I don't think will suffice for all question but may give you a bit more insight. Thread is a very good explainer.

Thanks! Still think it's a very dodgy decision, I'm pretty much with this guy- lack of negative test is the issue I have, seems like the data used is mainly based on the previous variant not Omicron.

I don't know what that guy is talking about but here are the recommendations:

https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2021/s1227-isolation-quarantine-guidance.html

Given what we currently know about COVID-19 and the Omicron variant, CDC is shortening the recommended time for isolation from 10 days for people with COVID-19 to 5 days, if asymptomatic, followed by 5 days of wearing a mask when around others. The change is motivated by science demonstrating that the majority of SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurs early in the course of illness, generally in the 1-2 days prior to onset of symptoms and the 2-3 days after. Therefore, people who test positive should isolate for 5 days and, if asymptomatic at that time, they may leave isolation if they can continue to mask for 5 days to minimize the risk of infecting others.

There definitely has been a poor communication of what the 5 day iso really means and what the conditions of the 5 day iso is for vaxx'ed vs unvaxx'ed vs vaxx/boosted and the timing of when you actually get vaxxed/boosted. And not for nothing but J&J sucks.

My rule number 1 is to never blindly follow Fauci and the CDC. I will never forget at the beginning of the pandemic Fauci really came on TV and said masks don't effectively stop the spread of Covid. I knew right away that was BS. So from that day I always said I will hear what they have to say but also filter it through common sense.

Fauci had to say that because there wasn't enough masks available for the doctors and nurses in hospitals at the time.

Like I said I will hear what Fauci and the CDC has to say but filter it with common sense. Common sense in this situation says that omicron replicates more in the nose than Delta. This is why it is more transmissible. Why would we choose now to shorten isolation time for a variant that replicates more in the nose. It just does not make logical sense to me.

While the number is very high it's not as bad due to a lot more people being vaxxed now.

I live in Florida and personally don't know anyone who's died of covid. None of my friends even have friends who've lost a loved one to covid.

My mom is 72 years old. Beat covid. Told me there was no difference for her than the regular flu.

Covid is real. But I don't fear it.

Interesting that apparently it's still getting bad in NY even though its a place with like 90% vaxx rate I believe. I wonder what's the percentage of people in the hospital that are vaxxed vs unvaxxed. We probably have a big enough population where even if it was only unvaxxed going to hospital it would still probably overwhelm it. I still would like those numbers to see how well the vaxxs are doing vs this variant.

Everyone I know is getting covid right now. So far in the past 2 weeks or so over 10 people I know have gotten it. They think they are playing it safe since it worked for them with the other variants but omicron is so easily spreadable that they all are still catching it. Luckily they are all vaxxed so for them they were sick for like 4 or 5 days then started to feel better. Weirdly the only person I know who is anti vaxx is my father. He is still anti vaxx after knowing covid killed my mother. It just seems once people get it in their mind they will not change unless the virus comes close to killing them.

Same here! Fortunately all have been vaxxed and had relatively mild symptoms- tested positive for about 7-10 days. Not sure how long I can avoid getting it myself! Trying to hold out until I've had my hospital appointment for an op consultation (managed to make it to the date just after Christmas but then the appointment got cancelled on the day because the surgeon got covid!).

I will never understand this scenario. And then you put on top YOUR situation and I know you've mentioned immunocompromised for yourself and the precautions you have taken.

I cannot for the life of me wrap my head around your father's perspective, especially considering you and your mom. Blows my mind away

I read some articles never the start of the pandemic, about anti Vaxxer’s, particularly the possible mindset of some, and for some it seems it’s an anxiety thing- by thinking its a scam and the vaccines are bad, they feel less of a threat from covid that’s out of their control, plus they feel smarter and more powerful because they think they, unlike most normal people, can see ‘the truth’. This helps them feel safer.

Then it can become a bit of a talisman, so the more the threat they feel from covid, the more they double down on the talisman- can be a bit like religion in that regard. Not sure how many people it applies to, but it was an interesting way of trying to interpret it.

For others, especially people of a certain generation, they have a mindset of ‘everything’s a big fuss about nothing’

I remember some training I did years ago, where we watched a video about a man who had a stroke and it had killed the part of his brain that processes emotion. As a result he couldn’t feel/experience emotion- one of the unexpected outcomes of this was he could seem to make any decisions, just seemed to get paralyzed with indecision. One explanation was that rather than being rational beings, we actually just use emotion to filter through conflicting information, so essentially we don’t weight up two competing arguments, we just gravitate to the one that emotionally resonates with us, then justify it with ‘reason’ retrospectively. Not sure if that’s true or not, but it’s always intrigued me and helps explain the times we live in.
