i hope someone was watching tonight's dnc. it was bill clinton's speech that put the icing on hillary's cake....and left no doubt in supporting obama. now we can end the clarification and end this topic

DNC has been off the chain. I am really starting to believe that Oboma will win. I could not take another 4 years of republican rule in this country. THey have done enough damage.

Bonn speaks to win approval of others.

So basically the only reason to vote for McCain is that Obama is half black?

Thats really narrow man, really narrow!
If I wanted that, I would take more popular positions. I write because i enjoy expressing my opinions, especially when it's a unique opinion (one that very few share). Virtually no one agrees with me on most of my comments about the Yankees and I was arguing that Dolan was the big problem and Isiah was just a distraction from the larger problem (Dolan) when everyone else was obsessed with Isiah. (I now have some hope that Walsh will prove me wrong on that second point, though.)

anyone watching hillary speak last night got a glimpse of one great speaker. i was impressed to a degree, but left wanting more clarification for her support to obama for his presidential run. my guesstimation is hillary does not play second fiddle to obama as vp which i was pleased to see joe biden get the selection.

what i did not hear hillary mention that she unequivocally supports obama as president. she needed to convey this message to all clinton supporters, the dnc, and all watching the broadcast. maybe that's why the delegate suzanne malveaux interviewed after hillary's speech was unsure to vote for obama.

Hillary IMHO has never wanted to give in to Barack Obama.

Just look at the clinton's face when they talk about Obama, they do not look sincere at all watch how they put their heads down after praising Obama very telling to me..

Hillary loss a fair fight and it is time for her supporters to rally around the Democratic nominee Barack Obama. All this talk about voting for McCain or sitting out in protest is a bunch of nonsense. Those who do that are not Democrats to begin with.

People should vote for whoever they think is the best candidate, regardless of party. The party system is seriously hurting this country and it's future.

Amen brother. People pick a side and everything their side does is great and everything the other side does is evil and horrible. They defend every criticism of their side and villify the person that made it. Objectivity goes out the window and all on the other side are considered evil and/or dumb. The radio talk shows eat it up and fuel the fire to create more ratings. The politicians play on it to try to get more votes. In the end we are stuck with our pants down. Defending our parties to the hilt and voting for them despite the fact that neither party has used our money and their resources efficiently. We argue over which VP will get the most votes, not which VP will be the best to compliment the presidential candidate in the white house. The two party system has naturally polarized a country in which the majority of the people are moderate in their beliefs.

I am an independent. I am a moderate. I lean liberal and tend to vote democrats, but I want them to earn my vote by actions, not by name. I've never gotten the impression that the rich Republicans give two craps about the general population, but I've also not gotten the impression that the Democrats do either. They just have a better way of making us believe that they do. On both sides of the fence they are a bunch of mega rich power hungry people that have taught us that the corporate rich are bad, while they themselves are "good rich people". Both sides spend our money like it's going out of style and try to invent new ways to get more money from us. All the while our schools and the future of entire groups of people go to the trash heap. It's time to stop voting for a party because "that's what we are supposed to do" and make these people earn our votes by actually improving our communities(both rich and poor)

I have watched this whole thing from a distance and enjoyed doing so. I think and still think that GW is one of the worst presidents ever, certainly of my lifetime. Last election I was pretty heated about beating Bush, even though I was not the biggest Kerry fan.

The Dem's biggest problem is they have not been united and the canditates are barely electable. Gore had potential but was a stiff. Kerry was an elitist who struck me as totally unapproachable.

This seasons duo are super dynamic. Both Hillary and Obama are approachable. They speak a language most can follow. They are both brilliant and can think on their feet. They are both OK with showing some emotion, and reacting to something that they feel strongly about. They ooze charisma. They give brilliant speaches. They both have excellent records that support their views and promises. They dont have ties to big corporations. Etc etc.. you get the idea.

One is a woman

The other a black man

Will America elect on of those? Will swing states go there? Will red states shift to elect a woman or a black man to run the country?

I would love love love to be wrong. I will vote for Obama because he represents the best chance to help me and my demographic. I'm the working middle class guy. 80k-150k, (modest)house in the burbs, 2 kids, drive used cars, kids in public school, I brown bag my lunch many days, dont travel and pretty much live pay check to pay check.

But who else will?

Remember last election? NO WAY we were going to vote for Bush again, and at the very end what was the big deciding factor? Gay marriage. Anyone remember that? Lets see.. the economy is in the ****ter, the dollar is closing on the peso, we are at war in 2 countries and have accomplished nothing in either, Osama at large, AlQueda still strong, suicide bombers run amok, the world is starting hate Americans, the middle east is gouging us for Oil prices and the ****ing Red Sox won a world series... and at the end of the day...

We must elect George to preserve family values, because god bless america and fags shouldnt marry.

I am jaded, I admit. I love this country. I love the persons in this country, but the people are pretty freakin stupid. Will they elect Obama? I dont think they will for the same reason I think Eddy Curry will be fat next October. More things change, more they stay the same.

I have hope.. and I will do my part and cast my vote. I dont hate McCain. I dont even think he would be that bad. Probably not that good though. The Dems have a good guy. A guy I think posseses the charisma to make things happen and change the perception of this country around the world. I hope we elect him. Time will tell. I dont trust the dems to run a good campain. Last year they totally failed to remind people just how bad things were. Hopefully they dont make the same mistake.

Fishmike, I agree that we ran a putrid campaign when Kerry was running, but I don't even think at this point, that other democrats even need to mention how poorly run our country has been for a couple reasons. 1) Even republicans are swaying away from Bush and 2) Obama and Biden mention all the time, how poorly run the country is. While Kerry is passive, I think Obama/Biden are going to be extremely aggresive and shove their campaigns right through the chest of John McCain. Should be interesting.

With that said, I pray for the safety of Obama.

Allanfan and Fish: As much as it pains me to say this, I agree with both of you.

I'm not sold on Obama because of his lack of experience and some of his extreme to the left views. But I'm pretty ready for a different approach. He's a smart man and at least has a grip on reality. I'm not a McCain fan and think he's similar to Bush and fear his age. At 74 he will be seeking re-election, can't see that happening. But I do think he's more savvy than George.

But I agree with Fish. We are losing so much credibility in the world. It's time for a different approach. Let's just hope that if we get a different approach, it's a good one and not just change for change sake. I personally like Obama for extremely selfish reasons. The effect of a black president on the black community would be invaluable. We will be able to inspire millions of kids that had closed their ears to the proper message years ago. That alone could add so much to our country and too our economy and the conditions for everyone. I just pray he is as good as he sounds.

Fish,

Don't just vote for hour demographic, cuz thats what everyone does. What can So in So do for me?

It SHOULD be about the collective good of the country, and the world.

It seems like Im acceptable for many of the worlds ills but im a realist in that I understand all governements and societies have disinfranchised population. While we would like to have a president that brings it home, its also important that we maintain an ecnomomy and tax structure that does not hurt the rich, as they are the ones whom own most small companies, and provide most of the jobs in this countries. Sure we want to trim the fat cats, but the money invested in companies (public and private) are the very ones that provide most of the jobs.

I agree with just about everyone here. Racism is a player in this election and will matter. The economy matters, oil matters, the war matters.

If we pull our troops the problems still exist here and abroad. Pointing fingers won't help going forward. For better or worse the problems at hand are the very facts we have to deal with going forward. The moron will be gone, but the problems exist. It may not even be the morons fault, or his party! Just is the system.

I like Obama, I like the hope he can offer, but is it enough?

allanfan thats the democratic problem right there. They assume people see the obvious. There are a ton of people that think GW did a good job. There are even more people that think he did his best but was dealt a tough hand to play. Dem need to ram down the throat that no.. Bush sucked because his policies were terrible and the country paid. That McCain favored and voted for like 90 something % of Bush's policies.

Dems assumed people saw the obvious... kind of like I assumed holfresh and nixluva could see Isiah was a crappy GM. Its not always obvious. Thats why you have to hammer it home.. Isiah was bad, we needed Anthony Randolph and Bush sucks.

I do have a little lump in my throut at the thought of Obama being elected. While his election would catapult us into a new era of change and what I would think as a very exciting time if something were to happen to him the fallout would be catastrophic IMO.

They killed JFK. The most charismatic American in the TV era IMO. The Irish Catholic gunlinger that didnt back down from Russia or anyone else. Think of his impact on the civil rights movements... anyway, thats a discussion for another day.

Watching Dennis Kucinich made me remember why I'm a Democrat. He shows passion and loyalty to the Democratic people and the citizens of the United States a great Patriot. He's not afraid to speak the truth and doesn't rely on "opinion polls" before deciding which side to be on issue. I hope that Obama will utilize Kucinich and his progressive messages. To often the Democrat party tries to stay slightly left of center on issues and the progressive base is ignored in General elections.

Kucinich is a little to far to the left for me, but I agree with you 100%. The guy sticks to what he believes in regardless of what the polls say. That's what we need. The pandering kills us. When you know where a candidate stands you can make an informed decision. For me guys like McCain and Kerry I never know what to believe. It would be so good for the country to have multiple parties. Where guys like Kucinich could run on their own merits. Instead of having to constantly pander to groups to make sure they get elected.

I agree 100% with all of that. The Dems think that if they just compromise on their values and move to the center, people will vote for them, but what they really need to do is argue for their values much better. They also run away from moral issues too often rather than trying to argue for their viewpoints.

Its all good when the conventions are taking place. Great speaches, great ideals, and great promises of a better tomorrow.

Y'all sound like most after a few days of drinking the cool aid.

In a perfect world, we all go to the left and be happy. But it don't work that way.

Im down for all the wonderfulness that our country does have, and could be!

But these Kucinich has the passion, but where are the results of all those before that also had it? Wasn't clinton suppose to be the fresh new kid who was gonna bring us to the dawn of a new age? And he did well mind you, but it also let to the W. Age and to some degree we let our heavy foriegn policy guard down. We balanced the budge, but now spending again.

I think it all depends on whether you believe there or are evil doers in the world out to get us.

Sure, I'll vote for Obama but its him going into the same meat grinder the rest of them went into. Deals have to get done, compromised must be made, and in the end we perhaps move closer to the light and evolve into a better world.

Thats how it works. I see progress, but never at the pace we'd like.

Our country is still the best game in town! The process works.

Until Playa enters the room.

Bippity,

First off you stated one major inaccuracy in your post. And I think this goes to the heart of the matter why you are off base in some of your assumptions.

The United States is not ranked the highest in the Standard of living and I'll do you one better the UN's Human Development Index which measures a country's literacy knowledge education, life expectancy, and standard of living ranked the United States as number 13 hell we aren't even number one on our continent because Canada is.

So lets take a further look at our economy: one percent of the richest households in America control 38% of the wealth and the top 20 percent control 80%. Our distribution of wealth is the WORST among developed nations. An even more disturbing trend the things that the middle class rely on for wealth CDs, homeownership, savings accounts, money markets; 85% of all outstanding stocks and financial securities are controlled by the 10% richest families, as well as 90% of business assets. So I challenge you to find a reputable economist (I am not proclaiming to be one) that would say this model will promote positive economic growth and stability for a nation.

You also stated that your French, British, and Middle Eastern business associates complain that they live in a financial system that allows no growth from one class to the next. I think this a generic statement not really based on anything of substance other then a couple of guys talking. Thats not to say you or they are off base but I seriously doubt that their systems are that regimented. Hell the richest women in GB right now who I believe is worth more then the Queen of England J.K. Rowling started writing the Harry Potter series while she was on Welfare. This is just a random sample off the top of my head. The Middle East why you would group them together considering that the Middle East includes a vast number of countries with very diverse societies I don't know. But I also admit that I am not well versed of the intricacies of the French, British, and all the Middle Eastern countries economic systems.

You will get agreement with me on improving our educational system but again this deals with regulation. Various lending companies have been allowed to completely gouge college students on loans. The average college tuition at a private school is around 32,000 so please tell me how an average kid is going to come up with 128,000? Winning the lottery, becoming a big budget action star, signing a multi-million dollar pro sports contract? Now add that the student loan debt, to inflation that exists almost everywhere in this society (except of course our salaries)? Yet we wonder why so many kids opt to not goto college and this hurts the middle class the most. At least if you are poor it's easier to obtain financial aid but if you have both parents in the household and they make 50 grand a piece you can kiss most of financial aid good-bye.

Finally this country' stability is based on checks and balances. Thats why we have a Supreme Court, Congress, Senate, and President. Everyone (at least in theory) in this society has to answer for their actions. Thats what separates us from anarchy or on the opposite spectrum dictatorships. So when you complain that business men such as yourself are suffering under the oppressive rules of the American government remember that these checks and balances protect you and your family as well. Guess what the middle class that includes you to. Unless of course your net income falls in the bracket of top 10% (which I'm assuming it doesn't but I could be wrong). Stop believing the Reaganomics myth. That businesses and a country's economic growth will suffer tremendously if there is too much government oversight. You would be very hard pressed to find any actual facts or models to back-up this claim. But if you can I'm absolutely open to hearing it. I know we've all heard this saying before but your only as strong as your weakest link. Most countries in the world you can find filthy rich people but what truly separates the bad from, the good, to the best is their middle class and poor. What kind of opportunities if any they have to seek a better life. Because right now that rubber band is being stretched, stretched, and stretched until it snaps and the economy totally collapses. And would you feel it was worth it because you got to save a few extra tax dollars?

Bitty you raise some great points, many of which I agree with. But let me ask you this question. You brought up our educational system. Can you research and examine what has happened to our educational system since the Board of Education has come into affect. The government fixes nothing. You and I will agree to disagree on this topic. When the government gets involved it decreases competition and innovation. It leads to indirect consequences that are not obvious to see but happen nonetheless. I'm just stating reality. We can raise the taxes on business to suit the masses. And on paper it looks great. But the bottomline is people go into business to make money. When you eat into their profits they will cut costs. It's human nature.

Absolutely AWESOME post by Bitty!! WOW!!!!

Bippity - Here is my counter to your argument: The premise that large government stifles innovation and competition is a bad one. Government is perfectly capable of being efficient. I think the root of the problem is the approach the govt has taken in the US of A. Who gets hired to government? Do the best and the brightest take govt jobs? Do you think any one in even the top 25% of college students would work for our govt? Didnt think so either. It has always been the policy of our govt to hire second and third tier people into government jobs. When you load you organization with such people do you really expect innovation and competition? None of these people are bad employees but the overall culture become oppressive, stifling and resistant to change. Those high flying ambitious people needed to create and share a vision and to mobilize the masses are not there in Govt agencies, that is why they fail. So large govt is not bad govt. Its who you hire into it.

Your argument about people going onto business to make money is spot on. So they will shed jobs if taxes are raised? What if taxes are not raised that money goes staright into their greedy pockets, right? Business dont hire people as a social service they hire less people than they need and force everyone to work extra. So I dont completely buy the notion that they can shed more people and continue to operate at the same level.

But this economy did not crash becuase of taxes it crashed IN SPITE of tax breaks, that much is history. We live in an economy financed primarily through debt. Regardless of how you look a it, the republicans took the approach that we would borrow our way out of debt. The last I checked that shyit dont fly. At some point in the future this nation will have to realize that status quo is not working and we actually have an obligation to repay our debt. The only way any government can hope to pay off anything is by increasing taxes, interest rates etc. There is no way around it, we have all seen what the fancy footwork by accountants who juggle numbers at will can do (Read ENRON) and we have also seen that you cannot finaance your entire economy based on debt alone. So yes raising taxes is a MUST.

i am no expert on politics. i try to look at things in a philosophic manner...

i think america wants change...but is obama qualified enough to bring that change? i don't know. i don't think anybody can know. is the american voter ready to put the country in the hands of a guy with only 8 years of experience in washington, especially during such a critical time in this country's history? and for a non-caucasian nonetheless?

it's a gamble...at least for me, it's not an easy decision to make.

i voted for gore in 2000 b/c i liked the way he talked about the future, not just the next 4 or 8 years, but setting up a future well past his term(s) in office (i.e health care, social security, and of course the environment). but after the debacle of that election, i chose not to vote in 2004. my own little political boycott.

ultimately tho, my vote doesn't matter b/c ny will vote democrat. but i have absolutely no idea what the rest of the country will do...
If obama doesnt take hillary as his running mate he will get blown out
