Rather than Abreu, how about Milton Bradley? He just declined arbitration so he will be free. He was one of the best hitters in the AL last year and is much younger...

Bradley's got all kinds of issues tho, i don't think the Yanks would be interested... he's definitely talented & can put up numbers, but he's a loose cannon who can't control his temper... don't think he'd go off well w/the NY media or the fans.

He's been fine lately though. If he can hit here we'll tolerate him....Personally Bobby Abreu's lacksadaisacal(sp?) approach at times bothers me more.

btw, the same logic is being used in Andy Pettitte's case also... i think the Yankees are hoping he'll accept a 1-2 year deal at a lower rate the same way they handled Moose's contract negotiation a couple years ago before he signed his last extension.

i agree w/ur opinion on Abreu... he's never seemed like a "gamer" to me, if u know what i mean... also don't want that slackadaisical approach to wear off on Cano or Melky either & we all know they both look up to Bobby.

i hope we hear something soon cuz we can't be replacing Bobby & Jason G w/Nady & Swisher in the lineup & hope to contend.

at this point i'm almost hoping that CC doesn't accept the Yankees' offer so we can go hard after Mark Tex & another pitcher like Derek Lowe... i think those 2 guys would fit the Yankees' team perfectly & both would have the right mindset to succeed in NY, something i'm not so sure CC is well suited for at this point... his obvious reluctance to play here sets off all kinds of red flags in my book... i don't want no ***** posers on this team... i want guys who aren't afraid of stepping up to any challenge & facing it head on... that's the type of mentality u need to succeed in this media market.

if we land Mark Tex on an 8 year deal at around $21 mil per, we would still have more than enough to bring back Andy P on a lesser deal & pay Lowe the contract he's looking for (~$15 mil per over 4)... that would solve our issues both in our lineup & in our starting rotation... i'll go to war w/a rotation of Wang, Lowe, Joba, Pettitte & either Hughes or Aceves to start next season, & maybe u can work some other minor deals before the start of Spring Training to add some depth to the rotation, or u can see who's leftover from the other 2nd tier guys like Perez, Garland, Sheets, Wolf, etc. & see what u can work in terms of other FA signings to add some depth.

THE HELL WITH YOU CC! if you don't want the Yankees' money, stay on the West Coast & collect ur money away from those scary old AL East hitters! if u'r afraid to face them ur not cut out for NY to begin with.

That's not bad reasoning actually. If we added Lowe and Tex, that would be good. I definitely don't want Hughes starting 20% of our games, though. We still need to add more offense and pitching but Lowe and Tex would be a very good start.

There is nothing that says Lowe won't goto NYY, but his 1st choice is BOS. Supposedly, if the yanks miss on CC, they will be going after Lowe, Perez, and Wolf(all 3).

I give CC 2 until midnight tomorrow to decide whether or not he wants to take the best offer by far and come to NY. If not I want to see the Yankees go after Texeira ($20M/8yrs), Manny($25M/3yrs), Lowe($15M/4yrs), Sheets($10M plus incentives to $15M/2yrs) and Pettitte ($12M/1yr). Then I want to see the Yankees trade Matsui to the Giants for Randy Winn.

Personally I'm not a huge believer in Derek Lowe- he was nearing disaster territory in his last few years in Boston (last time he was in the AL) and revived himself in the best pitchers park in baseball (Dodger Stadium). I'd rather take a spin on Burnett.

I'm also probably the only one out there that would rather keep trying with Hughes, Kennedy and the other guys like Aceves and Coke on the 4/5 spot rather that throw a huge contract at an inconsistent middle tier pitcher. I think we do need to sign at least one vet (Pettitte or a Pettitte equivalent).

What Boras wants and what the market will bear are 2 completely different things.

Tex will be lucky to get $20M per for 10years. I can see him signing a contract for $22-23M for 8. Manny will get more per year.

Burnett stayed healthier but he didn't pitch any better last year. He just got more run support. His ERA last year was actually above his career ERA.

If we were on a tight budget I'd do that but since we're not a see no reason to. Hughes and Kennedy F'd our season last year. Someone will probably get injured and one of them--whoever is doing the best in the minors--will get a chance again for a stretch next year. They're opening up a huge, expensive stadium--they're not gonna have 60% of their starting lineup (Joba, Hughes, and Kennedy) be a bunch of kids. If Hughes and Kennedy pitch anything like they did last year, you have any idea how HUGE the cost will be for the Steinbrenners? It's enough that you'd be out of a job awfully quickly. You want ro risk your job on these kids?

I don't think you're risking your job by giving starting jobs to Joba or Hughes. They both have tremendous upsides and are still on 22 years old. On the contrary, you're risking your job if you don't develop young pitchers. I'm not giving up on Kennedy either, he can be a serviceable bottom of the rotation guy.

People who have given up on Hughes are nuts. Last year when he came back from the broken rib, he was struggling to throw 92. Now after he's been given the chance to heal, he's been hitting 95 regularly in the Arizona Fall League. Obviously he has to prove that he's not an injury waiting to happen but when healthy he has the potential to be a top of the rotation guy.

As the Dodgers try to resolve their infield, they are again talking to the Yankees about a trade for second baseman Robinson Cano. The teams have resumed their discussions about Cano at the winter meetings, according to one source.

The Dodgers also are interested in Yankees center fielder Melky Cabrera, and the Yankees likely would want outfielder Matt Kemp and pitching in return. The Dodgers' interest in Cabrera is a sign that they might not be confident of Andruw Jones making a strong return in 2009. The Dodgers also need to find a match for Juan Pierre, who has requested a trade.

Personally I would love this deal. Kemp can play any of the outfield positions, including CF, which is where I'm assuming where he will play if this trade goes down. Kemp is young (he's only 24) has a good bat, he will be a consistent .300 hitter, has 30hr power and has a evovling eye at the plate (his walk total rose nearly 30 last year.)

If we are giving up Cano, this is the kind of guy I was expecting to get in return, so I would be very satisfied with this type of deal. If this deal goes through, I would instantly send Orlando Hudson a contract offer and I think with those 2 deals combined we'd be upgrading our offense and defense in a good way.

I did not say I gave up on him. I just said I'm not risking my job on him. He'll get his chance as a replacement starter. And I'm not saying don't develop them either. I'd be happy to give him small chances and give him bigger chances upon earning them. No free rides though. Pettitte's probably not gonna be around the year after this year and there will be an open spot in the starting rotation.
