has lost a house would be happy with a 4 feet by 4 feet tent? Seems like you are just as out of touch as her.

I don't think she expects them to live in the Astrodome their whole lives. She wasn't being sarcastic. She's not addressing the people who lost homes and had a stable life in NO.

[Edited by - Knight on 09-05-2005 9:51 PM]

First off, get in touch with the living conditions in new orleans. I have plenty of family members who lived in houses and are STILL considered all but poor. Just because a person lives in a house does not mean that the house is like a house here in the suburbs somewhere. Find out what some of the houses are worth. And even still, many people are connected to their houses and neighborhoods. Some have had houses passed down from great-grandparents over time. With that said.....They lost their houses, pictures of relatives, letters etc. My mother was in the hurricane Camille in the 60's where the entire 9th ward was submerged. I have never in my life seen a picture of my mother as child or a teenage because the 9th ended up being totally swallowed and all was lost. My grandfather died before I was born. Never seen a picture of him. A lot comes with LOSING EVERYTHING.

She was addressing 'victims'. Period. There is NOTHING funny about what has transpired. Nothing.

Great points. Barbara Bush is an Idiot and we now know where her son gets it from. This is a tragedy anyway you slice it. Yes there may be a silver lining in this for a few people, but that is way down the road and remains to be seen. To talk about that possibility at this point is insensitive. To laugh about it is sheer stupidity.

O'Reilly deals in spin, in this case, the White House's spin, not facts:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/03/AR2005090301680_pf.html

Tens of thousands of people spent a fifth day awaiting evacuation from this ruined city, as Bush administration officials blamed state and local authorities for what leaders at all levels have called a failure of the country's emergency management....As of Saturday, [Louisiana governor Kathleen] Blanco still had not declared a state of emergency, [a] senior Bush official said.

http://gov.louisiana.gov/Press_Release_detail.asp?id=973

August 26: Blanco declares a state level state of emergency.

http://gov.louisiana.gov/Press_Release_detail.asp?id=976

August 27: Blanco asks the president to declare a federal state of emergency for the state of Louisiana.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/08/20050827-1.html

August 27: Bush declares a federal state of emergency for Louisiana.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2002472774_mayfield05.html

We know from National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield that FEMA Director Brown and DHS Secretary Chertoff both received electronic briefings on Katrina's likely destructive potential before the storm hit. A knowledgable source suggests asking who else listened in on those pre-landfall briefings.

You lost me at hello.

Bill O'Reilly is a spin doctor, not an informed news source. He works on Fox. He is an entertainer.

Bill O'Reilly may have come to conclusions about his own research, but I want to see his sources and reasoning behind it. The list he proposes MAY be true, but without a lot of backup, it's nothing.

actually o'riley's show is called the no -spin zone. Hey, Barbara Bush was wrong to try to find a silver lining but I'm just giving you the other side--so many of you guys are so eager and willing to label people as racist, heartless, and almost downright evil. To me, that's what those kind of people do. Nobody here is any of those things, but it bothers me to stand by and watch those kind of strong accusations being thrown about as if you are talking about the color of someone's hair.

personally I hate Bush with a passion. While he spent the Vietnam war in the NG flying around Texas 2 of my close friends with little ones are shooting arabs and they 2 are NGuardsman.

I only say this because even I think that blaming Bush or anyone is totally premature at this point. Sometime an investigation will be forth coming and people will analize the facts and determine who failed to respond in time and why.

Its just too early to place blame on anyone, nobody has all the facts.

However a very large portion of our NG is in Iraq, as well as their vehicles; choppers, amphibious vehicles and the like. This is a result of GWs foreign policy and there is no way you cant tell me it hasnt hurt our ability to react to Katrina.

Nobody in their right mind can blame the Bush admin for 9/11 or the Katrina aftermath disfunction. However those 2 things as well as the war in Iraq represent 3 times his administration has failed to react to intellegence. What will be the 4th?

Couldn't the Clinton administration have captured Usama and didn't they also believe Iraq had forbidden weapons?

Bill O'Reily is the king of taking quotes out of context and making them mean something other than what it was intended to mean. Then he puts it in a context to drive a point that he himself believes to be the truth. That's called spin. O'Reily has been exposed PLENTY of times because of this.

I remember one time he was being exposed.....i forget on what show, but give me a minute i'll remember.....and they showed a clip of the O'Reily tv show where O'Reily used a clip of the president and then he used another clip of someone he was at odds with. O'Reily EDITED both clips and took out very important statements made by both people. On the president's behalf, O'reily took out the things that the president said that was plain idiotic. As far as the 'foe' (who I belive was a Democratic Senator) O'Reily took out all facts that made sense. He edited it to the point where the guy's statments were jumbled up and ridiculous. It was edited just so that O'Reily could use them out of context. After they showed this, they actually showed the two original clips of the two men speaking unedited. The places that O'Reily had cut the tape.....Unbelievable!

just for clarification, it's O'Reilly, not O'Riley, unless you are talking about ex-Knicks coach Pat Riley and wish he was Irish.

If I told you I read the NY Times and LA Times every day and say that they both defend bush and hold his feet to the fire and think both are very fair, would my argument for holding the LA/NY Times papers in high regards make you think they are very fair? Kinda the same way with your argument with O'Reilly.

Every single person and organization has a slant on something. We all use facts to create our opinion, but it doesn't mean we are right or wrong or more informed. Someone in this thread quoted that the employment rate was/has been increasing over the past few years. That's nice, but that's not the whole picture. Poverty has also gone up. Average income has DECLINED (adjusted for inflation). The gap between the high income and low-income families has increased. So, was there spin in the original statement? No, it was factually correct. Was there spin in the overall argument about the job Bush has done with our overall economy? Probable.

Does O'Reilly lie? Not purposely. Does he spin for his own opinion? Probably. Does he always tell the full picture? Probably not. Same with Michael Moore. Same with lots of under informed newspaper articles.
