Just a thought. I don't get why Tim Thomas and Antonio Davis have been traded because their salaries match exactly and they are both expiring contracts. Also, the Bulls don't need Thomas and we did not really need Davis. I think this trade would have been a little better if both were not included: just a Sweetney, J.Jackosn and a pick for Curry trade. Our roster would have been more balanced.
But anyway, I like this deal a lot, it is just a thought.

back-track a few pages and look for the math explanation. I asked the same question.

ITs weird, if Curry can't play, we might not do so well, and the Bulls get compensated with a better pick.

Lets put it this way, if we should falter for what ever reason, we best just let the rooks play and tank it so we don't lose a good pick.

I am hopefull we are a 10 to 15 team and in the playoffs.

Most important is our future upside his huge!

I woke up this morning happy about my team like I haven't been in awhile!

Today is all positivity, and I just enforced it by ripping up Peter Vescey's column! I printed it out and read it on the way to work. AFter reading the silly snoty comments, I happily tore it up and tossed it, not willing to participate in the negativity because NOTHING is bringing me down today!

KNICKS!!!
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

we are giving up 3 draft choices (one 1st rounder in 2006 protected 25-30, two second rounders).

You are so right. Nothing will bring me down today. I am looking forward to a real good season. And you know what has me really really excited? We will have a real center for the first time since Ewing! We can look FORWARD now. Eddy Curry is a legitimate thread in the paint on Offense. We can actually add pieces to this team now. I really like what Isiah did this off-season.

I wonder what Nate will look like standing next to Eddy Curry.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Risk management
By Steve Kerr, Yahoo! Sports
October 3, 2005

Steve Kerr
Yahoo! Sports Exclusive
The Chicago Bulls' proposed trade of Eddy Curry to the New York Knicks on Monday was a move that general manager John Paxson didn't want to make, but ultimately had to make.

With Curry facing a potentially life threatening heart condition, Paxson made every effort to resolve the medical issues at hand. But when Curry refused to take a DNA test that apparently would have given Paxson and the Bulls the answers they needed, they were forced to deal their starting center to New York.

The Knicks, for their part, are apparently convinced Curry will be fine. The sign-and-trade deal will give the young center an estimated $60 million to $70 million over six years. If Curry does indeed stay healthy, he could be the young player New York so desperately needs. He has the potential to be one of the league's best low-post players – a center who can change the game entirely by forcing double teams and dominating the lane.

The troubling aspect of this deal, of course, is that both the Knicks and Curry appear willing to neglect the DNA test to get what they want. New York gets a starting center, while Curry receives a huge contract. With the tragic memories of Reggie Lewis and Hank Gathers still vivid for so many of us, it's scary to think of Curry taking the floor if he is indeed at risk of a heart attack. It should be in everyone's best interests – especially Curry's – to take the test.

The Bulls, for their part, offered Curry $400,000 a year for 50 years if he failed the test – basically insuring him financial security in a worst-case scenario. But Curry refused and forced Paxson's hand, getting the big contract he wanted and landing a spot in the Knicks' lineup.

Had Curry taken the test and passed it, Paxson would have signed him to a long-term deal and the Bulls would have been a potential upper-echelon NBA team for years to come. But a frustrated Paxson did the right thing, refusing to be responsible for Curry's health without complete medical testing and assurances that the heart problem was not life threatening.

Paxson also had to answer to his owners, who weren't about to commit so much money to Curry without assurances of their own. The Knicks, who have never been shy about spending money, are apparently willing to take that chance.

In return for Curry, the Bulls will receive Tim Thomas, Mike Sweetney, Jermaine Jackson and draft picks. Rumors are that Antonio Davis, who is part of the package to New York, will be subsequently released and re-signed by Chicago to a minimum deal. The Bulls will have major salary-cap space next summer as a result of the trade. Of course, they'd rather have a healthy Curry, but at the end of a frustrating process, dealing Curry was about all Paxson could do.

Hopefully, Curry and the Knicks know what they're doing, and the big man will have a great career – and more importantly – live a long, productive life. But it seems awfully dangerous to gamble on that without taking every precautionary measure.

Yo Silver, If they start selling Curry Fryes in the Garden, you deserve some royalties!!

Actually, it's not a half-bad idea. Sounds like that would go perfectly with my beer and Prime Rib sammich!!

I was LMAO at Knicks hater all night, they are clamoring about Curry's heart issue and I brushed that off my shoulder like the dirt that it is. A friend of mine who's a Nets fan tried to play it off, but he couldn't hide the fear in his voice. LOL!!!

Yeah man It's a proud day to be a Knicks fan.....i mean damn look at the roster from last year and this year? WTF!!!!

Isiah is a genius. Regardless of what happens to Curry. The Knicks still have a stacked roster. If Curry can't play we got Jerome James and Frye still.
And Sweetney? Who cares what he does?...Knicks still have Rose and Taylor....not to mention Lee and Butler. What!!!! WhaT!!! What!!! What!!!!!

Isiah signed Jermaine Jackson and sent him with the deal? Isiah is a Hustler!!!!!!!

thats a great article from Kerr, and I echo his last sentiments

overall I have no idea at all what to think of this trade.

I loved Sweets and thought he was poised for a breakout year under Larry B. That being said this deal could be a coup. If Curry is healthy this deal is a steal. Sweetney is a nice player but Curry is a 22 year old beast in the making. Easily one of the leagues promising young bigmen. If we made this trade at last year's all star break it would have cost us Sweetney, Ariza and at least 2-3 #1's with no protection (and Briggs still would have laughed... "yea, we are getting Curry")

I just dont know how to calculate or deal with the risk. The fact is the Bulls were so convinced that this test was important they were willing to give him $20mm or 400k/year for 50 years if he FAILED. Doesnt this strike anyone as scary?

Look, I should be thrilled at the prospect of Eddie Curry the player. Rebounding can be taught. JVG turned Camby into one of the league's better bigs on the boards. Go look at the #'s, they dont lie. I have no doubt that these years under LB could and would produce the star that was Curry's promise when he was taken #4 overall. Star centers dont grow on trees. This guy's value goes beyond dollars. When you pair this kind of talent with LB your mixing a potent potion for years to come. Someone that can anchor your franchise for a decade.

So I should be excited, but I'm not. This heart thing bothers me. I just feel like there is a dark cloud hanging over this deal and this team now. I wont even go into the "what if" this guy dies scenarios, but he walked away from an easy lifestyle. $400k for 50 years just to take a test that will prove he's OK or he's at risk ti himself. Does that freak anyone else out? Even if he knew the results were OK and he was just doing this for the money from the Knicks it still doesnt make sense because Chi was going to offer him close to max cash.

I wonder what kind of condition he's in and how he deals with LB's "boot camp"

I think 400K for 50 years was part PR by the Bulls. For real.

hey man, i was right there with you on sweetney. i pretty much lambasted any proposal moving sweets in this deal for curry. BUT then i realized that the knicks would not be taking back this type of risk for this type of money without knowing his health situation - i mean they're not THAT stupid, are they? i think ultimately, a guy like curry, who's heavily influenced by people around him, made the choice to come to ny. i'm sure jamal and isiah were in his and his agents ear throughout the whole process and he made up his mind. it's not to difficult to see a 22 year old immature kid get stubborn. heck, we just saw it with joe johnson.

so at the end of the day, i can't see how the knicks throw $55+ mil at a guy that may never play again. i hate losing sweets but what you said about curry is right on - this guy could anchor the team for a decade at a position that can lead to championships. and you combine that with LB and now the word "championship" doesn't seem too far fetched.

i think it was a very good trade and i'm glad it was done...even if i own a sweetney jersey.

maybe, Its hard to give the Bulls the benefit of the doubt. They havent exactly been the best run franchise in recent years. That being said its not exactly a rumor either. Pax came straight out and said it. I hope everyone around here is right. Trust me... nobody wants it to be true (and Curry healthy) more thant myself. The roster still needs work but that will happen. The pieces we might need to get now are the easy ones.
