Yawn on Rotten. Bigger fish to fry near trade deadline. Knicks have plenty of averagness at guard spots, no need to add another

Disagree! We don't have a guard like Wroten. He's still a kid and a bit raw but his talent would be worth adding to the mix and developed with our other young players. Plus he's cheap!

Wroten is dramatically better at pushing and scoring at the rim! We need that.

someone else in the thread said this and I am too lazy to look it up:

Philly, the worst team in the league, cut their least valuable player Wroten, who is a PG, to sign a PG who they cut last year and was at the end of PG rotation but playing and losing for the Pelicans. Ish, who is decent but nothing more than a backup PG, has lifted Philly by being a slasher, PnR guy who gets to the rim. Wroten, another slasher PG type, who can't shoot from the outside, couldn't fill this role, on the worst team in the NBA who have bigs galore to PnR with or slash and dish with.

And he would help the Knicks with their Triangle?

Earlier in the season I advocated trying to get Ish Smith from the Pelicans. You could've said the same thing about him back then - cut by Philly, languishing on the bench in New Orleans. Sometimes it's about opportunity.

But at this point I trust Phil to know what he wants for this roster. And I trust he's long-range planning a little bit, too. Last night someone pointed out that the Knicks got something like 86 points from their top four front court guys - Melo 30, Rolo 22, DWill 18, KP 16. Afflalo is a scorer, too. I don't think Phil wants scoring from the PG - just a guy who moves the ball and sets up the offense. Jose is pretty good at that role - it'd just be nice if he could drive to the rim ocassionally and also defend anything. But in terms of setting up the offense, he's been great.

That's why I covet Conley for this squad - I think he could lead the offense like Jose, but also defend much better.

from the wroten highlights to the jimmer highlights, you can kind of see the difference....jimmer can actually shoot as well as penetrate inside

I would rather try out this Erick Green guy 1st. He has looked really good every time I have seen him. If the Erick Green signing does not workout then I would try Jimmer next.

His FT shooting would actually be my biggest worry with him. We're a really good FT shooting team and our FT shooting is a big reason why we win some games with last night being on of them.

But there 12 pages explaining why Wroten would be a good pick up with video.....

You go buy what happens this year you are missing the whole thing. Last season Wroten was putting up the same numbers Ish is putting up before he got hurt. I aid that more than one in this thread.

Bottom line with this is, he won't be good enough for anyone unless he comes in and dominates then everyone can jump on the wagon the same way they have for just about every player Phil has picked up so far

I don't see the problem with taking a look at him!!! This is how people viewed Shved last year before they saw him in our system! You can't compare the roles! In the triangle a guy like Gallo with limited PG skills can have a role. IMO Wroten is taller, quicker, with better breakdown and finishing ability than any guard on the team! It's not just about right now either! Wroten is only 22!

this is my thinking as well. I admit i haven't followed Wroten (and respect many of the posters who are advocating for him), but am suspicious of finding offensive talent on the trash pile. I think (hope?) it's more probable we find a pg who can help on D. Someone with a decent enough handle on offense but who can stop a hot guard on the other team for a bit. (Honestly in those times you can play Melo as the point forward if need be, and hope the other pg has enough skills to score a little if he's ignored)

you know what else was weird about last night and something that Phil definitely doesn't like: ZERO rebounds from the starting guards. They played something like 75 minutes and not one board -- sheesh you would think the ball would find them by accident a couple of times.

I like Conley's game. It will come down to price. I expect frugality from Phil at the pg spot.

I think Phil is done with Plug and Play and see what happens mode. This is about targeting players that have a certain IQ, locker room temperament, team-first mentality, and talent that fit the culture and triangle. Also, I would think there is a bit of a tilt towards long term fit. There will always be exceptions.

Tell me about Wroten bball IQ, lockerroom guy, team-first mentality and how he would fit into the Triangle and/or would be a good long term fit for team?

If JR Smith were available for minimum would you put him on team? Phil just gave that guy away.

Tell me that Wroten is a high character guy.

You make good points. I would agree that this could be the big reason Phil hasn't pulled the trigger on anyone. I guess he's not looking for another young talent that needs development. I personally think he'd be worth adding to the talent pool, but this is about Phil and his view of what he wants to do with the roster. I look at it as we have no picks and still have a developmental program going on.

I wouldn't call Wroten a high BB IQ guy. He could be more like DWIll IMO. I do think that at times we need another X Factor type that brings a natural ability to get to the hoop and push the ball. I see nothing wrong with having a reserve who can come off the bench and change the energy of the team like DWill, but at guard. Perhaps Phil feels it's too late in the season to try and work in a kid like Wroten.

I have no idea about Wroten's character. I'm not sure if he's another JR or just a kid that needs some guidance and the right situation. He's just 22. JR had no excuse at his age.

So, IMHO, if Wroten was serious about wanting to be on Knicks, play ball and show up to practices at the Knicks facility with the Westchester Knicks. Dude was guarenteed ~$2M this year, spend the time learning the system and getting a shot and using right hand.

I know there are rumors about how Wroten doesn't want to do a D League stint and 10 day contracts but i've seen nothing definitive that he's only looking for an NBA deal. It could just be Phil hasn't offered to bring him to the W Knicks or maybe Phil is just waiting til the last minute before making any move. Especially since we're getting closer to the Trade Deadline and the Knicks have been playing well.

It seems that just because this thread has gone this long that some think we're saying Wroten is the answer to our starting PG spot. No one is saying that he's gonna walk on the floor and take over the starting spot. The idea is to ADD to the options we have off the bench and provide the missing breakdown ability and scoring at the hoop. He's one of the best in the league at getting to the rim and scoring. He's flawed and young so this isn't about him coming in and taking over. Whenever anyone is supportive of a player the knee jerk response from some is to overstate the opinions of those who want that player.

My reason for wanting Wroten is to add something to the mix that we don't have. Quickness and ability to push the ball and get to the rim effectively. We lack that at guard.

Wroten in 2014-15 played in just 30 games and only started 15 of them and in that time he attacked the rim 245 times and hit at 54.7%. Gallo in 44 games - 79 times at 51.9%. Jerian in 41 games - 77 times at 44.2%.

In todays NBA where you can travel and double dribble when attacking the rim and not get called for it, it doesn't hurt to have a G who can attack. It's an advantage. Philly hasn't exactly had the environment to develop any of it's kids. Now that we have a stable environment, a good mix of vets and kids, and a D-league team to help facilitate development...a kid like Wroten could turn it around given the opportunity. And like has been mentioned, we don't need to rely on him to play unless he earns it.

I don't think Wroten has strengthened his chances by posting 2K pics on social media. Doesn't paint a good picture of a mature kid, but look where he has been. A solid vet core could only help him.

How's that Walt!

Herman's take on what the Knicks may be thinking:

It has been two weeks since teams were able to offer 10-day contracts, and the Knicks have yet to act despite having an open roster spot and small forward Cleanthony Early being out until March with a gunshot wound to his right knee.

According to a person familiar with the club’s thought process, the available players, including point guard Tony Wroten, wouldn’t crack the rotation, so a 10-day contract would be wasteful. If a rotation player sustained a serious injury, then the club would act — possibly on Wroten or Jimmer Fredette — pending the position of need.

If Lance Thomas’ left-knee injury were deemed more serious, the Knicks probably would have signed somebody.

Thomas missed the Knicks’ 118-111 overtime victory over the Jazz on Wednesday, the first time he has missed a game this season. But doctors have determined he has a mild knee sprain. Thomas said he believes he could be back as soon as Friday versus the Clippers.

“It’s a sore knee, mild little sprain,’’ Thomas said. “I”m just going to rest it. It’s nothing that will keep me out. An MRI [exam] wasn’t necessary.’’

Thomas injured the knee when he got kicked Monday in the fourth quarter by Sixers center Nerlens Noel.

The Knicks also are contemplating using a 10-day contract on a young free agent, but that player would then play some games in the D-League with their Westchester affiliate on an experimental basis to learn the triangle while also practicing with the Knicks.

Wroten, cut by the Sixers last month, tweeted the other day a picture of himself in a Knicks uniform, then deleted it. The Knicks have some interest because they consider him a good penetrator, an active defender, strong in the passing lanes, but also are concerned about his tendency to gamble on defense.
